KITCHEN DESIGN ADDS TO THE RISE OF LUXURY HIGH-RISES The construction boom continues. Through the first four months of 2015, total construction starts* were $208.2 billion, up 24 percent from the same period a year ago. Not coincidentally a flurry of new luxury residential high-rise buildings are popping up to meet the nation’s obsession with great design. One57 has been one of the most anticipated luxury developments in the world; Portland, Oregon, is home to the minimalist and modern Cosmopolitan on the Park; and Honolulu boasts the sprawling oceanside community of Ward Village. These towers are shining examples of the power that architecture and interior design can play in changing the skyline of U.S. , from coast to coast— and beyond.

Each of these buildings is structurally impressive inside and out, designed by today’s most renowned architects and interior designers, who are combining their talents to create modern yet comfortable living spaces. The common denominator? State-of- the-art, highly stylized kitchens that are paragons of beautiful form and astonishing function.

With custom cabinetry in striking Macassar ebony and Miele appliances, the kitchens in One57 are design-forward. New York’s One57, situated on ’s exclusive corridor, directly north of and overlooking , was envisioned by Atelier Christian de Portzamparc with interiors by Thomas Juul-Hansen. “We set out to create a residential experience unlike anything else in New York , collaborating with craftsmen of impeccable taste and discernment,” said Victor Druga, Vice President of Design at Extell Development Company. “Our selective process ensured that every residence at One57 is among the best ever designed, featuring expansive spaces, the most dynamic views of Central Park, and custom detailing.” It’s these details that make the difference, especially in the kitchens. Handcrafted custom cabinetry, unique design elements from Juul-Hansen, and technologically advanced appliances by Miele create a dazzling culinary environment. From stainless-steel wall ovens and 30" warming drawers to 24" fully integrated dishwashers and gas cooktops, Miele delivers unparalleled quality and sleek, stylish design.

This luminous white-on-white palette represents the ultimate in modernist simplicity, complemented by Miele appliances.

In Portland, Oregon, an urban renaissance has taken place, with the revitalization of the Pearl District. Abandoned warehouses and rail yards that spotted the area’s landscape just 20 years ago have given rise to an architecturally significant residential community with galleries, restaurants, shops, and parks. At the heart is the Cosmopolitan on the Park, a 150-residence luxury tower and the tallest building in town at 28 levels. Designed by BOORA Architects, Inc. and developed by Hoyt Street Properties, the Cosmopolitan’s design emphasizes the height and slim proportion of the tower with a series of strong vertical elements, giving rise to amazing views in every direction. “As the majority of the residences are corner units with lots of glass and an open plan, the kitchens afford expansive views to the city, bridges, and landscape beyond,” said Brad Demby of BOORA. Visible from both the dining and living rooms, the kitchens had to be beautiful. “They are designed with high-quality materials and appliances that integrate seamlessly into a very functional and elegant system,” said Demby. The kitchens are outfitted with innovative Miele appliances. With dishwashers that are as sophisticated as the new range series, the appliances perfectly complement the overall design aesthetic.

The blurred lines between indoors and out assist in making the Miele kitchen a place to behold.

For Ward Village, a 60-acre coastal master-planned community located in Honolulu, architect James Cheng’s vision was to create a vibrant neighborhood that took into account the cultural history of the area while giving residents the best modern amenities and aesthetic design. “People in high-end residential buildings all ask the same things. Do I have a big enough closet? Do I have a great kitchen? Do I have all the appliances?” said Cheng. To that end, interior designer Tony Ingrao incorporated a complete suite of Miele appliances, ranging from culinary to cleaning to cooling products, into the two mixed-use towers, Waiea and Anaha. The Miele appliances balance nicely with the polished-quartz composite counter tops and European cabinetry, accomplishing a seamless and innovative kitchen design. By incorporating Miele, Ward Village exceeds exceptional luxury with world-class amenities for each resident.
