NEOPLATONIZING GNOSTICISM AND GNOSTICIZING NEOPLATONISM IN THE “AMERICAN BAROQUE” Jay Bregman Hilary Armstrong gave the Gnostics a fair hearing in his “Dualism: Platonic, Gnostic, and Christian.”1 He basically viewed Gnosticism as having some points of contact with Platonism, but since they were not doing the same thing as philosophers, he reasoned, it would be wrong to treat them as “bad philosophers.” Although Gnostic anti-cosmism is balanced by his nuanced view of certain Gnostic pro-cosmic ideas, Gnostics are “mythicizers,” hence doing something very different from philosophers since, in the last analysis, they think that the cosmos is at best transitory—a place to flee from. However, in the last decade or so, there has been a reconsideration of Armstrong’s view. Led especially by John Turner and others, scholars have affirmed that Gnostics, Middle Platonists, and Neoplatonists indeed have more in common philosophically than had been previously supposed; Gnos- tics were perhaps even writing commentaries on Plato’s dialogues in order to gain a respectable hearing in Plotinus’ seminars.2 Nineteenth-century America was the scene of an earlier engagement with Gnosticism, through which heterodox thinkers paved the way for its current serious reception. I will trace the roots and anticipations of contem- porary discussions, in the Neoplatonic, late Transcendentalist journal, The Platonist, and other North American sources. Metaphysical thinkers of the later American Renaissance painted their religious symbols on a Neoplatonic canvas. A secularizing world had given rise to notions of a universal syncretistic cosmic Theism, which welcomed the “esoteric” strains of all traditions. Alexander Wilder, M.D., a regular con- tributor to The Platonist, also cast a wide syncretistic net: the Neoplatonists taught Platonic philosophy in the form of a religion embracing some of the characteristic features of Jainism, the Sankhya and Pythagorean schools (hē gnōsis tōn ontōn). -

Introduction In the West Indies there is indefinite wealth waiting to be developed by intelligence and capital; and men with such resources, both English and American, might be tempted still to settle there, and lead the blacks along with them into more settled manners and higher forms of civilisation. But the future of the blacks, and our own influence over them for good, depend on their being protected from themselves and from the schemers who would take advantage of them. […] As it has been in Hayti, so it must be in Trinidad if the Eng- lish leave the blacks to be their own masters. […] [T]he keener-witted Trinidad blacks are watching as eagerly as we do the development of the Irish problem. They see the identity of the situation. (Froude 1888, 79; 86; 87) Anyhow, Mr. Froude's history of the Emancipation may here be amended for him by a reminder that, in the British Colonies, it was not Whites as masters, and Blacks as slaves, who were affected by that momentous measure. In fact, 1838 found in the British Colonies very nearly as many Negro and Mulatto slave-owners as there were white. Well then, these black and yellow planters received their quota, it may be presumed, of the £ 20,000,000 sterling indemnity. They were part and parcel of the proprietary body in the Colonies, and had to meet the crisis like the rest. They were very wealthy, some of these Ethiopic accomplices of the oppressors of their own race. -

1 Historical Studies in Education / Revue d’histoire de l’éducation ARTICLES / ARTICLES Colonization, Education, and the Formation of Moral Character: Edward Gibbon Wakefield’s A Letter from Sydney Bruce Curtis Carleton University ABSTRacT Edward Gibbon Wakefield proposed a scheme of “systematic colonization” that he claimed would guarantee the formation of civilized moral character in settler societies at the same time as it reproduced imperial class relations. The scheme, which was first hatched after Wakefield read Robert Gourlay’s A Statistical Account of Upper Canada, inverted the dominant under- standing of the relation between school and society. Wakefield claimed that without systematic colonization, universal schooling would be dangerous and demoralizing. Wakefield intervened in contemporary debate about welfare reform and population growth, opposing attempts to enforce celibacy on poor women and arguing that free enjoyment of “animal liberty” made women both moral and beautiful. Also included in the collection are letters, not involving Mundella, of the family of Robert Leader, acquired by Mundella’s daughter Maria Theresa who intended to write a biography of her father, and transcriptions by Maria Theresa of correspondence between Mundella and Robert Leader, John Daniel Leader and another Sheffield Liberal M.P., Henry Joseph Wilson. The collection does not include any of the business archives of Hine and Mundella. Anthony John Mundella (1825-1897) was born in Leicester of an Italian father and an English mother. After education at a National School he entered the hosiery trade, ultimately becoming a partner in the firm of Hine and Mundella of Nottingham. He became active in the political life of Nottingham, and after giving a series of public lectures in Sheffield was invited to contest the seat in the General Election of 1868. Mundella was Liberal M.P. for Sheffield from 1868 to 1885, and for the Brightside division of the Borough from November 1885 to his death in 1897. -

The results Wilson achieved by late April 1919, after several months of near-daily negotiation in Paris, varied between partial success and complete failure.1 Wilson had had other important goals in Paris, including establishing a framework for international arbitration of disputes, advancing labor rights, and promoting free trade and disarmament, and progress was made on all of these. But in terms of his own biography and the distinctive mission of U.S. foreign policy as he and other Americans understood it, the anti- imperial and pro-self-determination goals were paramount. -

VOLUME TWO 312 CHAPTER SEVEN BARBARISM AND RELIGION If Gibbon's work gave classical expression to the nqtion of Rome's decline and fall, it did not close the great debate on the end of the ancient world. To some admiring contemporaries he seemed to have said the last word and he long remained without significant challenge. But eventually new questions and fresh evidence led to a diversity of answers and emphases. Perhaps only the assumption contained in his title still seems reasonably certain, though even the appropriateness of 'fall' in relation to the Western Empire has raised doubts. In discussing an aspect of the perennial question two centuries after Gibbon had gazed on the ruined greatness of the imperial city, Arnaldo Momigliano expressed satisfaction that he could at least begin with that 'piece of good news': 'it can still be considered an historical truth that the Roman Empire declined and fell'} There, however, agreement seemed to end and even when attention is confined to Gibbon's own contribution to the debate, there is divergence of opinion as to what constitutes the theme and crux of his version of Rome's decline and fall. -

When Colonization Goes South: Understanding the Reasons Behind the Failure of Wakefield’s Systematic Colonization in South Australia Edwyna Harris Monash University Sumner La Croix* University of Hawai‘i 3 December 2018 Abstract Britain after the Napoleonic wars saw the rise of colonial reformers, such as Edward Wakefield, who had extensive influence on British colonial policy. A version of Wakefield’s “System of Colonization” became the basis for an 1834 Act of Parliament establishing the South Australia colony. We use extended versions of Robert Lucas’s 1990 model of a colonial economy to illustrate how Wakefield’s institutions were designed to work. Actual practice followed some of Wakefield’s principles to the letter, with revenues from SA land sales used to subsidize passage for more than 15,000 emigrants over the 1836-1840 period. Other principles, such as surveying land in advance of settlement and maintaining a sufficient price of land, were ignored. Initial problems stemming from delays in surveying and a dysfunctional division of executive authority slowed the economy’s development over its first three years and led to a financial crisis. These difficulties aside, we show that actual SA land institutions were more aligned with geographic and political conditions in SA than the ideal Wakefield institutions and that the SA colony thrived after it took measures to speed surveying and reform its system of divided executive authority. Psychosis or Spiritual Emergency: The Potential of Developmental Psychopathology for Differential Diagnosis Kevin O. St. Arnaud & Damien C. Cormier University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta, Canada This paper reviews the nosological systems in the field of psychology, comparing the classic medical model with a developmental approach to psychopathology and wellbeing. The argument is made that a developmental model offers greater refinement for distinguishing phenomenologically similar experiential states. Due to their substantial overt resemblance, a contrast between spiritual emergencies and pathological psychotic reactions is presented as an example.
