Owing to the convergence of morphological traits and the incongruence of molecular evidence, the phylogenetic relationships among three subfamilies Myospalacinae (zokors), Spalacinae (blind mole rats) and Rhizomyinae (bamboo rats) within the family Spalacidae remain unresolved. Here, we performed de novo transcriptome sequencing of four RNA-seq libraries prepared from brain and liver tissues of a plateau zokor (Eospalax baileyi) and a hoary bamboo rat (Rhizomys pruinosus), and analyzed the transcriptome sequences alongside a published transcriptome of the Middle East blind mole rat (Spalax galili). We characterize the transcriptome assemblies of the two spalacids, and recover the phylogeny of the three subfamilies using a phylogenomic approach. Results: Approximately 50.3 million clean reads from the zokor and 140.8 million clean reads from the bamboo ratwere generated by Illumina paired-end RNA-seq technology. All clean reads were assembled into 138,872 (the zokor) and 157,167 (the bamboo rat) unigenes, which were annotated by the public databases: the Swiss-prot, Trembl, NCBI non-redundant protein (NR), NCBI nucleotide sequence (NT), Gene Ontology (GO), Cluster of Orthologous Groups (COG), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). -

Its identification was reliably confirmed by molecular and morphological methods. Undoubtedly, this species is much more widespread in islands of the Far East. Some records of M. sikotanensis from Sakhalin including the so-called “microtinus” form, actually, should be reidentified as M. rex. The voles with complex molars from Shikotan Island and probably those from Zelenyi (= Sibotsu) Island also belong to M. rex. COLE , A ND TIM CA RO AB S TRA C T The Chiquibul Forest Reserve is located in western Belize in the Maya Mountains and protects one of the largest patches of rainforest remaining in Central America. We conducted inventories of small mammals in the forest reserve from 4 July through 8 August 2001. Our five trapping sites were centered within a few kilometers of the Las Cuevas Field Station. In total, we ran 3,686 trap-nights capturing 154 specimens (4.2% trap success) representing 15 species of small mammals. We ran mist nets for ten nights capturing 39 phyllostomid bats representing six species. Heteromys desmarestianus was the most abundant mammal trapped; it was captured at a rate four times more frequently than all other species. Ototylomys phyllotis and Handleyomys alfaroi were next in abundance. Almost all species of rodents and bats were in a high state of reproductive activity. Our efforts confirmed an additional eleven species to the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, five non-volant: Cryptotis mayensis, Oligoryzomys fulvescens, Handleyomys rostratus, Sigmodon toltecus, Nyctomys sumichrasti, and six volant: Carollia sowelli, Sturnira lilium, Artibeus jamaicensis, Dermanura toltecus, D. watsoni, Centurio senex. The biogeographic affinities of small mammals of the Maya Mountains lay more nested within the Central American faunal group – less so than the Yucatan faunal region. The discovery of Cryptotis mayensis in the Maya Mountains provided a significant range and ecological extension. -

ABSTRACT: The tropical zones of Latin America are sources of a great faunal richness. A significant number of mammals are associated with damage to the agricultural and livestock industries of Colombia. Some studies have indicated that rodents cause serious economic and social damage in the agricultural, livestock, and stored product sectors of the Colombian economy. Evaluations of this damage have been based on three criteria: 1) the characteristics of the damage; 2) the species of rodent involved; and 3) the loss of production at harvest. Cereals and oil-producing crops are most affected as standing crops; in the livestock area, poultry and pork production are most affected; many agricultural products, especially grains, are attacked by rodents during the post-harvest stage. The level of economic loss caused by rodents can range from about 4 % to about 50 % depending on the crop, the season, and the species of rodent involved in the damage. Social damages are characterized by the transmission of illnesses such as salmonellosis and leptospirosis via contaminated foods or grains. Zokor (Myospalacinae) is one of the subterranean rodents, endemic to east Asia. Due to the convergent and parallel evolution induced by its special lifestyles, the controversies in morphological classification of zokor appeared at the level of family and genus. To resolve these controversies about taxonomy and phylogeny, the phylogenetic relationships of 20 species of Muroidea and six species of zokors were studied based on complete mitochondrial genome and mitochondrial Cytb gene, respectively. Phylogeny analysis of 20 species of Muroidea indicated that the zokor belonged to the family Spalacidae, and it was closer to mole rat rather than bamboo rat. Besides, by investigating the phylogenetic relationships of six species of zokors, the status of two genera of Eospalax and Myospalax was affirmed because the two clades differentiated in phylogenetic tree represented two types of zokors, convex occiput type and flat occiput type, respectively. -
