Welcome
Dear Colleagues,
We are very pleased to welcome you to the 36th annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education, the leading scholarly society composed of professors, policy makers, administrators, and others who study and research higher education. We received a record number of proposals submitted this year- a total of 1,043! At the time of this writing, our registration is over 1,000, putting us on track to break our current record for attendance. Our association continues to grow, something of which we can all be proud. The conference this year includes over 450 research and scholarly papers, symposia, roundtables, and posters in our general conference, as well as four pre-conferences, sessions specifically designed for graduate students, and much, much more!
Our conference theme this year is: Higher Education: Meeting the Challenge of a Changing Future. Given the current economic and policy milieu, this theme seems particularly appropriate. Through this focus, we seek to engage the ASHE community in reflecting on the future and its effect on our profession. According to Joel Kotkin (2010) in the book “The Next Hundred Million: America in 2050” we are heading into an era of deep and probably difficult change. A major report by the National Intelligence Council entitled “Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World,”(2008) forecasts that higher education will play a major role in shaping the global landscape of 2025. And indeed, the predictions are that the US will position itself as a world education hub and that the demand for higher education will increase.
Toward this end, as well as to address current issues that face us, we have organized a series of Presidential Sessions featuring the following topics: s ;2ADICALLY= 2ETHINKING (IGHER %DUCATION IN THE 53 s #OLLEGEOLOGY 'AMES 4ECHNOLOGY AND /NLINE ,EARNING IN THE ST #ENTURY s 4HEORIZING )NTERNATIONAL AND #OMPARATIVE (IGHER %DUCATION IN THE ST #ENTURY s (OW DO #OMMUNITY #OLLEGES -EASURE 3UCCESS s #HALLENGES &ACING
