Bonavista Peninsula Bedrock Mapping Project Highlights of the Multi-Year (2013-2018) Bonavista Peninsula Bedrock Mapping Project Andrea Mills The Geological Survey resumed bedrock mapping of the Bonavista Peninsula in 2013, building upon previous work conducted in the early 2000s. The project, now nearing completion, involved compilation of all previous work, as well as new structural, geochemical and geochronological studies to gain a better understanding of the geology of the peninsula. Rocks of particular interest on the Bonavista Peninsula include ash-covered marine turbidites that host Ediacaran biota, ancient glacial deposits, diverse volcanic assemblages as well as slates and cupriferous rocks having potential economic significance. Discovery Aspiring Geopark Incorporated, in collaboration with Government of Newfoundland Labrador and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), continues its efforts to have parts of the Bonavista Peninsula recognized as an UNESCO Global Geopark to highlight its geological and paleontological importance. Significant aspects of the Geopark include Ediacaran biota similar to those at the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve. Other notable rocks include glacigenic diamictite, called the Trinity facies, which has been correlated with the Gaskiers Formation (Conception Group of the Avalon Peninsula) through U-Pb (TIMS) geochronology. Correlation of these two map units has major implications for stratigraphic interpretations of the Avalon Terrane, highlighting the need for revision of existing compilation maps. Volcanic rocks, while mainly spatially restricted to the western part of the peninsula, also include (in the Robinhood Bay area) spectacular exposures of peperite – a rock formed by the intrusion and mingling of volcanic rock into unconsolidated, wet sediment. Economically significant rocks on the peninsula include the Blue Point, Copper Gulch and Tickle Cove (among other) copper prospects. These showings are hosted by reduced horizons within the terrestrial redbeds of the Crown Hill Formation, and were discovered in the early 2000s during exploration for sedimentary-hosted stratiform copper deposits. The Clarenville-Bonavista Regional Council was appointed in August 2005 and held its first meeting in October 2005. The contents of this report outline the council’s activities for the remaining five months of the fiscal year. The Regional Council has been very busy understanding issues related to demographic change, infrastructure, skills development, private sector investment and the provision of public services and programs. These first meetings served as an orientation to the council’s role and responsibilities. The council received regional specific information that enabled it to better understand the opportunities and challenges within the region. Over the coming months, the council will work towards the identification of regional priorities and will initiate a citizen engagement process to begin to further refine these priorities.

    2.0 The Bonavista Peninsula Management District 2.1 General Description The Bonavista Peninsula comprises a significant portion of Forest Management District 2 (see Figure 1). The District is bounded by channels within Bonavista Bay known as Clode Sound and Chandler Reach on the north and by Trinity Bay on the east. District 2 narrows on its southern boundary, where it is bounded by an extension of Trinity Bay known as Bull Arm and by the northern bottom of Placentia Bay. The western boundary is formed by Pipers Hole River and by a line which meanders north from the headwaters of that river system through Middle Pond and Norsemans Pond to a point just north of Ocean Pond. From there the boundary follows a straight line east for approximately 8 kilometres and then north along a straight line for Figure 2.1. Map showing boundaries of Forest Management District 02 approximately 15 kilometres, through Ams Pond and Bittern Pond to a point on the ridge that lies between the Terra Nova and Northwest Rivers. Then the boundary follows a generally eastern direction, to the north of the Northwest River system, for approximately16 kilometres to intersect with a corner of the Terra Nova National Park boundary. From there it follows the Park boundary in a southerly direction for approximately 3.5 kilometres and then to the east for another 1.5 kilometres to the junction of Salmon Brook and Clode Sound. The population of the District is 25,290 (census - 2004). The peninsula portion of the District is the most densely populated, with coastal communities scattered around its sheltered bays.

Langille1 Regional Geology Section 1Department of Earth Sciences, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, NL, A1B 3X5 ABSTRACT The Bull Arm Formation is one of the most areally extensive volcanic units in the Avalon Terrane of Newfoundland. His- torically, the age has been interpreted from the single previous U–Pb zircon age (570 +5/-3 Ma) obtained from a rhyolite flow on Wolf Island, where no contact relations are exposed. This rhyolite was later re-interpreted as the lower part of the overly- ing Rocky Harbour Formation but the initial interpretation as Bull Arm Formation had by then become entrenched in the lit- erature. New U–Pb zircon (CA-TIMS) geochronology results have been obtained for two rock samples from the volcanic-dom- inated Bull Arm Formation, Musgravetown Group, on the Bonavista Peninsula (Plate Cove volcanic belt) of northeastern Newfoundland, and one sample from the Isthmus that connects the Avalon Peninsula to the rest of the Island. A 40-cm-thick crystal-ash tuff near the base of the Plate Cove volcanic belt, at the roadcut east of Summerville, yielded an age of 592 ± 2.2 Ma. A lapilli tuff, located approximately 1800 m to the east, at the eastern margin of the volcanic belt, yielded an age of 591.3 ± 1.6 Ma.

    AGING WELL IN RURAL PLACES Newfoundland & Labrador FINAL REPORT Pilot Site: Bonavista A Research Project for The Seniors Resource Centre, St. John’s In partnership with the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging & Dalhousie University July 15th, 2002 Executive Summary In August 2002, the Seniors Resource Centre joined in partnership with the Nova Scotia Centre for Aging, Dalhousie University and their many partners to undertake the gathering of information as it relates specifically to seniors living in rural places and the topic of depression. The project’s purpose is to design an evidence-based strategy for developing social marketing messages and formats in communities in order to address problems of depression among rural seniors in Atlantic Canada. The research was conducted in all four Atlantic Provinces. Pilot sites were identified based on the certain criteria including demographics such as population and the numbers of seniors per capita. In Newfoundland the pilot site chosen was Bonavista, a rural fishing community located on the East coast about 350 km (a 3 ½ hour drive) from the capital city of St. John’s. Other pilot sites identified included: § Central West Prince Prince Edward Island § Musquodoboit Nova Scotia § Caraquet New Brunswick A complete description of these pilot sites can be found in the Appendix. The full title of this project is “Aging Well in Rural Places; Development and Pilot Testing of a Community Based Strategy for Addressing Depression in Seniors in Atlantic Canada”. The Seniors Resource Centre hired Cyndy Stead as a community coordinator and over the course of the next four months, September – December 2001; the coordinator organized a newly formed Community Working Group to aide in the collection of information.

    On the ichnofossil Treptichnus pedum: inferences from the Nagaur Sandstone, Marwar Supergroup, India Mukund SharMa, ShaMiM ahMad, SantoSh k. Pandey & kuldeeP kuMar Sandstone-mudstone interfaces offer an excellent medium for the preservation of the burrows. This study discusses the morphology, ecological niche and correlation based of 291 Treptichnus pedum specimens of the lower Cambrian Nagaur Sandstone, western Rajasthan, India. Petrological attributes of the host sediment are also addressed. Statistical analyses of size (length, width and gap of each segment of T. pedum) were conducted to determine the inter-specific variation. Data suggest that the entire Nagaur assemblage was made by one major group of makers. Overall morphology suggests that these burrows were probably made for shelter and trapping small epibenthic or endobenthic organisms. An overview of the global occurrence of T. pedum shows broad environment tolerance. The Nagaur specimens are compared with various recorded occurrences of T. pedum to assess the nature of the plausible producer organism, its behaviour and taphonomical aspects. • Key words: Treptichnus, Priapulid, Cambrian, Nagaur Group, Marwar Supergroup.
