Page 16 Anishinabek News September 2006 Ezhoosgaged/Arts Hiawatha seen by Anishinaabe eyes GARDEN RIVER FN – From 1900 until 1967 the Garden River First Nation collaborated with local entrepreneurs from the Sault Star and the Canadian Pacifi c Railway to mount a stage performance of Longfellow’s epic poem ”The Song of Hiawatha.” The play became an international sensation and toured major cities in Canada, the United States, Europe and England. In August, the community invited Alanis King – playwright in resi- dence at the Indigenous Theatre School in Toronto – and Floyd Favel – from CBC Radio’s “Dead Dog Café” – to work with 12 youth from the Garden River and Rankin First Nations to re-write Longfellow’s original epic – exploring this legacy for a new generation. They staged three 45-minute performances of the new interpretation of “The Song of Hi- awatha,” as seen from the Anishinaabe perspective. King and Favel have explored the original mythology and history on which Longfellow based his epic in order to highlight the major themes to be addressed in a contemporary version of Hiawatha. Research suggests the main stories in the poem come from the An- ishinaabe tradition and that Longfellow incorporated the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) name ‘Hiawatha’ for the work to be more accessible to a white audience. It was a very hard sell to get the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) to accept this concept. One student was a Native from Peru, who completed his fi rst-year apprenticeship this past spring. In nine years, we have trained over 500 people with about 50 apprentices. ASK HOLLY Rabbit and Bear Paws BY HOLLY BRODHAGEN We can agree to disagree I have noticed an interesting phenom- enon since I started writing for the Anishinabek News – reporters or col- umnists spend a lot of time justifying their work. My short monthly column doesn’t deal with hard-hitting facts, but even I have to defend my opinions. There are those who like my col- umn, people who think it is just fi lling space, and, yes, some who disagree with what I write. I thank the fi rst group for their encouragement, accept the second group’s opinions and sit down for a talk with the third group. I enjoy debating with someone who has a different opinion than me. I of- ten encourage them to write a letter to the editor if they really disagree with me. In a free country people should be encouraged to express and defend their own opinions. By defending your opin- ion, you might be able to change some- one else’s mind – or they might be able to change yours. I am encouraged when someone doesn’t like what is written and is will- ing to say so. Too often people accept what the media publishes without ques- tioning the source or the bias. We need to remember that mass media – news- papers, radio, television – are business- es, and operate to make money. When I started writing my editor encouraged me to write articles that provided interesting information in a way that attracted the attention of read- ers. What I didn’t know at the time was how carefully you have to choose your words to ensure that my articles provide the information and the tone I intend to get across. Sometimes I have had to re-write articles because their tone implied the opposite of what I intended to say. Writers need to keep their audience in mind, as well as their editor.
