Good morning Year 5 The Big Question is: What is the best way for a Christian to show commitment to God?

Activity 1 Following on from our activities on famous painter Leonardo da Vinci, we will look at different ways that people commit themselves to their religion.

Raheem Sterling Famous Manchester City footballer Raheem Sterling has become well known for standing up to racism and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. His work alongside his superb football skills has inspired many around the world and sets a great example to young people. It is a less well-known fact that Raheem is also a Christian. In 2013, citing the influence of his mother, he was quoted as saying he was "not 100 per cent religious but my belief is strong. When the time is right, I will fully be Christian." He added that he put his faith in God and that he prays regularly.

Using thought bubbles, describe what Raheem Sterling may be thinking as he performs on the pitch. You can draw a cartoon or picture of him if you like. You should draw/write 3 to 6 thought bubbles and you should mention his commitment to causes outside of football.

Activity 2 is a famous singer, actress and multi-talented woman, and has become one of the most famous performers in . It is well-known that she is a Hindu and began singing at the age of four! Think about how music may be a way of commitment to a religion. For this task, you will need to do some research on famous musicians who follow different religions. There are some names in the box to help you but try to find your own. When you have listened to their music, write notes and try to describe the emotions you feel when you listen. Christianity Islam

Activity 3

Boxer Muhammad Ali is widely known as ‘The Greatest’ (and he knew it!). Like Sterling, he was an anti-racist fighter and campaigner and even refused to fight in the US army. He also became a committed Muslim and saw the personal stands taken in his life as part of a commitment to his religion.

There are many famous quotes or phrases from Muhammad Ali, from his comments on society and injustice to his unbelievable confidence in proclaiming himself the best.
