Within temperate estuaries in the southern hemisphere, espe- cially Australia and New Zealand, the cordgrass Spartina spp. has become established. These species are highly invasive, and their prolific growth leads to the development of supratidal environments in formerly intertidal and subtidal environments. Here, we quantified the impact of Spartina invasion on the geomorphology and sequestration capacity of carbon in the sediments of Anderson Inlet, Victoria, Australia. Spartina was first introduced to the area in the 1930s to aid in land reclamation and control coastal erosion associated with coastal development. We found that Spartina now dominates the intertidal areas of the Inlet and promotes accretion (18 mm/year) causing the formation of over 108 ha of supratidal islands over the past 100 years. These newly formed islands are calculated to potentially contain over 5.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent carbon.

    Work Program – Part D 18 Bunurong Coast and Inlets Management Unit Figure 26 Conceptual diagram of the Bunurong Coast and Inlets Management Unit The Bunurong Coast and Inlets management unit supports a number of coastal wetlands, estuaries and tributary waterways. Anderson Inlet and Shallow Inlet are listed under the Directory of Important Wetlands of Australia and Shallow Inlet is an internationally important shorebird site in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. The coastal waterways of this management unit support a range of recreational and tourism values including fishing, kite surfing, boating, kayaking and bird watching as well as being a growth area for coastal development. Ecologically, these systems are of critical importance for migratory birds, rare and threatened bird and fish populations, commercial and recreational fish species and the presence of large tracts of intact fragile vegetation communities including saltmarsh and coastal woodland. Threats to South Gippsland’s coastal wetlands and inlets include; poor water quality from catchment sources, invasion of Spartina in the intertidal zone, predation of fauna by foxes, foreshore erosion and changes to sea level due to climate variability. During the life of the RHS there was a major effort in controlling the invasive aquatic weed Spartina in Anderson Inlet. This was complemented by fencing to exclude stock access and establishment of native vegetation. More recently work has started to address erosion of the foreshore and tributary waterways of Shallow Inlet. This Strategy will continue efforts to contain and prevent reinfestation of Spartina in Anderson Inlet. Establishing native vegetation and fencing to exclude stock will help maintain coastal vegetation communities and prevent foreshore erosion across both Shallow Inlet and Anderson Inlet.

The West Gippsland region is about 2.9 West Gippsland public The West Gippsland region extends across west, south land and central Gippsland, from Warragul and San Remo in 59% the west to the Gippsland Lakes in the east, and from the and includes Great Dividing Range in the north to Wilsons Promontory in the south. About 59 per cent of the region is public land. The West Gippsland CMA is responsible for more than 40,000 kilometres of waterways, including major rivers 40,000 and creeks and the tributaries that flow into them. These waterways flow to the Victorian coast, discharging kilometres of waterways either through the Gippsland Lakes, to coastal inlets and embayments (Anderson Inlet, Shallow Inlet, Corner Inlet) or directly to Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean. The waterways of West Gippsland are highly valued recreationally, socially, economically and culturally. They include two internationally important wetlands listed under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands – Gippsland Lakes and Corner Inlet. Many of the region’s natural assets including waterways are of particular importance to Traditional Owners and other Aboriginal people. For example, the Gunaikurnai people’s creation story of Borun the pelican and Tuk the musk duck originates from the areas around Wilsons Promontory.
