With purpose-built event infrastructure in the Broadwater Parklands and Gold Coast Chinatown, the CBD hosts many international, civic, sporting and community events. This infrastructure will be maximised and built upon for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games strengthening our status as an outdoor entertainment city.

Gold Coast Chinatown and its laneways are the location for multicultural events and celebrations. The streetscape has been designed to host events like the Chinatown Street Markets, with purpose built event infrastructure including power, smart poles, water and flush curbs. Other streets in the CBD are live spaces for celebration.

The Broadwater Parklands offers a range of diverse locations and facilities, designed to host everything from large scale events like the marathon and triathlon for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to small family gatherings.

Other existing sporting facilities including the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Queens Park Tennis Centre, Bowls and Croquet Clubs will be enhanced to attract new events to Southport.

Cities are complex and dynamic - improved technology will help us respond quickly to new challenges. The emergence of Southport into a regionally and globally competitive CBD relies on the use of digital technologies to drive and enable data-driven decision that will affect the everyday lives of citizens.

A smart CBD involves using technology and citizen engagement to increase productivity and quality of life. It will enable and inspire the next generation of talented entrepreneurs, to reduce costs and resource consumption. World-wide, countries are developing innovative strategies devoted to achieving ‘smart’ urban growth for its metropolitan regions and as an ‘enabler’ of future economic growth.

Delivering high-speed, optic fibre connectivity will provide support for the Gold Coast CBD to attract new businesses. It is expected to drive the development of new products and services, and facilitate greater efficiencies through support services such as cloud computing, teleworking and sensor network infrastructure.
