E S S O R E S O U R C E S A N N U I T A N T C L U B November 2015 Publisher - Susan Sawka Editor—Diane Cook Happy Holidays!

It’s that time of year again! A magical time when snow falls and blankets the city making it look like a winter wonderland. When people decorate the inside and out- side of their homes with lights, baubles, and bows. When people bake lots of nummy cookies. And when people get together to share good food and spirits and enjoy each other's company.

The Board of Directors, and the newsletter team — Susan Sawka (Publisher) and Diane Cook (Editor) wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Nadine and I participated in our first Lawn Bowling event over the summer and had a wonderful time. I was asked to participate again next year on the condition that I bowl on the other team! The summer is now behind us and activity groups such as Hiking, Golf, Lawn Bowling, and Garden- ing have all wound up. It won’t be long before we will be into the detail preparations for our 2016 AGM. Next year's AGM & Spring Luncheon will be held at the Glenmore Inn once again due to our increasing membership.

Our next ERAC event is the Autumn Evening at Fort Calgary on November 17th. This is a new event and maximum attendance is 150. We expect the demand to be high so register early. I hope to see many of you at this event!

Some of our membership has already flown the coup to warmer climates and others are preparing to leave. Those staying to brave the winter, and that includes me (for part of it anyway), will have lots of club activities to keep us busy. Although I'm not a traditional winter sport enthusiast, I plan to at- tend some of these events over the winter months.

Nadine and I would like to wish you and those around you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. Howard

Our Community Care initiative continues to grow! Nine new people joined our volunteer activities over the summer. Welcome John, Laura, Leanne, Maureen, Nancy, Rita, Russ, Satish, and Sue.

At our annual social on September 18 (left photo), we celebrated our achievements and dis- cussed how we can improve. Jim Langbein, President of the BP Alumni Volunteers outlined how the BP group is managed, how they interface with BP, the activities they support and examples where our volunteers could work with the BP Alumni. His presentation and the ensuing discussion gener- ated many ideas, some of which have already been implemented.

Eleven people volunteered at the Pearce Estate Wetland on September 30 (right photo). This new activity was well received. Dave P. will coordinate regular visits next year.

With an ever growing number of volunteers, we are exploring providing afternoon teas at senior resi- dences; additional activities at the Drop In Centre; sorting donated eyeglasses; GlobalFest; and Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids. We need activity coordinators to implement these activities. Let me know if you would like to help.

Thanks to those who donated the 11 backpacks for the Drop In Centre. Let Jennie or Peter know if you have a neglected backpack that could be put to good use.

On September 30th, we had our last event, our wind up golf event at Darcy Ranch with 35 people at- tending. It was an excellent day for golfing -- sunny and 22 degrees. Curling season is upon us at the North Hill Curling Club on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm each week.

On October 6th, an instructional session was held for new curlers prior to our first game and satisfac- tory comments were received from the participants. Both the sliding delivery and the stick delivery were instructed.

The league has managed to reach our goal of 12 teams and six sheets of ice. However, we are still seeking new Esso annuitant members and non-members who would like to play occasionally as spares.

We are always looking for new curlers. So please contact us as there is always the possibility that we can fit you in as a regular or a spare.

BOWLING CLUB NEWS Peter Perry - (403) 270-0704 [email protected]

Our bowling season got off to a great start with almost 14 teams. But “almost” doesn't quite make it. We do need at least two more regular and spare bowlers to support our league. This is an excellent opportunity for you to join our relaxed Bowling Club that will provide you with recreational fun, fit- ness, and social benefits.

Don’t be concerned about not making it every Monday due to a vacation or the odd coincidental ap- pointment time, we do have spares to fill in. We also welcome closely associated friends too.

Please contact Peter Perry who will answer questions and provide details for you. Never bowled be- fore? We’ll help in that regard too. We already have several new members join us this year who’ve not bowled before!

Why not join in? Please do give us a call today! Then, if bowling’s not for you, well, you’ll be happy it was given a fair try, no worries! ERAC November 2015 Page 12 Newsletter CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING & SNOWSHOEING CLUB Dave Varga [email protected]

Today, as I write this, it's “Coincidence Day”: our first Met Live Opera in HD, Verdi’s Otello, and the due date for newsletter submissions.

We had a wonderful outing. Verdi has arguably put out a better dramatization of the story of Otello than Shakespeare did originally. In comparison, Verdi’s Iago is totally evil and Verdi cut him no slack. It was never as clear whenever I have seen the more traditional Shakespeare presentations. Also, it's a great story on nearly the eve of an election—a story of misrepresentation, false promises, jumping to conclusions, and a decided lack of deep thinking.

On a side note of relevance to our group—Verdi actually was talked out of retirement to create the opera—so we even had that to resonate with our group of annuitants for this performance.

I look forward to April 2, when a more melodic presentation will satisfy the appetites of our group with Madama Butterfly by Puccini.

The nature of our group is that I buy all the tickets for us when they first go on sale, and I wish to thank all of our group who have gambled that they will be available on the two dates given and who gave me their money several months in advance of the performances.

That being said, plans and situations do change and sometimes people can’t make the show. I would like people to get in touch with me if they were hesitant about their schedule and didn’t sign up with me last June. Within the week before our outing (next on April 2), I would like to be able to contact possible alternates if we do have any available seats due to unforeseen changes in circum- stance. So please let me know by phone or with an email if you might be interested in trying the Met Live in HD performance and I will contact you if a seat or two becomes available during the last few days before the performance. Tickets for the Met Opera Live in HD at this time run $27 per seat for seniors, so the $20 I will ask from you (to reimburse the original unfortunate soul who has to miss the performance) is a real bargain.

So mark your calendars on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 10:00 am for Madama Butterfly. We are in for a real treat. See you at Chinook Scotiabank theatre on that date and I will hand out your tickets.

Don’t forget my email has changed to [email protected]

Our first meeting was held on September 15 to select topics for the year as well as discuss a num- ber of Club improvement ideas.

On September 22, 44 people toured Trans Alta’s windmill farm facility located in the Pincher Creek area and enjoyed a beautiful drive in southern Alberta. The tour included a technical presentation on wind power, the control room for 15 wind farms across Canada, and an inside look at one of newest operating windmills. The tour ended with supper and refreshments in Longview.

On October 21, we toured the Fairview Hutterite Colony.

A number of exciting tours, topics and places for social gatherings are being investigated for the up- coming months. The potential list includes Walmart’s state-of-the-art distribution facilities located at Cross Iron Mills; the Encana building; Quarry Park; the Rothyrey Astrophysical Observatory located near Priddis; a window manufacturing plant, estate financial planning, a robotics lab, and a computer topic such as use of Windows 10.

Even though it’s only November, our Photography Club year is rapidly coming to an end. Our next meeting is on November 11th and we’re going to prepare for taking photos that illustrate the holiday season. The photos could be included in seasonal emails and we’ll be looking at everyones’ best shots at our first meeting of 2016 on January 13th. At the January meeting, we’ll have an introduc- tion to using Photoshop Elements to correct and improve our photos.

Meetings during the winter season are held on the second Wednesday of the month at the Lakeview Community Center Fieldhouse at 1:00 pm. For more details visit the ERAC Web site. ERAC November 2015 Page 15 Newsletter WINE APPRECIATION CLUB Dwain Weckman—(403) 239-2394 [email protected]

The 2015 - 2016 Wine Appreciation season started on October 6th with the theme “How to Rate Wines”, which was presented by our Cellar Master, Al Davis. He provided a number of easy-to- remember guidelines for rating wines, and we were able to try using them as we sampled the six dif- ferent wines. There were 74 people in attendance at the event. The Club welcomed five new mem- bers that evening: Jussi and Hilary Alto, Ron and Sherry Kitt, and Jill Tupper.

The dates and themes for the 2015 - 2016 season are as follows:

The theme of the December 1st tasting event will be “Christmas Cheer” and promises to be a fun so- cial event featuring a selection of wines that Club members rated highly over the last year. The wines will be accompanied with a selection of appetizers to complement the wines and will also fea- ture a selection of Christmas baking and treats made by members of the Club.

In September, members met at South Centre Mall to view the display of woodworking exhibits by the Southern Alberta Woodworkers Society (SAWS). Ten members of the Club were in attendance and the display was excellent. Afterward, we gathered at the Food Court for coffee and caught up on what members had been up to over the summer. Thanks to Tim for arranging the meeting and to all that could make it.

Stu Boyer has arranged the next meeting, which is one you won’t want to miss. It'll be held the last Wednesday in October, October 28th, at John Morel’s shop south of Calgary, where we will learn how to apply veneer to projects.

Russ Kish has arranged the November meeting, which will be a tour of Artistic Stairs manufacturing. If you’ve ever wondered how those beautiful spiral staircases are made, this will be the meeting to attend.
