This year’s Annual Waikiki Improvement Association Membership Meeting was hosted at the Pink Palace of the Pacific, The Royal Hawaiian on October 30, 2018. President Rick Egged presented The Four Pillars of WIA, who’s objective is, “to improve, enrich and beautify Waikiki for the benefit of residents and visitors alike ,and to promote the conditions conducive to the economic and cultural good and for the betterment of the entire community.” He shared plans for Waikiki, including current designs to replace the Royal Hawaiian Groin and other projects that are important to improving Waikiki and making it better for our visitors and residents.

Jason Ito of the Kyo-ya Management Company, Chair of the WIA Board of Directors, conducted the business portion and election of three new board directors: Ulrich Krauer of Halekulani, Julie Plant of the Honolulu Cookie Company and Jarrett Walters of Hawaiian Building Maintenance.

The highlights of the evening were the presenting of the Annual Ho’o wehiwehi Awards. The beautiful beach frontage of the luxurious hotel was the perfect setting to host the Awards, that since 2001 has recognized projects and programs that enhance Waikiki …. to adorn, decorate or beautify.

This year, the master of ceremonies for the 2018 Ho`owehiwehi Awards was Mr. Joe Teipel aka Waikikiʻs own SURFER JOE! He thanked the awards sponsors, The Laylow Waikiki, the Honolulu Marathon, and SP Parking.

IV. “THE DR. GEORGE S. KANAHELE AWARD” recognizes historian Dr. George S. Kanahele, who was the driving force to restore a sense of "Hawaiianness" to Waikīkī. He founded the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association. In keeping with his legacy, the award is given to a person, project or place that best represents the values of aloha and ho`okipa (hospitality) embodied in his life work. Two awards were presented this year, honoring Dr. Kanahale:

HAWAII TOURISIM AUTHORITY (HTA). Kalani L. Ka’ana’ana, Director of Hawaiian Cultural Affairs, accepted for HTA which supports programs that perpetuate and promote the uniqueness and integrity of the Native Hawaiian culture and community and their significance in differentiating the destination through unique and genuine visitor experiences. HYATT REGENCY WAIKIKI BEACH RESORT & SPA The Hyatt Regency embraced new initiatives into their Hawaiian programming that kept true to the name Hoʻokela - to excel in presenting an unforgettable Hawaiian experience to both kamaʻāina and malihini alike. Ku`uipo Kumukahi Hyatt’s Culture Director reminds us all that nothing happens without the alignment of aloha and the ʻāina .
