The Hucknall Byron Festival
th Friday 14 July Acknowledgements: The Hucknall Byron Festival The Award winning Newstead Brass Band Committee wish to express their appreciation to the Will finalize the week’s festival with following organisations that have sponsored the festival The Hucknall a musical extravaganza at the John or given their help and support with various activities: Godber Centre commencing 7.30pm Byron Festival During the evening there will be an awards ceremony to present the winners of the poetry, arts, and 2017 photographic competitions with their prizes - Tickets £5.00 available from the John Godber Centreor £6.00 on the door. Entries are invited to the poetry, art and photographic competitions. Closing date for the poetry competition will be on Friday 16th June 2017. Εγώ θα σας πω ότι το όνειρο ή µάλλον ο κόσµος των ονείρων, είναι κάτι το πραγµατικό. Ναι! Κάτι το πραγµατικό. Είναι ένας Κόσµος στον οποίον µεταφερόµαστε µε τον ύπνο... σαν να ταξιδεύει η ψυχή µας και να µπαίνει σε ένα άλλο υλικό σώµα, σε κάποια άλλη διάσταση. Ένας κόσµος στον οποίο δεν ισχύουν οι νόµοι, οι φυσικοί νόµοι που ισχύουν σε αυτόν που ζούµε όταν είµαστε ξύπνιοι! ∆εν χρειάζεται να έχεις φτερά για να πετάξεις, ούτε χρειάζεται να πονάς όταν χτυπάς. These Eyes Before
collidethese eyes before Classic yet Modern... If you’re already familiar with Collide, you surely know that the duo’s brave, forward-looking electronic sound is deeply grounded in a fusion of diverse influences (hence the band’s chosen name). Over the years, singer kaRIN and pro- ducer Statik have proven themselves to be gifted interpreters as well as courageous innovators – consider their brooding take on the Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”, a highlight of 2000’s landmark Chasing The Ghost, or their expansive take on Dusty Springfield’s “Son Of A Preacher Man”, from the remix set Distort, and the beloved anthem “The Lunatics are Taking Over the Asylum”, from their Vortex album. But nothing in the group’s history will sufficiently prepare you for These Eyes Before: a set of ten mainstream classics, each one completely reimagined by the imaginative pair. We don’t want to ruin all of Collide’s surprises, since part of the joy of listening to These Eyes Before is encountering familiar material with utterly refreshing arrangements. And you will be familiar with the playlist – any real music fan will be able to sing along to the tunes kaRIN and Statik have selected. Also, we don’t want to single out any highlights, because a project like this one is nothing but highlights. But we’d be remiss if we didn’t crow about the group’s flexibility, and their unerring ability to make songs of all kinds seem utterly consistent with the sound they’ve been developing for the past fifteen years. In their hands, “Space Oddity” becomes a gorgeous, jazzy, ethereal techno-rock stroll, and David Essex’s swaggering “Rock On” turns into a deliciously distorted slice of trip-hop. -

The Society brings together Byron scholars and devotees to support scholarship, tours, conferences, lectures, and programs. Extent: 57 boxes, 33 linear feet Language: English Repository: Drew University Library, Madison NJ Historical Note The Byron Society of America was founded in 1973 by Marsha M. Manns and Leslie A. Marchand to further the study of the life and work of Romantic poet George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron (1788-1824). The Society, originally referred to as The American Committee of the Byron Society, chose Byron’s birthday, January 22, for the founding date. The Society brings together Byron scholars throughout the United States and Canada to promote scholarship, correspondence, lectures, exhibits, conferences and tours. Early on, the Society published a newsletter that disseminated new scholarship on Byron and Romanticism. Additionally, the Society encouraged correspondence by connecting members with each other. In 1992, Manns and Marchand began discussions with the University of Delaware to provide institutional support to the Byron Society of America. In 1995, the operations of the Society were moved to the University of Delaware and Dr. Charles E. Robinson 1 became the executive director. Also in 1995, the Byron Society Collection at the University of Delaware was founded by Marsha M. Manns and Leslie A. -

Elisabeth Haich INITIATION AUTHOR'S NOTE It is far from my intentions to want to provide a historical picture of Egypt. A person who is living in any given place has not the faintest idea of the peculiarities of his country, and he does not consider customs, language and religion from an ethnographic point of view. He takes everything as a matter of course. He is a human being and has his joys and sorrows, just like every other human being, anywhere, any place, any time; for that which is truly human is timeless and changeless. My concern here is only with the human, not with ethnography and history. That is why I have, in relating the story which follows here, intentionally used modern terms. I have avoided using Egyptian sounding words to create the illusion of an Egyptian atmosphere. The teachings of the High Priest Ptahhotep are given in modern language so that modern people may understand them. For religious symbols also, I have chosen to use modern terms so that all may understand what these symbols mean. People of today understand us better if we say 'God' than if we were to use the Egyptian term 'Ptah' for the same concept. If we say 'Ptah' everyone immediately thinks, 'Oh yes, Ptah, the Egyptian God'. No! Ptah was not an Egyptian God. On the contrary, the Egyptians called the same God whom we call God, by the name of Ptah. And to take another example, their term for Satan was Seth. The words God and Satan carry meanings for us today which we would not get from the words Ptah or Seth. -

This volume is intended as an Centenary index to all material published in the 'Transactions' from 1897 to 1996, to the contents of the Record Series volumes published from 1903 to 1997, and to the reports of the Excavation Section published between 1936 and 1940. Earlier indexes were published in 1951 and 1977; these are now superseded by this new Centenary index. Contents The index is in two parts: an author index, and an index to subjects, periods, and places. AUTHOR: this lists articles under the names of their authors or editors, giving the full title, volume number and page numbers. Where an article has more than one author or editor, it is listed by title under the name of each author or editor, with relevant volume and page numbers. SUBJECT: The contents of articles are indexed by subject and by place; topics of archaeological importance are also indexed by period. Cross-references are used to refer the enquirer from one form of heading to another, for example 'Abbeys' see ' Monastic houses', or from general headings such as 'Monastic houses' to the names of individual buildings. DAY 3 NEWSTEAD ABBEY Newstead Abbey is a beautiful historic house with gardens and parkland covering more than 300 acres ( 120 hectares ) a few miles away from Nottingham . Visiting Newstead Abbey , you wander around different kinds of gardens , pass past lakes , ponds and waterfalls … Inside the Abbey, you can visit Victorian rooms and Lord Byron private apartments. History The priory of St. Mary of Newstead was founded by King Henry II of England about the year 1170 as penances following the murder of Thomas Becket . Contrary to its current name, Newstead was never an abbey: it was a priory. Sir John Byron of Colwick was granted Newstead Abbey by Henry VIII in1540 after the dissolution of the monasteries and started its conversion into a country house In may 1798, Lord Byron was a young boy of ten when he inherited the estate .The house was in a great state of disrepair ( his great-uncle from whom he inherited had a lot of debts ) but the gothic ruins with the coat of arms of the Byron family were fascinating the young boy. Newstead was his home between 1808 - 1814. Byron had a great love of animals most notably for a Newfoundland dog named Boatswain, who died of rabies in 1808. Byron commissioned an impressive marble funerary monument for Boatswain at Newstead Abbey and the 26 lines poem « Epitaph to a Dog » has become one of his best-known works. In 1818, Lord Byron sold Newstead Abbey to ease his financial troubles . Then , during the next century ,Newstead Abbey had several owners .
