A discussion took place regarding: - the number of job vacancies in Newquay. - the number of people unemployed. - the businesses that used to offer accommodation to their workers/seasonal workers onsite or nearby. - A number of businesses are renting their properties out this year rather than offering them to their workers. - Businesses are needing additional staff this year as they are busier, and to comply with covid restrictions. - Young people are still in school and not available for seasonal work until they break up. Page 2 of 5 Information Classification: PUBLIC Minutes Action There is currently no data available to show the comparison from last year. Action: Member of the strategy team to attend a future meeting to update the Panel if appropriate 4 Newquay Safe Zoe Wonnacott provided a presentation to the Panel to give an overview of the work and priorities of Newquay Safe (attached with the notes). 5 Community Network Highways Scheme AD updated the Panel on the Community Network Highways Scheme and current status of the budget (attached with the notes). Currently working from estimated figures - estimated underspend of £50K. Projects are already allocated to this, so not asking for Expression of Interest at this time. Awaiting firm figures and will share these asap. AD At present no decision has been made regarding future Community Network Highways Schemes/funding and if this will continue/another 4 years etc. It would be advisable to wait for the outcome of this decision before undertaking anymore prioritisation or discussing it further. The costs have now been reviewed and there are some changes to the estimated costs of the schemes that were put forward before. One of the round 2 schemes (crossing at a school) has come in significantly higher than estimated – need to discuss further the recommendations for this scheme with the Highways Manager to agree which proposal to go with. Action – VF to pick this up with Highways Manager on behalf of Cllr Monk. AD confirmed there have been no changes to the list of schemes. VF 6 Cornwall Council Update Kevin Towill CC – Newquay Porth & Tretherras There is currently an urgent safety issue outside a local school which needs to be addressed. VF confirmed she was made aware of this issue today. VF has asked her team to look at an Experimental Traffic Order which can be done a lot Page 3 of 5 Information Classification: PUBLIC Minutes Action quicker and lasts for a certain amount of time. VF reiterated there are currently a huge amount of Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) going through the system all requiring design and expertise, but the team are looking at this as it’s a key safety issue. The team work with Sustrans who go into schools and work closely with the school and parents to look at alternative ways of getting to school. Action: VF to ask Sustrans to go into the school to support them. VF to feed VF back to KT. PM/VF to approach the Duchy to discuss the issue. PM/VF Louis Gardner CC – Newquay Central & Pentire Have had discussions with Public Health England and NHS Cornwall regarding additional vaccinations for the Newquay area due to the latest rise in cases. It has been agreed there will be an increased number of vaccinations from next week. The pharmacy on Chester Road will offer these on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. John Fitter CC – St Columb Minor & Colan A live application is currently with Planning for an outdoor Cinema in a field in Watergate Bay. The application is for 4 days a week, catering up to 1200 people in any one day. The application has been contentious, and St Mawgan Parish Council will be objecting. JK confirmed Newquay Town Council are yet to make a decision regarding an objection. Hoping to get some additional signage this year to divert the traffic away from Quintrell Downs and direct the Newquay north traffic in via the road past St Columb Major and the RAF Station, and up to Nansledan roundabout. Olly Monk CC – Newquay Trenance CC has launched an initiative to move people living in temporary accommodation such as hotels and B&B’s into more semi-permanent accommodation. Currently looking at a couple of sites in Newquay and will update further once these have been agreed. Trenance Boating Lake is being cleared of weeds etc on July 11th. Page 4 of 5 Information Classification: PUBLIC Minutes Action Verges – mixed feelings locally regarding the cutting of verges, especially in terms of visibility when driving. 7 Town and Parish Council Update Susan Theobald, St Wenn Parish Council Now have 3 defibrillators up and running and registered with the Ambulance Service. St Wenn Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) is fast approaching referendum stage and awaiting date. Cllr Louis Gardner – Newquay Town Council There is a lot of demand for more CCTV in the town and further out. Killacourt Project is almost finished and just awaiting some planting and finishing touches. Newquay in Bloom have been entered into South West in Bloom – awaiting results. The town is extremely busy, and busier than usual this year. 8 Next Meeting Thursday 9th September 2020 - 7pm. Page 5 of 5 .
