Milankovitch’ Theory states that the periodic climate changes during the Earth’s Neogene were influenced by the insolation, defined as the amount of solar radiation received on a given Earth’s surface area, during a given time (W/m2); and that those periods coincide with glaciation - deglaciation cycles. A more detailed explanation of this Theory is given on Chapter 1: Astronomical Forcing. The first part of the Thesis consists in formulate and validate our model, which states that is unnecessary to add extra hypothesis (such as atmospheric behavior, the phase difference of the climate system’s response to the insolation, variations on the albedo, etc) in order to find time correlations between numerical values and proxy records. In this study, numeric models generated with INSOLA software (http://www.imcce.fr/Equipes/ASD/insola/earth/earth.html) were used, and then compared with Antarctic proxy records. Numerical calculation of insolation and proxy samples selection criteria are described in Chapter 2: Proxies and Insolation on Earth and Mars. Material and methods. The Earth’s data sample comes basically from samples of ice and gas trapped in ice stratified columns over Vostok Lake (78ºS), Epica Dronning Maud Land (68ºS), project EPICA Dome C (75.1ºS) and Taylor Dome (77.5 ºS ) results, which cover the last 800 thousand years. This information was collected from the public database of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, EE.UU, http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo). In order to validate our hypothesis, a frequency analysis of the samples and insolation data as a function of the latitude and the time of the year was performed, using the SPECTRA algorithm (which can work using non-equispaced data such as the proxies) as well as the PAST and MATLAB 7.0 ® (Mathworks, Inc.) software packages; the last one using a routine to calculate Lomb’s Periodogram, which is similar to the Fourier Transform (FT) technique. The second part of the Thesis applies our model of astronomical forcing to the paleogeographic reconstruction of the Minchin paleolakes system (15ºS - 23ºS) at the Bolivian Altiplane. Our purpose was to demonstrate that this lake system, which existed during the late Pleistocene, was a humidity source for the Estuario del Plata, contributing to a milder weather than the currently proposed, which increases the primary productivity of his area. This contributes to explain the presence of a great amount of megafauna fossils at the regions which are occupied nowadays by the Buenos Aires province and República Oriental del Uruguay. All of these aspects are explained on Chapter 3: Paleolakes and ‘Estuario del Plata’. The last part of this Thesis includes the study, applying the same model, of an aspect of the Mars’ climate related to sedimentary processes on craters and polar layer deposits of the Martian North Pole. Both processes may be explained by the astronomical forcing, but as in the Mars’ case there are not direct records (such as Earths’ proxies), high resolution images were used. In Chapter 4: Mars, the main features of Mars are described. In Chapters 5 (Milankovitch’s parameters and images form Mars) y 6 (Astronomical forcing on Mars) we explain the selection criteria of the images, their processing and results. Conclusions of frequency analysis are explained, applied both to the topography and the brightness profile of the images. We also show the frequency correlation between the results obtained from the images and the numerical calculation of the insolation. Finally on Chapter 7 (Conslusions), we present the general conclusions of the work, considering Earth and Mars results. The main results are: 1) The model was validated using the data from the Antarctica and the insolation, where the most important feature were the coincidence between the proxies’ latitude (taken as an input to calculate the insolation) and the time of the year when the insolation is calculated. 2) From

These sedimentary gaps are thought to represent prolonged periods of 15 hyperaridity in the region, with absence of sediment production and accumulation in the central depressions. 16 Their remarkable synchrony with Antarctic and Patagonian glacial stages, Humboldt cold current 17 enhancement and cold upwelling waters lead us to suggest long-term climate forcing. Higher frequency 18 climate (orbital precession and eccentricity) forcing is thought to control the sequential arrangement of the 19 lacustrine units deposited at times of lower aridity. Hyperaridity trends appear to be modulated by the activity 20 of the South American Summer Monsoon, which drives precipitation along the high altitude areas to the east 21 of Atacama. This precipitation increase combined with the eastward enlargement of the regional drainage 22 during the late Pleistocene enabled water transfer from these high altitude areas to the low lying closed 23 Quillagua basin and resulted in the deposition of the last widespread saline lacustrine deposits in this 24 depression, before its drainage was open to the Pacific Ocean.

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Phylogenomics of the Hyalella amphipod species‑fock of the Andean Altiplano Francesco Zapelloni1,3, Joan Pons2,3, José A. Jurado‑Rivera1, Damià Jaume2 & Carlos Juan1,2* Species diversifcation in ancient lakes has enabled essential insights into evolutionary theory as they embody an evolutionary microcosm compared to continental terrestrial habitats. We have studied the high‑altitude amphipods of the Andes Altiplano using mitogenomic, nuclear ribosomal and single‑ copy nuclear gene sequences obtained from 36 Hyalella genomic libraries, focusing on species of the Lake Titicaca and other water bodies of the Altiplano northern plateau. Results show that early Miocene South American lineages have recently (late Pliocene or early Pleistocene) diversifed in the Andes with a striking morphological convergence among lineages. This pattern is consistent with the ecological opportunities (access to unoccupied resources, initial relaxed selection on ecologically‑ signifcant traits and low competition) ofered by the lacustrine habitats established after the Andean uplift. Lakes with an uninterrupted history of more than 100,000 years (ancient lakes) may be considered as natural laboratories for evolutionary research as they constitute hotspots of aquatic animal speciation and phenotypic diversity1. Changes in lake size and episodes of desiccation are considered to be critical factors in the speciation and extinction of lake faunas, with the creation of new habitats afer lake expansions as the primary driver of intra-lake diversifcation2–4. For instance, cichlid radiations in the East African Lakes seem to have been trig- gered by lake expansions afer periods of intense desiccation, with the surviving species flling up empty niches afer lake reflling2.

ARCTIC VOL. 62, NO. 2 (JUNE 2009) P. 212–224 Holocene Evolution of Lakes in the Bluefish Basin, Northern Yukon, Canada BErNard LaurioL,1 Denis Lacelle,2 SylvaiN LaBrecquE,3 CLaudE r. duguaY4 and Alice TELka5 (Received 21 January 2008; accepted in revised form 16 September 2008) aBsTRACT. This study documents the Holocene evolution of lakes located in the Bluefish Basin, northern Yukon, on the basis of lake lithology, distribution of plant macrofossils, and radiocarbon dating of the basal organic material in sediment cores obtained from former lake basins. Basal organic matter from former lake basins is radiocarbon-dated to the late Holocene (< 3770 yr. BP), whereas the 14C ages from the polygonal peat plateaus (~2 m thick) that surround most of the former lake basins cluster in the early Holocene (between 11 435 and 8200 yr. BP). Plant macrofossil distribution in four out of five cores obtained in former lake basins indicates a transition from emergent aquatic vegetation to wetland and terrestrial-type vegetation, suggesting a gradual decline in water levels. The fifth core analyzed for macrofossils showed evidence of sudden lake drainage. The absence of 14C ages from the middle Holocene (7000 to 4000 yr. BP) suggests that the lakes had a greater spatial coverage and water levels during that period, a conclusion supported by the greater surface area occupied by the former lake basins relative to modern lakes and by the fact that the middle Holocene was a wet period in northern Yukon. The gradual decrease in water levels during the late Holocene could be attributed to partial drainage of lakes, increased evaporation under a drier climate, or a combination of both.

III. PALEOHYDROLOGY IIL1. A 20,000 years paleohydrological record from Lake Titicaca DENIS WIRRMANN, JEAN-PIERRE YBERT and PHILIPPE MOURGUIART The Bolivian Altiplano is an endorheic basin which extends from 16° to 20° S. Lat. and from 65° to 69°W. Long., with altitudes ranging from 3700 to 4600 metres, covering 200,000 km2 between the Western and Eastern Cordilleras which are 6500 m high (Fig. 1). From north to south, three major lacustrine areas occupy this high plateau: 2 - Lake Titicaca at 3809 metres above sea level, covering 8562 km ; 2 - Lake Poopo at 3686 m.a.s.l. covering 2530 km ; - Coipasa-Uyuni, a group of dry salt lakes, covering 11 ,000 km2 at 3653 m.a.s.l. Over the last 1.8 million years these basins have registered episodes of greatly enlarged lake areas. According to Lavenu et al. (1984) and to Servant and Fontes (1978, 1984), the Pleistocene record of Titicaca lake level fluctu ations can be summarised as follows: - during the Early Pleistocene the paleolake Mataro rose with a water level established at 140 metres above the present level. This stage is related to the end of the Calvario glaciation (Servant, 1977) and the corresponding deposits are recognisable mainly at the NW edge of the basin; - the paleolake Cabana occurred during the middle Pleistocene with a water level established at 90 metres above the present Lake Titicaca level: the associated sediments are present on the eastern and western shores of the basin; - then with the retreat of the Sorata glaciation (Servant, 1977) the Ballivian stage occurred with

WARD*, R. THORNTON, J. CESTA Dept. of Geology, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH 45221 USA ABSTRACT. Here we review published cosmogenic records of glaciation and deglaciation from the western cordillera of the arid subtropical Andes of northern Chile and southwest Bolivia. Specifically, we examine seven published studies describing exposure ages from moraines and glaciated bedrock spanning the glaciological Arid Diagonal, the region of the dry Andes where there is no clear evidence for glaciation over at least the last global glaciation. We also present new cosmogenic 36Cl exposure ages from two previously undated sets of moraines in the deglaciated region near 22ºS. Taken together, these records indicate that the most extensive regional glaciation occurred ca. 35-45 ka, followed by slow, punctuated retreat through the global last glacial maximum, and rapid retreat after ~15-17 ka. In the vicinity of the large Altiplanic lakes that existed during the late glacial stage, the 15-17 ka moraines overrode the earlier moraines, whereas elsewhere regionally, on both sides of the Arid Diagonal, late glacial wet periods are represented only by less-prominent moraines in more retracted positions.
