Sri Thalpagiri Ranganathaswamy temple on the banks of river Penna is one of the most ancient temples believed to have built during 7thand 8th centuries, by Pallava rulers. Kamaskhi Thai at Jonnawada is the most popularly worshipped Goddess among the natives. Sri Lakshmi Narasimha swamy temple on the hill top of Narasimhakonda is another pilgrim destination. Kasmur and Barashahid Dargas are holy places for Muslims. A host of beaches lay around the village with in 20-30min reach. Mypadu is an exiting resort beach. Kottha Kodur is another church beach. Peace and serenity prevail over Ramathirtham temple beach. Patur, a small village 3km away from Kovur, is the birth place of the immortal Telugu poet Thikkana Somayaji . He is one of the 3 Kavithrayam poets. He translated the major portion of Sanskrit Mahabharat into Telugu. Patur is also popularly known for handloom saris. Pallipadu is a place of historical significance near Kovur. Here Gandhiji established an ashram called “Pinakini Satyagraha ashram.” Martyr Potti SriRamulu, who is the reason behind the Formation of Andhra Pradesh hailed from SPSR Nellore district only. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE: The progress of Sri YKR & K Government Degree College , Kovur, has been steady since the day of its inception. The college was established during the academic year 2008-2009 vide G.O.R.T.NO.795 dated 19-8-2008 issued by Government of A.P. with an initial sanction of 4 conventional courses B.A(HEP),B.Com(GEN),B.Sc(MPC),B.Sc(BZC). Then the college had nothing of its own to claim. It had to run on JBR high school campus. Classrooms were not many. Even those were to share with the Junior College. Hence it was 3 in 1 on the same campus with a little infrastructure. Learning environment was not so good. Students along with their teachers had to struggle to pull on, for even the basic amenities of separate toilets for boys and girls, laboratories to conduct practicles, supply of drinking water etc. The principal chamber itself was small and stuffy. Staff had to adjust with a corridor like room. No non-teaching staff was allotted to the college. The principal of D.K.W. College, Nellore, was given additional responsibility as FAC to administer over the proceedings. No regular post was sanctioned in either teaching or non-teaching areas. All lecturers were working on contract basis and they were nine. On 26-7-2010 regular Principal in the form of Smt.A.Deva Kumari was appointed. Her coming to the college gave an impetus to the development. One after the other regular posts in teaching have been sanctioned. Gradually contract faculty have to give way to competent teachers appointed on regular basis. At present except for Chemistry all the other sanctioned posts are occupied with regular lecturers. Regular post in computer science is yet to be sanctioned. These changes of betterment immensely helped to the increase of student strength. The college set off its journey with only 31 Students. Now it reached over-240 which is a very good number for a small college where huge GDC’s are struggling to collect minimum student strength. Thanks to the genuine efforts of the then principal and staff. 5 acres of land was allotted for the permanent construction of college buildings in the stovbedi colony, Kovur. The arrival of Dr. Azhar Baig to the chair as Principal on 1-7-2016 sped up the momemtum in the proceedings. His dynamism and public skills came out proven in his success of collecting a huge donation worth of Rs.75,00,000/- from a large hearted philanthropist Sri. Y. Meera Reddy to initiate the construction work in the newly acquired college land. A building block of 6 rooms was built and without delay the college was shifted on to the new campus with its name changed as Sri. YKR & K GDC after the names of donors parents( Yarrabaka.Krishna Reddy & Kousalyamma). Still the days of hardship are not over. Among the 3 rooms, one is being jointly served as Principal chamber, staff room and office. Leaving the other 2 as class rooms. Having no other go with very limited resources classes for Science students run in morning session keeping the second session for Arts students. However to catch up the modern e-development college has a virtual class room, Wifi-facility, Tele-education unit. The construction of II block consists of 4 rooms with the sum of one crore by Govt. of A.P would hopefully be completed by February is a significant step in the progress of the college. The coming of second block of buildings to use, we believe, would answer several questions of accommodation. VISION: “Bring out the best in man is Education”---M.K.Gandhi “Education is character formation”----Vivekananda “The future of India is shaped in the four walls of the classroom”—Nehru Above are the three set slogans that always inspire the vision of Sri. YKR & K college. These infact, determine our defining the aim of education, deciding the teaching, learning process and finally delivering the best possible out comes. The college aims at producing holistic individuals with comprehensive outlook. To instill human values and professional ethics among the students. To arrange guest lectures by professionals from various fields. To organize district level seminars on the topics most relevant to the present day. SWOC ANALYSIS OF SRI YKR & K GOVERNMENT DEGREE COLLEGE STRENGTHS: The Principal is the member of NAAC peer committee. Hence his administrative skills and experience would help for the development of college. Committed and competent Principal and teaching staff (12+1) is a great asset. 50% of the college staff have acquired doctorates and the other 40% are per suing their Ph.d’s. 90% of the teaching staff work on regular basis. Almost all the teaching staff come under 30-50 age group. Hence it is a fine blend of youth and experience. Location of the college stands just 100mtrs away from the main road and that makes easy transportation . The coming of the new building block adds to the strength of the college. Student enrolment is good and healthy. Compared to other GDC’s in Nellore strength of the college is far better. This college has been achieving very high pass percentage every year since 2011. This college is located in mandal head quarter of Kovur mandal. The total population of Kovur village is 35000 and surrounded by 12 villages within a range of 5k.m. Moreover, GDC kovur is the only government degree college in mandal attracting students from poor and very poor communities in this locality. There are 3 Government Junior colleges and one private Junior college in this 5k.m range, from where the college expects students to join. At present the college offers 6 UG courses –one in Arts, 2 in commerce and 3 in science. NSS unit is functioning in the college to inculcate the sense of social service, health and hygiene. WEAKNESSES: The College doesn’t have 12B status which restricts to arraign national level seminars and workshops. Further the reason prevents our well qualified experienced lecturers from offering guide ship to scholars. Limited infrastructure proved to be an obstacle to carry out certain academic activities.

Parvez , Ch.Vijaya 1, 2Department of Marine Biology, Vikrama Simhapuri University, Nellore, A.P, India-524320 Abstract: Nellore has a coastline that stretches about 169 kms. Urbanization and coastal development activities such as beach development, Krishnapatnam port expansions, industrial developments and anthropogenic metals are introduced into adjacent waters of Nellore coast. In the study, estimated the bio-accumulation of heavy metal levels (Mercury (Hg), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Zinc (Zn)) by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) (AOAC-2000) in muscle and liver tissues of Cybium guttatam (Seer) and Pampusargenteus (Silver pomfret) fishes which were collected from Krishnapatnam and Mypadu regions of Nellore District. Study results showed that the metals content was determined in the edible parts of the selected fishes and the obtained values were compared with maximum permissible limits set by International safety agencies. Selected heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Cd and Zn) concentration in the muscle and liver of selected fishes varied significantly depending upon the locations. Hg levels detected in Cybium guttatam collected from Krishnapatnam and Mypadu areas were lower than the permissible levels set by WHO,1985. Pb levels in muscle and liver of both fishes were below the maximum permissible limits in comparison with International safety agencies (EC-2005).

  • Simulation of Water Levels and Extent of Coastal Inundation Due to a Cyclonic Storm Along the East Coast of India
Nat Hazards DOI 10.1007/s11069-012-0193-6 ORIGINAL PAPER Simulation of water levels and extent of coastal inundation due to a cyclonic storm along the east coast of India A. D. Rao • P. L. N. Murty • Indu Jain • R. S. Kankara • S. K. Dube • T. S. Murty Received: 28 September 2011 / Accepted: 6 April 2012 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2012 Abstract The devastation due to storm surge flooding caused by extreme wind waves generated by the cyclones is a severe apprehension along the coastal regions of India. In order to coexist with nature’s destructive forces in any vulnerable coastal areas, numerical ocean models are considered today as an essential tool to predict the sea level rise and associated inland extent of flooding that could be generated by a cyclonic storm crossing any coastal stretch. For this purpose, the advanced 2D depth-integrated (ADCIRC-2DDI) circulation model based on finite-element formulation is configured for the simulation of surges and water levels along the east coast of India. The model is integrated using wind stress forcing, representative of 1989, 1996, and 2000 cyclones, which crossed different parts of the east coast of India. Using the long-term inventory of cyclone database, syn- thesized tracks are deduced for vulnerable coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Return periods are also computed for the intensity and frequency of cyclones for each coastal district. Considering the importance of Kalpakkam region, extreme water levels are computed based on a 50-year return period data, for the generation of storm surges, induced water levels, and extent of inland inundation.
