By Rabbi Shae J. Kane D.D. As we celebrate Passover this year beginning with the Seder on Friday evening April 22nd, I thought you might find this story of interest. My grandfather’s Passover Seder, by Yakov Brachfeld A raging fire burned through Europe through the years 1939 – 1945, destroying European Jewry. Mendel and Moshe Brachfeld – my great uncle and grandfather – were two brothers who walked through the fires of the Holocaust together. After the rest of their family was killed by the Nzis they made a pact that they will stay together any cost. They survived together, grew together and were welded together. These two brothers outsmarted the Nzi machine by staying alive, staying sane, sticking together and staying strong in their mitzvah observance. They survived the war and rebuilt their lives, raising generations of committed , and today are buried next to each other on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Many survivors were never able to speak about the horrors that they witnessed. My grandfather would never speak of the killing and torture but he would recount as often as he could tales of spiritual growth in the most harrowing of situations. How he and his older brother, with great sacrifice, managed to put on t’fillin almost every day in that hell. How they smuggled t’fillin from camp to camp, how at one point 500 Jews would line up every morning to put on their t’fillin. How they broke open a jail cell and over 100 people were able to escape. How they found a mikvah before Yom Kippur and how they survived on only potatoes one Passover. Many stories, all with the same theme – not of horror but of heroism. There is one story that was repeated every year at the Passover Seder – when my grandfather and his brother celebrated Passover in the Krakow ghetto in 1943. On the Run in Krakow During World War II, the Nzis established more than 400 ghettos in order to isolate Jews from the non-Jewish population and from neighboring Jewish communities. The Germans regarded the establishment of ghettos as a provisional measure to control and segregate Jews. The assumption behind this separation was to stop the Jews, viewed by the Nzis as an inferior race, from mixing with and thus degrading the superior Aryan race. Nzi high officials also believed that the Jews would succumb to the unfavorable living conditions of the ghetto, including lack of food, water, and living space. Furthermore, the ghettos served as round-up centers that made it more convenient to exterminate large numbers of the Jewish population later. The Brachfeld brothers were living in in the Krakow Ghetto, one of the bigger ghettos in Poland1 which was established in March 1941. In March 1943, five weeks before Passover, the Germans liquidated the ghetto either killing or removing all remaining Jews. The great city of Krakow – a city that had been home to Jews for 700 years – was officially declared Judenrein – clean of Jews. continues on next page madisonjc.org Page Three

The two brothers understood that listening to the Germans surely would lead to their deaths. They decided to go into hiding. In the five weeks leading up to Passover. They were caught along with 100 other Jews, and managed to break out of jail. They were running from attic to attic, trying desperately to stay alive and working on getting papers that they could use to escape. With Passover approaching, the two brothers wanted to find a way to eat matzah on the first night of Yom Tov. It took a lot of inventiveness and sacrifice – getting caught meant getting shot – but they found some flour and built themselves a makeshift oven. They found a blech [is a metal sheet used to cover stovetop burners] and some highly flammable paint. They set the paint on fire and were able to kasher the blech – and they had a kosher for Passover oven. They baked a few small matzahs for the Seder. (How the smell of burning paint was not detected by the Germans can either be a miracle or perhaps the stench of dead corpses in the ghetto was so overwhelming that the smell of burning paint was insignificant.) The night of Passover came and they sat down to their makeshift Seder, celebrating the Jewish exodus from Egypt in a hidden attic on Jozefonsky Street in the Krakow ghetto. In years past they had sat at a beautiful set table with the finest silver and surrounded by family. Tonight they sat down in a dark attic, all alone in the world, running from the Nzis, their very lives in danger, with a bit of matzah for which they sacrificed their lives. Maror was not needed; they had enough of that in their lives. My grandfather, then 21 years old, said to his older brother, "There is no way I can have a Seder tonight. The Seder is to celebrate our freedom, our going out of exile, yet here we sit, our lives in danger, our family is all gone, our parents, sister and her children were all killed, the entire city is up in flames. The Nzis, with their wild dogs searching for us, won't be happy until every Jew is dead. Isn't this worse than the lives the Jews had in Egypt? What kind of freedom are we celebrating tonight?" His brother answered, "Every night in the evening prayers we praise God for taking us out of Egypt to an 'everlasting freedom'. The everlasting freedom that we gained and are thankful for isn't a physical freedom – that is only a byproduct of what we got that night. Rather it's the spiritual freedom that we recognize. Passover celebrates the birth of a nation, when we went from being Egyptian slaves to becoming a newly born Jewish nation – a nation that God could call his own. When we sit down at the Seder we celebrate something bigger than life, a going out of slavery into the embracing hands of our Father in heaven, becoming a Godly nation. This is something that no one can ever take away from us. No matter how much they beat, torture and kill our physical bodies, our souls will always remain free to serve God." With those words the two brothers, my grandfather and his older brother, sat down to a Seder that consisted of dangerously produced matzah and a little bit of borscht in place of wine. My grandfather often said that this was the most magnificent Seder he ever experienced. Page Four Madison Jewish Center

President’s Message

APRIL 2016

Greetings everyone. Spring has sprung so we can look forward to our celebration of Passover. The first Seder is Friday evening, April 22nd. Passover is the one Jewish holiday when Jews all over the world, no matter how far removed from synagogue life, seem to remember that they are Jewish. At the very least, they buy a box of matzah. And, then there are those of us who spend weeks cleaning, changing dishes, cooking special foods and inviting friends and family for one or two Seders. If you would like to attend a Seder and it is too difficult for you to prepare one or if you have room at your Seder for one or two guests please call the office at 339-7755 or me, Roy Alexander, at 375-9842 and we will try to match you up. At my home every year we try to invite guests who might otherwise not attend a Passover Seder.

March was a busy month at Madison. We began with a delicious Shabbat Across America dinner on Friday evening, March 4th. At services afterwards we were treated to the sounds of our Hebrew school children led by Arlene Kane, Morgan Hesse and Ethan Allone. Sisterhood’s Torah Fund Brunch was well attended and featured historian Ron Schweiger whose topic was “Brooklyn and the Jews”. Our Purim masquerade ball on March 19th proved to be an evening of merriment for all who attended. Rabbi and Arlene Kane led a wonderful Purim program for sisterhood, et al, on Monday evening March 21st. A crowd of children and adults, dressed in costume, attended our Purim carnival and M’gillah reading Wednesday evening, March 23rd.

This month Sisterhood is running a trip to the Tenement Museum on Orchard Street on the “lower east side”. The museum features actual apartments of past residents from different time periods. Rabbi Kane’s adult education classes resume Wednesday, April 6th. Cantor Rimer’s classes begin in May. We have a bus trip to Atlantic City planned for Tuesday, April 26th during HolHamoed.

I thought it would be a good idea to highlight, each month, a member of the shul so that we might become more familiar with each other. This month the spotlight falls on Sheila Weissman-Goodman, who has been associated with Madison since 1982. After working in the office for 8 years she became a member along with her then husband Michael who passed away in 1995. Sheila married her current sweetheart, Bert, in 2002. Aside from working on fundraising for Devorah Hospital, traveling and reading mysteries and historical novels, Sheila has been an Avon lady for 26 years. She is also a past co-president of Sisterhood and a regular Shabbat service attendee. I always figure that if she and Bert are not in shul, she must be in Atlantic City or Vegas.

Shalom,

THE LATEST FROM SISTERHOOD

APRIL 2O16

Sunday, March 6, 2016 was another Maj and Mingle program from 10-12. Thank you Teresa Gottesmann for chairing this event and organizing the program and refreshments.

Our Annual Torah Fund Brunch was a huge success. Ron Schweiger, the Brooklyn Historian, spoke about the History of the Jews in Brooklyn. Everyone who attended enjoyed the discussion and slides that were presented. Thank you Marlene Podell for chairing this program and organizing this event including the food.

All who attended had a good time at the Inter-affiliate Purim Masquerade Ball. Purim cards were sold by Sisterhood as well.

Thank you so much Rabbi Kane for conducting a Purim Program and Arlene Kane for supplying the music for the event. All who attended the event enjoyed it tremendously. It was both informative and entertaining.

Sisterhood will be having a trip to the Tenement Museum on Sunday, April 3, 2016. There are limited tickets available for the one hour tour from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Please contact the co- chairs of the event, Rachel Streich or Ilene Shapiro for tickets.

You should have received your invitations and flyers for our Annual Fashion Show which will be held on Thursday, May 26, chaired by Barbara Stein. The Sisterhood Board meeting on Monday, April 18 will be devoted to the Fashion Show. For the Fashion Show, donations of new goods or money would be appreciated to offset our expenses.

Happy Passover, Hag Pesah Sameah, Zissen Pesah!
