The Gusties compiled yet another memorable season winning the Overall Record: 22-6 MIAC regular season (18-2) and Playoff Championship titles. The MIAC Record: 18-2 regular season league title was the first in seven years. The Gusties, who finished with a record of 22-6, Concordia W, 76-56 Macalester W, 73-72 posted their fourth straight 20-win season and ninth in the St. Olaf W, 86-48 St. Thomas L, 56-61 past ten years. The Gustavus men’s basketball program is celebrating its 100th season this year. To commemorate this special occasion, there will be an insert in each game program highlighting one of the 16 MIAC Championship teams as well as the outstanding individuals and coaches that have helped make the Gustavus men’s basketball program one of the most successful programs in the history of Division III basketball. A Look Back At the 2002-03 NCAA Tournament Run After David Newell made a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds left to give the Gusties a 65-64 win over Bethel in the MIAC Semifinals, Gustavus went on one of the most memorable playoff runs in school and conference history. The Gusties defeated Whitworth (65-55), UW-Stevens Point (75-62), Hanover (79-66), and Occidental (74-56) to earn the program’s first trip to the Final Four in Salem, Virginia. In the semifinals, Gustavus defeated Hampden-Sydney 79-68 in front of over 4,700, 300 of which were Gustie fans who began to chant “This is our house”. Williams edged Gustavus 67-65 in the national championship game as the Ephs made a pair of free throws with 2.6 seconds remaining to secure the win. The 2002-03 Gusties are the only team from the MIAC that has ever advanced to the championship game.
