Bill Bowerman Papers Location: Special Collections & University Archives Call #: UA 003 Online finding aid: http://nwda-db.wsulibs.wsu.edu/findaid/ark:/80444/xv98511 This collection comprises the papers of American track and field coach Bill Bowerman, who led the University of Oregon track team, 1948-1972, and the Olympic track team, 1972. Collection includes correspondence, journals, athlete information, publications, and photographs reflecting Bowerman's career as a coach and his involvement in the track and field community in Oregon and the United States. Of particular note in the collection are materials concerning Bowerman's innovations in track surfaces and equipment, running , and training programs, and materials concerning the restoration of Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. The collection also includes manuscripts and notes related to Bowerman's career as a writer, including his book Jogging (1966) which sold over one million copies and helped start wide interest in the sport.

As a freshman at the University of Oregon, he appeared on the cover of "Sports illustrated." By the time he died at age 24, Pre held all 7 American records between 2,000 and 10,000 meters. Off the track he fought for the rights of amateur athletes to prosper from their sacrifices.
