BENEFICE MAGAZINE – April 2017

Edition for the Parishes of Herriard with Winslade, Tunworth, Upton Grey and Weston Patrick

As I type I’m looking at a beautiful bunch of yellow daffodils and white tulips in a jam jar wrapped in blue tissue paper, and to boot the sun is shining through the window behind me and feels really quite warm on my back. Can spring be around the corner? I just love this season of new life, fresh growth and the promise of long days to come. The flowers were given to me at the end of a baptism on Sunday. Although traditionally we don’t have flowers in church during Lent, the 40 days when Jesus was in the desert being tempted by the devil, we saw no harm in allowing these lovely little signs of spring and new life for our family service. After all, a new life being welcomed into fellowship with Christ is what baptism is all about. Most of us were baptised as babies, of course, and it was our parents and godparents who committed to the baptismal promises on our behalf. For our Lent Course this year we’re thinking about a different one of those promises each week. Lent is a period when Christians take time out to reflect on their relationship with God as we prepare for Easter – it isn’t only about giving up chocolate and wine! – and it’s no bad thing to think afresh about these baptismal promises now that we’re adults. In baptism, we’re called out of darkness and into God’s marvellous light. A lighted candle is given to the child (via a parent!) to represent the light of Christ and we all pray that the child will walk in this light throughout life and shine as a light in the world. As you might expect, this doesn’t come out of nowhere. At Christmas we probably all heard the reading from St John’s Gospel that describes the birth of Jesus. John called Jesus the Word of God made flesh, coming to live with us. He also spoke about the Light that enlightens everyone coming into the world, a light that shines in the darkness, and that cannot be extinguished. When Jesus was preaching, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’ (John 8:12). Leading up to Good Friday people tried very hard to extinguish that light. At one point it even looked as though they’d succeeded, as darkness covered the earth and Jesus died on the cross. But as we light our Easter (or Paschal) candle on Easter Sunday we proclaim his resurrection. Jesus is alive, and is the light for all people. 2

Jesus also said, ‘You are the light of the world .... let your light shine before others ...’ (Matthew 5:14, 16). As we reflect on our baptismal promises this Lent, perhaps we can also reflect on how we can shine as the light of Christ in the communities in which we live. May we be a light to one another. Revd Linda Scard

Other Dates for the Diary  On 7th May our Benefice will be holding a Licensing service for Mary-Beth Hawrish at 3pm at St Andrew’s . Everyone is invited to come along and welcome Mary-Beth to her new post as the vicar of Long Sutton and South Warnborough.  On 21st May, Tunworth (10am), Herriard and Weston Patrick (both at 11am) will be holding Rogation walks. Rogation Day walks go back to early medieval times when the priest and people walked the bounds of the parish to pray for the farmers, who worked on the land, and their crops. So, do come and join us as it is fun and relaxed. Please meet at the respective churches and all walks end with some refreshments. At Upton Grey, we will be holding a Family Service at the usual 9.45am.  Ascension Day is the Thursday 25th May and there is a Holy Communion service for the whole benefice at 7.30pm at St Andrew’s, South Warnborough – a lovely opportunity for parishioners from around the benefice to meet Mary-Beth.  Upton Grey Café Church – new time from May. Having experimented with our 4th Sunday café church service starting at 11am, we have decided from May onwards to revert back to an earlier starting time in order to be consistent with other services at Upton Grey, so café church will start at 9.45 am from 28th May. Café church is a great chance to get together in an informal setting for a cup of coffee, croissant and some time to chew over life’s big questions.  Upton Grey Church Fete – 2pm 10th June. This year the Upton Grey fete will be held at 2pm on Saturday 10th June and David & Sue Scott have kindly agreed to host it. As the relatively new vicar of Upton Grey, this will be our first experience of the Upton Grey Church Fete. It would be wonderful to see you all there - and even more wonderful if you could spend lots at the stalls to raise money for St Mary’s church. Simon.  Herriard Fete. Herriard will hold the Herriard Fete on 18th June on Herriard Green.  Herriard Thursday Holy Communion Service. The next 10.00am Thursday Holy Communion service in Herriard will be on 20th April. All are welcome to this informal, friendly and relaxed service, which is followed by refreshments. 5

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES

Local Police Report “Dear Residents, I am pleased to report no major crimes having been reported over the past few weeks. I also wish to thank all the residents who came to the recent open meeting organised by the Herriard Parish Council held at the British Legion on February 27th. In consequence of that meeting Inspector Hughes from the Traffic Department also wishes to thank those for attending and will continue to deal with the Parish Council. 7

It was apparent that some calls made to 101 went to the local Council and not the Police, as such to clarify, if a call is made to 101 the caller will need to state what their complaint is, i.e. noise or speed / driving issues, if it is a noise complaint the call will be sent to the Borough or County Council as an environment issue. If it is speed or other driving related incident, then it will go to the Police, if you call the Police please ask the operator to link the call with RMS 44170097121, this is a file that I have established on our systems so we aware of calls received and the nature of the complaints in order to arrange for suitable policing to take place. With the increase in 'cyber-crime', may I please make you aware of some general basic advice regarding computer fraud and security. Banks and card issuers will never contact you by email to ask for personal or financial details. Never respond to such a message – report to your bank. • Any emails from unknown sources should be deleted without opening. Do not open any attachments. • To report a fraud or online crime contact Action Fraud. • If actions or words are illegal in the ‘real’ world it will be illegal online. • Just because it has been said online or in a text it doesn’t mean you are beyond the law. Saying anything in hate, harassing or threatening could land you in serious trouble with the police and could result in a criminal record. • When applying for a job, employers will often look at social media profiles to check their suitability • Always use legitimate sites when downloading i.e. music, films etc. • Ensure you have anti-virus software installed onto your computer and it is up to date. • Install anti-spyware software and always use a firewall. • If you have a wireless network make sure that you password protect it. You can change the user name and password for home hubs to increase your online security. • Use a strong password. To make it easy to remember, think of a phrase including letters and numbers such as the first line of your address and remove all of the vowels. You could use the same phrase for every website by adding the first and last letter of the website to the beginning and end of your password respectively. • Always ensure you update all Apps and operating systems on all internet enabled devices – software producers often send out updates or ‘patches’. These are critical for protecting your machines security and online safety. Many thanks as always” Andrew REID, Local Constable. Police Constable 3746, Rural Beat Officer, Police Office, . Massive Increase in Fly-Tipping in our villages Unfortunately, there has been a massive increase in fly-tipping in the area over the past few months. Two recent major cases were overnight / early morning Saturday March 18th a huge number of fridges and roofing felt were dumped presumably by trailer, lorry or horsebox within the grounds a private house as below that had just been sold causing criminal damage to the garage doors and is of course trespass. See below:

Additionally, a further very bad case actually blocked the road from to Tunworth on Sunday 19th and the morning of Monday 20th March. If you have any information on the above incidents and for all new cases, these should be logged with the police PC Reid, on 01256:389050 HQ: 101 or Mob: 07768:776844. If on the public highway, the Council has to pay to remove, so please phone B&DBC on 01256 844844. If on private land, it is the landowner (the victim!) who has to pay for the fly-tipping to be removed. This appears to be partly due to increased costs and increased inconvenience (e.g.; intro of permits, reduced locations and timings) to dispose of larger items and lack of prosecution of offenders.

9

This menace is spoiling our beautiful environment and costing huge amounts of money to clear; so please lobby MPS, Local Councillors (B&DC and HCC) and the Police to take policy action - and perhaps encourage greater fines and prison sentences for the worst cases. Please take this seriously – the next fly-tip could literally be on your front lawn next - like the unfortunate home above!!!

The North Hampshire Downs Villages Benefice Annual Quiz South Warnborough and Long Sutton came joint top in the recent North Hampshire Downs Benefice Quiz Night. The South Warnborough Team were defending the title that they had won on the last two occasions so were happy to concede the magnificent trophy to the Long Sutton Team who will now have the honour of hosting the next Quiz Night. The event was very well supported by all the parishes in the Benefice and our thanks go to Lewis and Linda Scard and Sian Taylor for their help in organising the event which was held in the newly re-ordered Odiham Parish Church. In particular, our thanks go to Lewis for compiling and presenting the quiz, and to Linda and Sian for marking the answers and keeping the score. An enjoyable evening was had by all and we look forward to the next Benefice Quiz Night.

Educational Grants available to ALL our local parishes’ residents When the Upton Grey School was sold after its closure in the 1980s, half of the proceeds went to the village and the Upton Grey Educational Trust was formed. The income from the sale proceeds, invested by the charity, can be used twice yearly “for the advancement of education”. The Trust meets in June and December each year to consider applications for assistance with educational needs, from any age group and with no means testing. Since the Trust was set up, it has awarded grants to over 85 applicants and 15 groups in addition to Long Sutton School. For more info on how to apply and terms and conditions, please visit www.uptongreychurch.info (under Groups & Organisations) or email [email protected]. This is primarily open to residents of Upton Grey, but consideration may also be given to applicants from other parishes within the Benefice – funds permitting. We are very lucky to have this fund and very grateful to the late Ros Mills for establishing it. Funds are available and the Trust would warmly welcome any new individual applications - so why not apply! Please submit your application in writing before the end of May 2017 to: The Secretary to the Trustees, UPTON GREY EDUCATIONAL TRUST, Clock Cottage, Cleves Lane, Upton Grey, Basingstoke RG25 2RG or via email to: [email protected]. Rural Transport Questionnaire for Public Transport Needs A questionnaire to Herriard villagers and other potential users of local public transport was sent out as a flyer to the Parish Magazine in March. The Survey Monkey weblink is: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Z2M5JTC Whilst the deadline is 31st March – we can extend that until Monday 10th April 2017 to give more people a chance to complete it. So far, we have had over 50 replies, which is a good response rate – but we need more! So please encourage other members of your family or friends who may use a bus to/from Herriard and The Avenue. “Rural bus services across the country have been significantly cut back in recent years as local government subsidies to operators have been withdrawn. Herriard is a case in point. Herriard Parish Council has undertaken to quantify and calculate the demand numerically for public (or voluntary) transport. 14

Completed forms should be returned to Cllr. Gemma Hounsell (details on the questionnaire). Thankyou”. Please contact Ian [email protected] if you don’t receive a copy or need additional copies.

Full details in May’s magazine or from Barbara or Kay on 01256 381301. Ed Ian’s Note: I’m sure everyone will join me in wishing Barbara a speedy and full recovery after her serious accident in January - and wish to thank Barbara and Kay for opening their garden again this year.

Herriard Gardening Club From a large unruly plot of land that was growing only ground elder and couch grass, to a series of raised beds with a greenhouse and shed, the girls (and boys) have worked so hard to get the allotment up and running! Talk about team work! We hope to have an official opening day for everyone who is interested to see what we have been doing, to be announced! For details of our meetings, please call me on 01256381053. 10 Top Gardening Tips for April 1. Cut back Spring flowering shrubs when they have finished flowering. 2. Plant potatoes in well prepared soil. A trench filled with straw, grass clippings and even newspaper really helps to give them a good start! 3. Time to sow hardy annuals, herbs and Wild flowers seed outdoors. 4. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser to beds e.g.; chicken manure pellets. 5. Put supports in for perennials before they get to large. 6. Last chance to plant bare root fruit trees. 7. Plant onions, shallots and garlic sets. 8. Sow seed outdoors if weather allows, of broad beans, carrots, salad leaves, spinach, chard, peas, beetroot and radish. 9. Protect young plants from slugs! 10. Weed and feed lawns with a good quality combined mixture and continue to mow regularly for a beautiful lawn! Enjoy the beautiful Spring weather in your garden, Gill Venning (Rhs Dip.) Alton Fringe Theatre presents TS Eliot: ‘The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock’ and ‘The Waste land’ Thursday 6 April Two poems on Thursday 6th April from 7.30pm – 9pm; tickets £7.50. This is a rare opportunity to hear two of the 20th century’s most famous poems read aloud for an audience by kind permission of the Eliot Estate and his publishers, Faber and Faber. ‘The Love Song’ published in 1915 points the way to the more controversial poem, ‘The Waste Land’ (1922.) The latter reflects Eliot’s experience of a fragmented, urban world in the aftermath of the First World War. ‘The Love Song’ will be performed as a monologue and then five actors will give voice to the many characters, ideas and sounds of the ‘The Waste Land.’ The readings will be followed by an informal discussion. Refreshments available all evening and performance at Basingstoke Discovery Centre, details below. www.altonfringe.com. 18

Fundraising for Zack from Herriard Zacky is from Herriard. “Like every 4-year-old, Zacky deserves to have the opportunity to be in the right learning environment to thrive and develop in the best way possible. Zacky was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition (KCNQ2), which requires very specialised support to meet all of his educational, therapeutic and care needs, such as specialist therapies and direct access to on site care facilities. Zacky faces everyday life with a number of complex conditions:  Visual impairment  Epilepsy  Learning disability  Generalised dystonia (muscle spasms)  He is unable to talk  He is unable to feed orally and so is tube fed  He is unable to walk Unfortunately, there is a lengthy, costly and complex process that we have to go through for Zacky to be assessed correctly. The money we raise will enable us to get independent reports from:  Occupational therapist  Physiotherapist  Speech and language therapist  Educational Psychologist  Plus, independent legal representation to present Zacky’s case This will go towards helping us to make sure Zacky’s future is in the absolute best hands at such a critical time. If you would like to get involved in a fund-raising event, please get in touch so we can support in any way we can”. www.facebook.com/zackydaretodream/. For more on 19

Andy Comley, South Warnborough Ridley Hall on Sat 20th May Singer-songwriter Andy Comley has moved out of the usual venues and headed back to his roots, by embarking on a tour of rural halls. Having played on three continents and supported some of the UK’s top singer- songwriters such as Boo Hewerdine (Eddie Reader), Emily Barker, and Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran), “I believe in community, and arts provision for all, and I understand that the local hall can be an important place for people to meet and create social ties,” said the 47-year-old, who grew up in the sleepy Hampshire village of Owslebury. Often likened to Neil Young, Andy has been called passionate and a poet, and of his last album, Verity Sharpe (Radio 3’s Late Junction) said “I love it”. Andy will be playing with double bassist Dave Bulbeck at South Warnborough Ridley Hall, nr. Alton on Saturday 20th May 2017. Doors open at 19:00 for 19:45 start. Advance tickets only. £10 online at www.andycomley.com.
