1 Savidya Upasamiti: 2012-13 Project Renewal SAVIDYA UPASAMITI 2012 – 13 PROJECT RENEWAL PROPOSAL Kalyan Ghatak & Ravi Rajagopalan 18th Apr 2012 1 Introduction Project Overview 4 The Savidya Upasmiti project seeks to improve the quality of school education in the Champawat region of Uttarakhand by improving the resources in the public schools, and by increasing awareness in the local community regarding the importance of education and the people’s right to quality education. The project is managed and run by the Himalaya Water Service Tatha Vikas Avam Paryavaran Sanrakshan Samiti (HWSTVAPSS) and has been funded by the Silicon Valley chapter of Asha For Education (Asha-SV) since the project’s inception in 2005. The following slides contain: A report of the project activities during 2011-12, and A proposal to continue funding the project during 2012-13. Savidya Upasamiti: 2012-13 Project Renewal 18 April 2012 Project History 5 The Savidya-Upasamiti project started as a Support-A-School project in 2005-06. Funds were provided to augment the resources in a Primary School in Kulethi, Champawat. These include appointment of additional teachers, improvement of school infrastructure, distribution of school uniforms and study kits to the students, etc. By 2007-08, the project had expanded to support 6 schools. Adjacent programs, such as teacher training workshops and vocational training, were introduced to enhance the impact of the Support-A-School program. By 2010-11, Savidya had eliminated the less effective project components and stopped supporting schools that did not perform as per expectations. As of 2011-12, the project supports 7 schools, and includes experiential learning programs, teacher training workshops and community outreach efforts.

Gender, Genre, and the Idea of Indian Literature: The Short Story in Hindi and Tamil, 1950-1970 by Preetha Laxmi Mani A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in South and Southeast Asian Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Vasudha Dalmia, Co-Chair Professor George Hart, Co-Chair Professor Paola Bacchetta Professor Raka Ray Spring 2012 Abstract Gender, Genre, and the Idea of Indian Literature: The Short Story in Hindi and Tamil, 1950-1970 by Preetha Laxmi Mani Doctor of Philosophy in South and Southeast Asian Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Professor Vasudha Dalmia, Co-Chair Professor George Hart, Co-Chair In the wake of Indian Independence, the short story emerged as the most active genre in both Hindi and Tamil literature, establishing new representations of selfhood and citizenship that would shape popular expression across India for decades to come. This is evidenced by increased circulation of short stories in post-Independence magazines and their continued study as part of the Hindi and Tamil literary canons. These short stories thus provide an important window into the cultural production of enduring paradigms of Indian modernity and citizenship in the context of national efforts to create an all-Indian identity after decolonization. My dissertation is motivated by an interest in explaining how post-Independence Hindi and Tamil short stories mobilize and construct representations of the “Indian citizen,” locating them within a regionally specific cultural context, as well as the broader imaginings of a modern India.

But this was a race only for the specially abled children, each one with their own set of challenges and abilities. As the race began, one of them sprinted out of the blocks, only to realise midway that each one of them was labouring hard to finish the distance in their own unique ways. In between one of them stumbled. Between the boy leading the race and the others in the fray, there was an exchange of glances, and it was clear. What was clear? They had to pick up the crestfallen grounded boy and, hand in hand, all of them ambled to the finish line. No one won. Yet, all of them emerged victors. Sometimes we need to overcome the fight deep within ourselves and cross the self-hurdles ignoring the rat race.
