Papers, 1960s-1997, of Scotland Forward concerning the Scottish Parliament referendum campaign. The papers comprise strategy documents, reports, memoranda, correspondence, press releases, campaign literature and a diary charting campaigning activities in the run-up to the referendum on 11 September 1997. The collection also includes some miscellaneous papers and memoranda of other political organisations involved in the devolution debate. The papers reflect widely the organisation and development of the campaigning activities of Scotland Forward, with a special emphasis on media activity which was led by Sam Ghibaldan, Scotland Forward’s media officer. Duplicates have been weeded. Item No 3 is not to be issued until 1st January 2018. The papers have been arranged into two series: 1-5 SCOTLAND FORWARD 6-11 MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS

1-5 SCOTLAND FORWARD 1. Strategy papers, 1996-1997, of Scotland Forward including polling, campaign, media strategy and briefings, national and some regional results of devolution referendum. 2. Letters, June-September 1997, of Scotland Forward mostly to newspapers. 3. Diary, 7 August-9 September 1997, of the Scotland Forward campaign mostly containing lists of contacts, with notes of campaign meetings with political party representatives including Jack McConnell and Mike Russell, and some references to negotiations between Labour and the SNP regarding the deployment of Tony Blair and Sean Connery to support the campaign. Some pages have been partially torn. [Not to be issued until 1st January 2018]. 4. Scotland Forward press releases, July-September 1997. 5. Scotland Forward campaign literature, c. 1997.

Miscellaneous copies of press releases, memoranda and papers, 1997, of various political organisations including the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, the SNP, Scottish Liberal Democrats, Scottish Labour Party, Scottish Constitutional Convention and Democracy for Scotland. 10. News cuttings, 1979-1997, concerning devolution and the 1979 and 1997 referenda. Mostly photocopies with some originals. 11. Statements, July 1997, from the Rt. Hon. Donald Dewar MP, Secretary of State for Scotland, and the Rt. Hon. Ron Davies MP, Secretary of State for Wales, on the Government’s proposals for A Scottish Parliament and a Welsh Assembly, with copies of the white papers presented to Parliament.
