'SNL' 40Th Anniversary #TBT: 'SNL' 40th Anniversary 02.12.2015 On Sunday, Feb. 15, NBC will air the 40th anniversary for the hit TV show and cultural touch point, Saturday Night Live. The current SNL cast will be joined by past cast members and hosts including Will Ferrell, Paul McCartney, Bradley Cooper, Jimmy Fallon and Billy Crystal - not to mention the many more big names promoted in the NBC spot below: NBC has been promoting the anniversary special plenty on its own air as well as with an emoji-filled app, a planned museum exhibit in New York this spring and a marathon of episodes on VH1 leading up to the big day. Sunday's anniversary special will also kick off with a red carpet event at Rockefeller Center hosted by the Today crew: Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Carson Daly and Al Roker. There are way too many moments from SNL to include them all, so Brief has chosen a few favorites: Weekend Update: Jane Curtin took the news segment in her own hands when people responded to her hosting, leaving her only option to prove that she can be just as sexy as her colleague Chevy Chase. Franchises: SNL has certainly been a star nursery in its own right, but it also launched characters and movie franchises that lasted years, many of which still hold up. Just one of these many brands is Mike Myers and Dana Carvey's "Wayne's World," which spawned two feature films and countless Halloween costume ideas for years to come. Remembering Stars We Lost: SNL greats Phil Hartman and Chris Farley were behind one of the most well-known sketches of the show's history: Matt Foley, motivational speaker. The Recurring Sketches: "Pumping up With Hans and Franz" is just one of several recurring characters on the show, who are so prolific they are at it even now, appearing in ads for State Farm. Musical Sketches: Steve Martin sings "King Tut" in honor of the museum exhibits traveling around the country, and continued the tradition of brief songs and performances that later made waves online as well. Special Appearances: Notable stars stop by the show often to show their lighthearted side, and nothing was better than when Nicolas Cage "got in the cage" with Nicolas Cage (aka Andy Samberg) during this Weekend Update in 2012. Notable Hosts: George Carlin was only one of many legendary comedians to take the stage as host of SNL over the years, but only Carlin has the honor of being the first host ever. Below is the show's first-ever monologue, which aired on Oct. 11, 1975. Lonely Island: Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone make up the now-famous Lonely Island, but their digital shorts and music videos were very new when "Lazy Sunday" was released in 2005. &am p;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;a mp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp; amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p& amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp ;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;am p;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;a mp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&a mp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp; amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp ;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp ;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;am p;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;a mp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&a mp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp; amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p& amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp ;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;& amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp ;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp ;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;am p;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&am p;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&am p;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;a mp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&a mp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&a mp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&a mp;amp;lt;p>&a mp;amp;lt;p>.

  • Pumping up Masculinity: the Initial Intervention and Lasting Legacy of Hans and Franz
Pumping Up Masculinity: The Initial Intervention and Lasting Legacy of Hans and Franz MASON ALLRED N 1988, WHEN ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER STEPPED ONTO THE STAGE of Saturday Night Live, appearing with the characters of Hans and I Franz, he brought a sense of reality and significance to the set. The normally absent butt of Kevin Nealon and Dana Carvey’s ongo- ing joke of ranting Teutonic bodybuilders was present and the work of mocking became especially potent. How Arnold was able to serve as the catalyst for such a series of skits had everything do with his imposing embodiment of several cultural images. As he brought a history of conceptions concerning Germanic masculinity together with a new admiration for bodybuilding, his iconic image in Holly- wood films manufactured an international model for men to emulate. Nealon and Carvey were then able to mock the emerging chauvinistic ideal of big man masculinity through ironic performance in their sketch comedy. Hans and Franz first appeared on the night of October 17, 1987. This was the Season 13 premiere of SNL and Hans and Franz debuted by introducing themselves as fitness trainers and explicitly stating their association with “their cousin Arnold.” Between outrageous insults (directed at the audience’s physical inferiority) and gratuitous muscle flexing, Hans and Franz made it clear that their task was to “Arnoldize” the world and to “pump [us] up!” While Arnold is obvi- ously the root of “Pumping Up with Hans and Franz,” closer analysis uncovers a layered comic effect in these skits produced within a significant cultural moment.

Minnie begins a complex love affair with her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, “the handsomest man in the world,” Monroe Rutherford (Alexander Skarsgård). What follows is a sharp, funny and provocative account of one girl’s sexual and artistic awakening, without judgment. Set in 1976 San Francisco, THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL begins at the crossroads of the fading hippie movement and the dawn of punk rock. News commentary of the Patty Hearst trial echoes in the background, as Minnie’s young expressive eyes soak in a drug-laden city in transition— where teenage rebellion and adult responsibility clash in characters lost and longing. Minnie’s hard-partying mother and absent father have left her rudderless. She first finds solace in Monroe’s seductive smile, and then on the backstreets of the city by the bay. Animation serves a refuge from the confusing and unstable world around her. Minnie emerges defiant— taking command of her sexuality and drawing on her newfound creative talents to reveal truths in the kind of intimate and vivid detail that can only be found in the pages of a teenage girl’s diary.

SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE: T~ST J~C_ (~ Vice Provost Date lll ABSTRACT Author: Hal E. Daniels Title: Beginning a Novel Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Dr. John Childrey Degree: Master of Arts in Teaching Year: 2002 Writing a novel is a formidable task. The average 300-page novel must contain a beginning, middle and end and is comparable to the structure of the movie screenplay. The latter comprises a first act in which characters and their situation are "set up;" a second act, which reveals the conflicts of the characters; and a third act, in which the situation and conflicts are resolved. The author, a community college writing teacher, recommends that his students create vivid characters and then write an outline. The outline will serve as a roadmap, guiding the students from the beginning of their novels (the set up) to the end. Several famous authors, including Stephen King and Elmore Leonard, insist they do not use outlines.
