he First Union Center, directly across the way from the First Union Spectrum, Topened in the fall of 1996. The facility boasts the best of everything, with state-of-the- art suites and a restaurant overlooking the court just two of its many advantages. This season, Villanova will play four games there: Penn (Dec. 10); St. John’s (Feb. 11); Connecticut (Feb. 15); and Pittsburgh (Mar. 9). The First Union Center is also the home of the NBA’s and the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers, and has hosted the largest hockey and basketball crowds in Pennsylvania history. The arena opened its doors to 21,305 fans when the Sixers hosted Chicago on April 17,1998, and 20,291 fans when the Flyers host- ed Detroit on May 31, 1997 for Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals. The First Union Center hosted the NBA Finals in the spring of 2001 and in 2002 hosted the NBA All-Star Game. The First Union Center features 30 conces- sion stands on two separate levels and has 23 ticket windows. The building has a unique oval design which ensures no obstructed views for all 21,000 fans.

The Fight Against Cancer: Coaches vs. Cancer Villanova Does Its Part

uring his seven-year tenture at Hofstra University, Jay Wright’s Pride program was involved with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long DIsland. The Pride also made annual holiday visits to the Nassau County Medical Center. Wright was also a part of the Coaches vs. Cancer movement and has continued his involvement since returning to the Main Line in 2001. Coaches vs. Cancer was founded on Oct. 18, 1993 in the wake of the death of former North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano along with the news that former Missouri coach Norm Stewart was battling the disease. The National Association of Basketball Coaches formed a partnership with the American Cancer Society. In 1995, the Women’s Basketball Association joined the partnership. The Division I basketball coaches in the metropolitan Philadelphia area have been a part of the fight ever since. A golf outing is held each year in October and since its inception, the event has raised over $115,000 for the American Cancer Society. In addition to the golf outing, each school — Drexel, La Salle, Pennsylvania, St. Joseph’s, Temple and Villanova — participates in the 3- Attack Program where alumni and friends pledge money per 3-point shot during the regular season and then make a final donation at season’s end. In 1998 a new tradition was borne to benefit the local Coaches Vs. Cancer chapter. A tipoff breakfast was developed and in each of the past two years that event has been held the Monday morning following NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday. Those interested in the Three-Point Attack program or in making a one- time donation can telephone (215) JOIN-ACS or contact Coaches Vs. Cancer at the American Cancer Society, 1626 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
