The CLI is an evaluated inventory of all landscapes having historical significance that are listed on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, or are otherwise managed as cultural resources through a public planning process and in which the NPS has or plans to acquire any legal interest. The CLI identifies and documents each landscape’s location, size, physical development, condition, landscape characteristics, character-defining features, as well as other valuable information useful to park management. Cultural landscapes become approved CLIs when concurrence with the findings is obtained from the park superintendent and all required data fields are entered into a national database. In addition,

A Toast To the Swamp by Karen Patterson As the accompanying article Water Quality Standards Set for Great Swamp, reports (see page 2), the first-ever standards for nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment levels in the five tributaries of the Great Swamp have been established. This is good news indeed, as it gives us all something to measure future water quality data against, and something to work for: the protection and maintenance of water quality in the Passaic River and Primrose Brook; and the restoration of Great, Loantaka and Black Brooks so that they meet the individual standards set for those streams. But just what is the problem with nutrients in our streams? They aren’t the typical “pollutants” we generally think of as threatening human health, such as lead, mercury, Volatile Organic Compounds, coliform bacteria and others.     An Assessment of Impacts of Rolling Knoll Landfill on Nearby Yater Resources Project Proposal By Mark A. Hardy and Jean C. Lewis SUMMARY The Rolling Knoll Landfill operated in the northeastern part of the Great · -Swamp in Morris County, NJ from the 1930' s to 1968. Materials dumped at the landfill included domestic wastes, pharmaceuticals, and possibly some industrial wastes. Approximately 30 acres of the 140-acre landfill are currently within the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The USFWS is legally required to monitor ground­ water quality around the landfill by a New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination (NJPDES) permit. However, the USFWS is also interested in determining how the landfill might impact the wetland that they manage. This project will obtain data to help define the general geohydrology of :the Great Swamp around the landfill, install observation wells in appropriate locations on USFWS managed land, monitor ground-water and (or) surface-water quality, and generally examine surface-water quality and ground-water interaction with Loantaka Brook. Work will be accomplished by (1) performing a reconnaissance of water quality and water levels for surface water and shallow ground water around the landfill and in Loantaka Brook; (2) evaluating the chemistry of stream-bottom material in Loantaka Brook; (3) surveying electromagnetic conductivity variation around the landfill; (4) drilling and logging boreholes at several locations around the landfill and installing wells at selected boreholes; ant (5) collecting and evaluating chemical data and water-level data from observation wells and (or) surface water around the landfill.

It is important to note that this plan will require several updates. Chatham Township must reexamine the Stormwater Management Plan at each reexamination of the Township’s Master Plan in accordance with N.J.S.A 40:55-D89. 1.1 How Does Stormwater Runoff Affect Us? Stormwater runoff is one Figure 1 of the largest detrimental impacts to our nation’s water resources and is a major component of non- point source pollution. It is estimated that up to 60 percent of existing water pollution problems are attributable to non-point source pollution. Non- point source pollution, and particularly, stormwater runoff is difficult to identify, control, and treat.
