Research and Opportunities Fair March 31, 2017

RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL ENHANCEMENT AT ROLLINS

The power of scientific discovery drives us and defines our profession. The RSPH research portfolio has the potential to save lives, benefit communities, empower individuals, and directly impact that practice of public health.

Research is one of the principal missions of RSPH and a major activity of faculty and students alike. Students have the opportunity to work on research projects such as assessing the health risks from environmental exposures, the health consequences of urban sprawl, cost effectiveness of HIV prevention activities, infectious disease control, culture and health threats, health disparities, substance abuse, and a myriad of other Public Health related topics.

At the Rollins Research & Opportunities Fair you will gain a close view of the ingenuity of our community’s research as well as the scholastic contributions that our School has made to the field of public health. You will also learn about ways you can become involved in research and related educational enhancement opportunities.

Project Description:

HERCULES: Emory's Environmental Health Research Center is one of 22 Environmental Health Sciences Core Centers funded by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences. Involving researchers across Emory and , as well as the broader Atlanta community, the vision of HERCULES is to demonstrably advance the role of environmental health sciences in clinical and public health settings using the platform of the exposome. The environment, broadly defined, plays a major role in health and disease, but has been underrepresented in the research community. The exposome provides a potential vehicle to better incorporate the environmental component into the study of disease and health.

Table 24 Levy Research Group

Project Description:

Our research group is broadly interested in exploring the topic of how environmental change affects transmission and incidence of infectious diseases, with a specific focus on the ecology and epidemiology of waterborne diseases. Some of our current projects are focused in Peru and Ecuador looking at WASH, diarrheal disease and human movement.

Principal Investigator: Karen Levy Representative (s) Attending the Fair: Positions/Opportunities Available: Shanon Smith Unpaid/Volunteer position [email protected]

Table 25 Nocturnal In-Center Hemodialysis at Emory Dialysis: Modality Choice, Care Experience, and Outcomes

Project Description:

Policymakers are increasing provider incentives to use historically marginal modalities of dialysis therapy, including nocturnal in-center hemodialysis. At Emory's three dialysis clinics (and affiliated clinics at Wake Forest Baptist), disproportionately many patients have undergone nocturnal dialysis, offering a unique opportunity to study and project this development's effects. We will conduct analyses of secondary data to better understand the short- and long-term effects of nocturnal dialysis. We will also conduct a mixed methods examination of reasons why patients choose nocturnal dialysis over other modalities.

Principal Investigator: Adam Wilk and Laura Plantinga Representative (s) Attending the Fair: Adam Wilk [email protected] Positions/Opportunities Available: A research assistant will assist the project team with quantitative (as well as, potentially, qualitative) analytic work, including data management and modeling. He or she will also assist with developing manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and proposals. Manuscript co-authorship will be offered if the RA makes a sufficient contribution. Further, this RA would be well-positioned to transition into a paid RA role on related grant-supported work, if/when funding is secured -- grant proposals are currently under development.

We will conduct a survey of clinicians at community health centers regarding their experiences delivering care to chronically ill Medicaid beneficiaries, who are enrolled in different Medicaid managed care plans. We will focus on the care experiences of children with asthma or ADHD.

Principal Investigator: Adam Wilk Representative (s) Attending the Fair: Adam Wilk [email protected] Positions/Opportunities Available: One or two student research assistant(s) will be enlisted to support key project tasks, including survey logistics management, data entry and management, data cleaning, and executing select statistical analyses under the direct supervision of Dr. Wilk.
