    The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe College lefties drafted by Red Sox have small sample sizes but big hopes Julian McWilliams There was natural anxiety for players entering this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth.

    FAIRPORT LITTLE LEAGUE Little League Baseball Was Founded In

    FAIRPORT LITTLE LEAGUE Little League baseball was founded in 1939 by Carl Stotz in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and has been a part of the Perinton and Fairport scene since 1951. In 1950, the Fairport Rotary Club asked several of its members to investigate the possibility of bringing Little League to the community. (East Rochester already had four teams.) It was hoped that teams could be organized to play a short season in the spring and summer of 1950. Sponsors pledged $200 each to supply uniforms and equipment, and a local builder offered to level an area in Potter Park for a diamond. However, residents of Potter Place were not happy with the prospect of screaming children and heavy traffic three to four nights each week and complained to the Village Board. The Board ruled that village property could not be used by any outside organization and since Little League was headquartered in Pennsylvania, they could not use Potter Park. Little League was on hold, but not for long. The next year, 1951, four organizations, Lions, Masons, Rotary, and the Fairport Fire Department formulated plans for bringing baseball to Perinton and Fairport youngsters. The executive committee included Tod Malcolm, Napoleon Mancuso, Gene Malcolm, and Hugh Stevely. The fields would be located in the then unused Fairport Park (today’s Perinton Park). Frank Wood, a local contractor, volunteered to bulldoze the area, and volunteers from the sponsoring organization completed the preparation. That year, Little League began its first season in Fairport/Perinton with four teams and 48 players. The games were popular and had many fans, among them a young man who was, because of crippling rheumatoid arthritis, unable to play.

They arrived in October for what in every way has been a fresh start. Pivetta, 28, spent nearly five years with the Philadelphia Phillies. He made his major league debut with the team in 2017, won his first game a few weeks later, and struck out 13 Cardinals one memorable night in 2018. But he welcomed the trade to Boston. It was time. “I can’t speak on behalf of the Phillies. But I don’t feel they valued me as a starter anymore,” Pivetta said. “I was ready for some new scenery. It was best for both parties.” That was easily confirmed, a Phillies official saying the team felt Pivetta was more confident in his abilities than a career 5.40 earned run average suggested he should be. They recognized his talent but were frustrated by his stubbornness.
