Quick warning. Today's episode involves some discussion of sexual violence. It comes up early, and we wanted to give you a heads up. 00:00:08 Music Music Quiet music with melodic singing. 00:00:12 Ben Harrison Host The French title of today’s film is Rebelle, which is a true cognate: means the same in English as you would guess. But that’s not its English title, maybe because the word "rebel" has been so thoroughly monopolized in English by a single entertainment franchise. Rebels have graduated from bullseyeing womp rats in their T-16s and are now taking the fight to the Empire. But despite that near monopoly of association, it remains easy for the media to completely rob us of a nuanced understanding of a civil conflict by using the term "rebel" to describe one of the sides. It starts to evoke terms like "freedom fighters," which we've all been trained to mentally translate as "terrorists." In today’s film, our main character Komona feels so far from all of these definitions. She is a twelve-year-old girl, who is basically too young to be motivated by the forces we imagine inspire people to become rebels. In fact, it’s the rebels that completely wreck her life. Her coastal village is just sitting there minding its own business when they come collect the youngsters, force her to murder her family, and then spirit her away in a motorized tree trunk canoe to become a soldier for their cause. -

Speech by Carolle Brabant, Quebec MBA
QUEBEC MBA ASSOCIATION APRIL 25, 2012 The Canadian audiovisual industry: We mean business Speech delivered by Carolle Brabant, C.P.A., C.A., MBA Executive Director, Telefilm Canada I’d like to thank you for being here today as well as thank the Quebec MBA Association for making culture a part of these lunch-time talks. As an MBA graduate myself, I’m delighted to be able to use this forum to speak to you about a passionate and important industry for the economic and cultural future of Canada: the audiovisual industry. I decided to join this industry over 21 years ago and I’ve never regretted it. It has let me combine my passion for business with my passion for the arts. Every day, I get to work with inspirational, dynamic people who motivate me. 1/24 There’s been much talk of culture in the media these past few weeks as a result of the federal government’s recent budget cuts. But there’s also been much talk about the success garnered by Canadian productions. One need only think of the tremendous box office success enjoyed by Starbuck. It was announced this week that DreamWorks has acquired the remake rights and that Ken Scott would be the director. Then, of course, there’s Monsieur Lazhar, which made it all the way to the Oscars! The Canadian audiovisual industry is a vibrant, active industry that touches us every day through our television screens, at the movies, and increasingly on our computers and phones. It is an industry deserving of our attention, notably because of its contribution to the culture and economy of our country. -

Sight & Sound Films of 2007
Sight & Sound Films of 2007 Each year we ask a selection of our contributors - reviewers and critics from around the world - for their five films of the year. It's a very loosely policed subjective selection, based on films the writer has seen and enjoyed that year, and we don't deny them the choice of films that haven't yet reached the UK. And we don't give them much time to ponder, either - just about a week. So below you'll find the familiar and the obscure, the new and the old. From this we put together the top ten you see here. What distinguishes this particular list is that it's been drawn up from one of the best years for all-round quality I can remember. 2007 has seen some extraordinary films. So all of the films in the ten are must-sees and so are many more. Enjoy. - Nick James, Editor. 1 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu) 2 Inland Empire (David Lynch) 3 Zodiac (David Fincher) = 4 I’m Not There (Todd Haynes) The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) 6 Silent Light (Carlos Reygadas) = 7 The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik) Syndromes and a Century (Apichatpong Weerasethakul) No Country for Old Men (Ethan and Joel Coen) Eastern Promises (David Cronenberg) 1 Table of Contents – alphabetical by critic Gilbert Adair (Critic and author, UK)............................................................................................4 Kaleem Aftab (Critic, The Independent, UK)...............................................................................4 Geoff Andrew (Critic -

Michelle, pens a novel that tells the tale of Emma, who works at an artificial love doll factory… And so it goes.. -
Code Switching in Eastern Promises Film
Jurnal Ilmu Budaya Vol. 2, No. 3, Juni 2018 e-ISSN 2549-7715 Hal: 301-311 CODE SWITCHING IN EASTERN PROMISES FILM Rino Tri Wahyudi, M. Bahri Arifin, Ririn Setyowati English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences Mulawarman University Pos-el: [email protected] ABSTRACT Code switching is one of interesting topics to be discussed nowadays as it is often encountered by anyone and anywhere in the present time. Code switching appears in many literary works, and one of them is in Eastern Promises film. Eastern Promises film contains code switching of three different languages including English, Russian, and Turkish, and there is also evidence that code switching phenomenon exists in crime film. In criminal situation, the language user performs code switching for particular purposes. This research focused on analyzing the types of code switching and the social factors triggering the characters in performing code switching through descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that there were eighty-one types of code switching found by the researcher in Eastern Promises film. The researcher found three types of code switching performed by ten characters, those types are inter-sentential code switching, tag switching, and intra-sentential code switching. In addition, the researcher also found four social factors in every code switching practices, those social factors are participant, setting, topic, and function. The social factors triggering the ten characters in performing code switching in their utterances show that language variety of the ten characters is a result of relationship between language and social factors that occurs in society. Keywords: code switching, Eastern Promises film ABSTRAK Alih kode adalah salah satu topik yang menarik untuk dibahas dewasa ini sebagaimana alih kode sering ditemui oleh siapapun dan dimanapun di masa sekarang. -
Willing to Be Scammed: How Self-Control Impacts Internet Scam Compliance
Running head: Willing to be scammed: how self-control impacts Internet scam compliance Willing to be scammed: How self-control impacts Internet scam compliance Submitted by David Modic to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology In September 2012 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 2 WILLING TO BE SCAMMED WILLING TO BE SCAMMED 3 Abstract At any given moment in time, there are people complying with fraudulent requests (i.e. scams) on the Internet. While the incidence rates are low (between five and ten percent of the population becoming victims on a yearly basis), the financial and emotional consequences can be high. In this Thesis we composed a unified theory of which factors made individuals more likely to comply with scams and what psychological mechanisms are unwittingly employed by con-men to make their (illegitimate marketing) offers more enticing. The strongest overall predictor of scam compliance (i.e. the extent to which an individual is likely to comply with fraudulent requests) was the level of self-control, regardless of the observed stage of a scam. On the basis of previous research, we postulated and have empirically shown that falling for a scam is a 3-stage process (i.e. -
