To a great extent I owe the discovery of my topic to Lee Smith whose books inspired my interest. Lee has given me an extraordinary amount of her time, has encouraged me with letters, and has paid me the honor that she first found herself in her teachers and peers at Hollins: the compliment of taking my work seriously. The words of Katie Cocker in The Devil’s Dream seem to be Smith's own attitude about treating people: “No matter how big 1 get, I will always remember this moment. I will always try to be nice to the kids coming up in this business and treat them decent, not like Dawn Chapel did me. It's a great feeling to help another artist who's really struggling as a newcomer. And I know what it means to a new artist for someone else to just speak up for them a little bit” (271). My interview with Smith led me to Hollins where I discovered firsthand the generosity of the faculty. Though I was a stranger without an appointment, John Allen took me into his office and sketched a brief history of the time period in which I was interested. He sent me to Fishbum Library where I met head librarian Richard Kirkwood who quickly introduced me to the current archivist, Anna Kirkwood. To her I owe a great debt. She would patiently climb up and down the two stories to the archive storage to retrieve for me any information, no matter how small. She suggested sources that I couldn't have discovered on my own; she enlisted the help of other administrators on campus. Thanks also to Beth St. Cyr for helping me to re-check sources in the archives. Richard H. W. Dillard took time from his sabbatical to come to campus and answer questions about his former students and colleagues. It was he who first told me about Beanstalks: and, when I discovered that Fishbum Library had no copy of the magazine, he dug into his own records and sent me a photocopy for my use. My research soon brought me again to Chapel Hill to Algonquin Books where I met Louis D. Rubin, Jr. He was completely free with his time and open to all of my questions. He introduced me to Shannon Ravenel, the new editor at Algonquin and a Hollins graduate who has, herself, made important contributions to the growth and encouragement of new Southern writers. Even the secretary was interested and encouraging, pressing Killer Diller and Ferris Beach upon the impoverished graduate student as a show of support. Kind and helpful, too, were Bob Anthony, Alice Cotter, and Jeff Dix, the librarians in the North Carolina Collection in Wilson Library of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. I have been particularly touched at how generous have been the Hollins graduates whom I have interviewed. Few people could have greater demands on their time. Annie Dillard, fresh back from a polar expedition and having just completed another book, not only answered my questions but helpfully criticized some of my strategy. The first part of my work outlines possible theoretical approaches to tomboyism from the perspective of gender (androgyny, feminist criticism, female masculinity, masquerade and gender performance), discusses the issue of the tomboy’s liminal position between childhood and adulthood as well as between masculinity and femininity and introduces the method of intersectional analysis which, combined with queer theory addressing identity categories as fluid, allows me to analyze questions of race, class and sexuality arising from the specific regional setting of McCullers’s work.

    This page intentionally left blank Slavery in White and Black Class and Race in the Southern Slaveholders’ New World Order Southern slaveholders proudly pronounced themselves orthodox Chris- tians, who accepted responsibility for the welfare of the people who worked for them. They proclaimed that their slaves enjoyed a better and more secure life than any laboring class in the world. Now, did it not follow that the lives of laborers of all races across the world would be immea- surably improved by their enslavement? In the Old South, but in no other slave society, a doctrine emerged among leading clergymen, politicians, and intellectuals, “Slavery in the Abstract,” which declared enslavement the best possible condition for all labor regardless of race. They joined the socialists, whom they studied, in believing that the free-labor system, wracked by worsening class warfare, was collapsing. A vital question: To what extent did the people of the several social classes of the South accept so extreme a doctrine? That question lies at the heart of this book. Elizabeth Fox-Genovese (1941–2007) was Eleonore Raoul Professor of the Humanities at Emory University, where she was founding director of Women’s Studies. She served on the Governing Council of the National Endowment for the Humanities (2002–2007). In 2003, President George W. Bush awarded her a National Humanities Medal; the Georgia State Senate honored her with a special resolution of appreciation for her contri- butions as a scholar, teacher, and citizen of Georgia; and the fellowship of Catholic Scholars bestowed on her its Cardinal Wright Award.

    British canvas, stretcher and panel suppliers’ marks. Part 12, England outside London This guide surveys suppliers’ marks and labels on the reverse of picture supports. This part is devoted to suppliers in England excluding London. Marks relating to framing, restoration and picture dealing are not treated here. Part 14, devoted to restorers, includes the canvas stamps of R.W. King (Yarmouth and Norwich) and J.R. Taylor (Manchester). Several of the suppliers bought in materials from larger companies and applied their own label or stamp, often quite small. Examples include Keet (on a Roberson support), Mason (Ackermann & Co and Roberson & Miller), Lanham, Norton and Whitehead (Winsor & Newton), Tovey and Whitehead (G. Rowney & Co). Measurements of marks, given where known, are approximate and may vary according to the stretching or later conservation treatment of a canvas or the trimming of a label. Links are given to institutional websites where the dimensions of works can be found. For individual suppliers, see the database, British artists' suppliers, 1650-1950. Square brackets are used to indicate indistinct or missing lettering in transcripts, with readings sometimes based on other examples. It begins somewhere in the postbellum Southern United States where a group of Southern writers and theorists saw an inevitable change on the horizon and made the conscious decision to define themselves in the struggle against it. That inevitability was the spread and eventual globalization of industrial capitalism which had begun to creep into the American South bringing with it the threat of a complete transformation of the politics, the economy, and the identity of the region. Those who sought to slow or stop the invasion were engaged in a futile battle. The “Lost Cause” of the Confederacy had become the Lost Cause of the Old South – an idealized myth of the American South of generations past. It was a concept created through nostalgia, the very proclamation of which was the first 1 2 significant evidence of its passing.
