SIGMODONTINE RODENTS (MAMMALIA: RODENTIA: CRICETIDAE) AND OTHER MICROMAMMALS AS PALE- OENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS DURING UPPERMOST ENSENADAN IN SOUTHEASTERN BUENOS AIRES PROVINCE (AR- GENTINA). A rich micromammal assemblage from Middle -Upper Pleistocene deposits in a coastal cliff lo- cality here named Complejo Ferroviario (37º 48’ 57” S, 57º 28’ 32” W, Mar Chiquita county, Buenos Aires Province) is described. Magnetostratigraphical data from a profile near the fossiliferous locality indicate that the studied assemblage is younger than the Brunhes-Matuyama boundary (0.78 Ma). The sample is largely dominated by sigmodontine rodents (Sigmodontinae: Cricetidae), including Akodon sp., Calomys cf. C. laucha-C. musculinus, Holochilus cf. H. brasiliensis (Desmarest), and Reithrodon auritus (Fischer). Few remains of caviomorph rodents (Ctenomys sp., Clyomys sp., Dolichotis sp., Galea sp., and Microcavia sp.) and marmosine marsupials (Lestodelphys sp.) are also present. The remains are mainly found in discrete subel- liptical structures attributable to fossil owl pellets. Several evidences suggest that the recorded taxa were preyed in a single event and inhabited at the same location during the assemblage formation. All taxa, ex- cept two (Clyomys sp. and Lestodelphys sp.), are currently sympatric in an area of about five degrees west of the fossiliferous locality. The estimated annual mean precipitation for deposition times is 200 mm low- er than present one. The “disharmonic” presence of Clyomys, a fossorial echymyid from subtropical low- lands, is explained as a relict in a matrix of arid-semiarid taxa. Resumen. Se describe una rica asociación de micromamíferos proveniente de niveles del Pleistoceno Medio-Superior de una localidad costera aquí denominada Complejo Ferroviario (37º 48’ 57” S, 57º 28’ 32” O, partido de Mar Chiquita, provincia de Buenos Aires). La información magnetoestratigráfica disponible para un perfil cercano a la localidad estudiada indica que el agregado tiene un edad algo más joven que el límite Brunhes-Matuyama (0,78 Ma). La muestra está mayormente dominada por roedores Sigmodontinae (Cricetidae), incluyendo Akodon sp., Calomys cf. C. laucha-C. musculinus, Holochilus cf. H. brasiliensis (Desmarest) y Reithrodon auritus (Fischer). Unos pocos restos adicionales corresponden a roe- dores caviomorfos (Ctenomys sp., Clyomys sp., Dolichotis sp., Galea sp., and Microcavia sp.) y marsupiales marmosinos (Lestodelphys sp.). Los fósiles se presentan en estructuras subelípticas discretas referibles a egagrópilas de aves rapaces. Varias evidencias sugieren que los taxones registrados fueron depredados en un mismo evento y que habitaban localmente durante la formación del depósito. Todos los micromamí- feros registrados excepto dos, Clyomys sp. y Lestodelphys sp., tienen un área de simpatría aproximada- mente cinco grados hacia el oeste de la localidad fosilífera. Abstract We studied the small mammal assemblage (bats, marsupials and rodents) of Parque Nacional Chaco and Capitán Solari (Chaco Province, Argentina) based on captures and analysis of owl pellets. Twenty-one species were recorded during a brief survey, including two marsupials, seven bats, and twelve rodents. In addition, we documented the first occurrence of the bat Lasiurus ega in the Chaco Province, and extended to the southwest the distribution of the didelphid marsupial Cryptonanus chacoensis and the oryzomyine rodent Oecomys sp. We also provided a second occurrence site in the Humid Chaco for the cricetid rodents Calomys laucha and Holochilus brasiliensis. Identified taxa belonged to species that are typical of the Humid Chaco ecoregion of Argentina. ABSTRACT: The tropical zones of Latin America are sources of a great faunal richness. A significant number of mammals are associated with damage to the agricultural and livestock industries of Colombia. Some studies have indicated that rodents cause serious economic and social damage in the agricultural, livestock, and stored product sectors of the Colombian economy. Evaluations of this damage have been based on three criteria: 1) the characteristics of the damage; 2) the species of rodent involved; and 3) the loss of production at harvest. Cereals and oil-producing crops are most affected as standing crops; in the livestock area, poultry and pork production are most affected; many agricultural products, especially grains, are attacked by rodents during the post-harvest stage. The level of economic loss caused by rodents can range from about 4 % to about 50 % depending on the crop, the season, and the species of rodent involved in the damage. Social damages are characterized by the transmission of illnesses such as salmonellosis and leptospirosis via contaminated foods or grains. This work deals with caviomorphs from two sites, with datings including the Early to Late Holocene. The taxa recorded were: Cavia sp., C. aperea, C. magna, Ctenomys sp., Phyllomys sp., Myocastor coypus, Euryzygomatomys mordax, Dicolpomys fossor, the last two of which are extinct. A new fossil species, Clyomys riograndensis sp.nov. is also described. The stratigraphic distribution of these taxa allows us to suggest a slow and gradual climatic change during the Holocene and a mosaic environment with grasslands and gallery forests, which is indicated by the presence of fossorial animals that typify open areas, coexisting with taxa of forested areas.

Eleven small mammal species were captured: the didelphid marsupials Didelphis aurita, Philander !renata and Monodelphis americana, and the rodents Nectomys squamipes, Akodol/ cursor, OligOlyzomys nigripes, Bolomys lasiurus, Oecomys con­ color (Sigmodontinae), Rattus rattus (Murinae), Proechimys iheringi and Euryzygo­ matomys guiara (Echimyidae). The heterogeneous habitat configuration probably allowed the occurrence of marsupials and more rodent species when compared to studies in monocu!ture areas. Mammals playa special role in these disturbed areas and are considered good indicators of the degree of disturbance (SOULE & WILCOX 1980). Also some opportunistic species, such as herbivore and graminivorous rodents, might become agricultural plagues with extreme population peaks (MUTZE 1990; GALANTE & CASSINI 1994). Furthermore, in rural areas, many small mammals are involved in the cycles of human parasites acting as natural reservoirs (MELLO 1991; REY 1993; DIOUTAIUTI el of. 1995). The ability to understand changes in natural populations due to human disturbance is hampered by the absence of long-term studies.

Here, we present a description of two spiny-rats species’ behavioral repertoire, Clyomys laticeps and Trinomys setosus (Rodentia: Echimyidae). The affiliative and agonistic behavioral patterns were sampled during a three-year study of captive populations of wild animals. Observational data were collected in two phases under different arrangements of individuals in groups. We also compare the behavioral traits of T. setosus and C. laticeps with the known behavioral patterns of Trinomys yonenagae. We add categories to the previous descriptions of T. setosus and a standard ethogram for C. laticeps. Trinomys setosus showed a visual and vocal display we called foot-trembling, which was not described in this form and function for other species studied until now. We discuss the differences in their sociality levels and similarities and differences among behavior patterns and repertoires.
