Bikash Bhattacharjee is one of ’s most widely acclaimed artists and painters. He was a realist in technique who used the traditions of Titian and Velasquez in unexpected, often highly symbolic, unsettling and surrealistic ways. As the critic Manasij Majumder writes, Bhattacharjee “accepted the challenge of transforming his consummate skill to evoke the subtleties of surface realism into a pliant tool of creativity without dismantling the received art forms.” Bhattacharjee began showing his work in 1965, and was the subject of dozens of solo exhibitions and dozens more group shows worldwide. He received numerous awards along the way, by institutions including the Academy of Fine Art, , in 1962; the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, in 1971, and the in New Delhi, which bestowed on him its National Award in 1971 and 1972. In 1988 he was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards given by the Indian government. The artist passed away in 2006.

WALL & ELEPHANT Executed in 2006. Acrylic on canvas Unframed. 50 x 40 in. . Valuation: $3,500 USD Asking Price: $1,750 USD Partha Shaw is a painter who schooled in Santiniketan— a place steeped in artistic tradition and history, generated by masters like and the Tagores, and enhanced by modern and contemporary artists like K.G. Subramanyan, and Dharmanarayan Dasgupta. It was in Santiniketan that Partha Shaw developed his imagination and creative vision. But even though Shaw had this rich and overflowing background to borrow from, he like most of the other artists there, decided to create a style of his own and add to the heritage he learnt of, rather than make use of it. Here, he could also closely study nature and the works of the great Indian masters. Taking off from the unique Indian miniature, Shaw gave shape to his personal vocabulary of artistic expression, which is characteristically Indian and at the same time is loaded with modernity.

FIGURE ON ENVELOPE Executed in 1990. Ink on paper. 9 x 5 in. Valuation: $700 USD Asking Price: $350 USD

Akbar Padamsee: Though widely spoken of as a modernist, Padamsee continues to resist easy categorization. Throughout his illustrious career spanning six decades, he has remained fiercely experimental and individualistic. Renouncing the rich colour palette of his early years, he chose to paint in grey between the years 1959 — 1960 stating, “Grey is without prejudice; it does not discriminate between object and space”. These monumental works have been widely recognized for their rich and poetic quality. In 1952, Padamsee was awarded a prize by Andre Breton, known as the pope of surrealism, on behalf of the Journale d’art. His very first solo show was in J ehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai in 1954, where these early works were shown. In 1962, he was awarded a gold medal from the Lalit Kala Akademi, and in 1965 a fellowship from the J.D. Rockefeller Foundation. Art has been donated by an anonymous donor. All proceeds will go to AIF. Shipping cost to be borne by the buyer. To inquire please contact: [email protected]. Art will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
