In an earlier publication (2003), Brougère analysed the social dimension of the toy where it was viewed as part of a socially built system of networks involving many actors (manufacturers, parents, children and others) and many processes (manufacturing, distributing, advertising, buying, giving presents, using, playing, destroying). However, this interdependent system must be considered first through the objects that form the nodes of this network as only by examining its material culture can we can better understand the way it functions. KEY WORDS children’s play • construction set • design • material culture • playthings The socio-anthropological approach to analysing objects views them away from their usual context, which involves isolating the toy house from the way it is used as well as from the way it is involved in a cultural exchange system or any kind of behaviour or practice.

Architectural Toys The construction of an education Marco Ginoulhiac Italian architect living in Portugal and lecturing at FAUP - Faculdade de Ar- quitectura da Universidade do Porto. Abstract Towards the end of the XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth century, the toy market created a number of toys based on an emerging educational method under- lined by a constructivist approach. Indeed, both in Europe and United States, many companies were inspired by what was happening, almost at the same time, in sev- eral schools of Art and Architecture, in which the design studio teaching was based on an “atelier” system and pupils developed skills and autonomy through their own action. The paradigm of practice based on task simulation, either scien- tific or artistic, is still clearly visible in a number of toys which promoted skills development through playing.

HAPPY HOLIDAY Yes, it’s that time of year again – so we wish all our readers the compliments of the season as we carefully steer a PC course between celebration and not giving offence. There was a time when the 25th of December could be celebrated as a Christian festival but it has long since reverted to its Saturnalia origin and consumption is the name of the game. So, what would you like for a 25th December gift? Can the family be persuaded to go down to the local Marks and Spencer and investigate the “Big Boys Toys” section, or will you specify exactly what you want and provide the name of a suitable supplier – “One boxed GRB, please – yes, I know it’s only one part, but I don’t like to ask for too much”. There is certainly plenty of Meccano about, be it Nikko new or red and green traditional. Among our own members interest in (and modelling with) blue/gold seems to be undergoing something of a resurgence. Some people still use (to very good effect) nickel plated Meccano from early last century. This bumper edition of the MSS Newsletter contains a lot of reports of exhibitions where, in most cases, a healthy interest in things Meccano was demonstrated by the public. In addition the recent Harrods exhibition seems to have been a great success (see Meccano on the Internet section). In Scotland we have three new members of the Society and membership is now almost 50. Things Meccano are looking up! A good Modelling New Year to all our readers.
