He received numerous awards along the way, by institutions including the Academy of Fine Art, Kolkata, in 1962; the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, in 1971, and the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi, which bestowed on him its National Award in 1971 and 1972. Valuation: $3,500 USD Asking Price: $1,750 USD Partha Shaw is a painter who schooled in Santiniketan— a place steeped in artistic tradition and history, generated by masters like Nandalal Bose and the Tagores, and enhanced by modern and contemporary artists like K.G. Subramanyan, Sunil Das and Dharmanarayan Dasgupta. It was in Santiniketan that Partha Shaw developed his imagination and creative vision. But even though Shaw had this rich and overflowing background to borrow from, he like most of the other artists there, decided to create a style of his own and add to the heritage he learnt of, rather than make use of it. Here, he could also closely study nature and the works of the great Indian masters. Taking off from the unique Indian miniature, Shaw gave shape to his personal vocabulary of artistic expression, which is characteristically Indian and at the same time is loaded with modernity. • Contemporary Art of India from the Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection June 22 - September 17, 2000
Haggerty Museum of Art u Marquette University Timeless Visions Contemporary Art of India from the Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection June 22 - September 17, 2000 The exhibition Timeless Visions cele- brates the modern and contemporary work of thirteen artists from India. As a group, these artists have probed such profound themes as the nature of cre- ation and representations of the divine, the essence of being human, the charac- ter of the heroic, and such formal con- cerns as color, form and space. As a country India, which gained inde- pendence from British rule in 1947, Jamini Roy, Untitled, undated ranks second after China in terms of Tempera on newspaper, 103/4 x 163/4 in. In Hinduism, cattle are sacred and revered. population and is home to the world’s largest film industry. While collections of the traditional arts of India such as Hindu and Buddhist temple sculpture and Indian miniatures are well established in museums throughout the world, the importance of the art of post-colonial India has only recently begun to be recognized. Contemporary Indian art represents a radical break from the past because Indian artists are no longer subordi- nate to patrons or trained solely as apprentices in established styles. Color, form, texture and line once deployed only for narrative purposes sometimes take precedence—or become—the content. Four of the artists represented in this exhibition (Dave, Goud, Reddy and Rodwittiya) were trained at the newly established fine arts department at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda. This program is not limited to traditional European or Indian approaches to art, but was designed to be international in its scope and training.

  • Paresh Maity
O N L I N E TRUNK SHOW 16 September -15 October 2020 A Capsule Collection of 9 Artworks PARESH MAITY Hope Paresh Maity has returned, in his recent series of nine aquarelles, titled ‘Hope’, to an early and memorable phase of his career when he produced lambent waterscapes redolent of Bengal’s Ganga delta. Dominated by dramatically illuminated skies, his recent waterscapes are punctuated by occasional sailboats, isolated signs of the human presence in nature’s grand theatre of wind, cloud, and wave. These scenes, reminiscent of fraught moments of pause or passage in the cinema of Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak, stir us deeply. Maity presents the clouds as dunes and the overcast sky as an upward tilting beach. Or might the sky be a tide coming in, dissolving the horizon? The moody sea shimmers past dreaming trees or surges up in mountains of water. Against storm and current, the sailboats hold out, vulnerable yet defiant. Ranjit Hoskote Hope - 1 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 2 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 3 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 4 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 5 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 6 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 7 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 8 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Hope - 9 watercolour on paper 12” x 12”, 2020 Paresh Maity (born Tamluk, 1965) is strongly associated with his paintings, rendered in a distinctive palette of shadowed yellows, vivid greens and burnished brown tones.
