(P-D) By JEFF FIGLER SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH 04/09/2010 The origin of the National Basketball Association as we know it today dates back to 1946. However, the amount of sports collectibles is not nearly as much as you would think. Yes, there are jerseys, cards, programs, shoes, and even signed basketballs, but there is also a really unique, and quite valuable item that does not fall into any of the aforementioned categories. Adorning one of the walls in the sports gallery of the Figler Foundation Museum is a lithograph of the 50 Greatest Players of the NBA from 1946-1996. This isn't just any lithograph. No, no. This is the official lithograph of the 50 greatest players of the NBA in its first 50 years. It has an individual head shot of each player, as well as the signature of 49 of the 50 stars. The missing signature is of the incomparable Pete Maravich. “Pistol Pete” died of a heart attack in 1988. Playing a pickup basketball game, no less. This treasure was distributed by Field of Dreams and authorized by the NBA. The price tag on this piece has multiplied several times, and I even heard that this lithograph was being auctioned for upwards of $100,000. Several of the players besides Maravich are now deceased, including George Mikan, Dave DeBusschere, Paul Arizin, and of course, Wilt Chamberlain. This lithograph is worth acquiring if you can. It is limited to 250 individually numbered pieces. For any Kobe Bryant fan, he is not part of this litho, as the 1996-97 season was his rookie year in the NBA. Chances are you will see Bryant, along with Dwayne Wade and LeBron James in the lithograph of the greatest NBA players of the next 50 years. .

Mount St. Mary’s institution now a college basketball Hall of Famer The national collegiate record 49 seasons Jim Phelan spent coaching men’s basketball at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg are part of the game’s lore. Overlooked is the fact that Phelan spent another 16 years being educated at Catholic institutions. From a parish school in South Philadelphia to the Catoctin Mountains, he spent 65 years on campuses affiliated with the church. Phelan, who on Nov. 23 is to be enshrined in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Mo., connects some remarkable dots as he reminisces. It seems the older the anecdote the better, whether the topic is his 830 wins, the NCAA College Division title the Mountaineers won in 1962, or his trademark bowtie. Phelan, 79, was a child of the Great Depression who sneaked into the massive bowl then known as Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia for Army-Navy football games. His youth revolved around St. Monica parish at 17th and Ritner, where he first discovered the City of Brotherly Love’s passion for basketball. “St. Monica had to be the only parish team to have two kids who would play pro basketball,” Phelan said. “Paul Arizin (named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history) was in the eighth grade when I was in the seventh, but our team went nowhere. “Basketball was a rough and tumble game at the parish level, and I learned how to play a little bit scared. That’s also where I learned about loyalty.” Phelan remained in Philadelphia, playing for La Salle College High School and then La Salle University.

George Mikan, the 6'10" center of the Minneapolis Lakers died on Thursday at the age of 80. He was the first big man in professional basketball, the first in college basketball, and he was a key reason the NBA succeeded when other leagues had failed. Leonard Koppett in his history of the NBA called the first eight years of league existence the "The Mikan Era." That is certainly how I remember those years as a boy in Minneapolis. George Mikan led the Minneapolis Lakers to championship level play from 1947 through 1954, with a curtain call a bit later.
