  • Fall Is for Herbs
Diversified Greg Gruben Fall is for Herbs Herbs are plants that are used as flavoring in foods. The common herbs used in cooking are referred to as culinary herbs. Mild or savory herbs impart a delicate flavor to food, while the stronger or pungent herbs add zest. Herbs are also planted for their ornamental value. Planting and propagation Select a sunny, well-drained location. At planting, apply a slow-release fertilizer at the rate of 2 pounds per 100 square feet. Herbs can be annuals (live only one season) or perennials (grow back from their root systems each year). Annual herbs can be planted in an annual flower garden or vegetable garden. Be sure to plant perennial herbs at the side of the garden where they won’t interfere with next year’s soil preparation. Some herbs can be established by planting the seed directly in the garden or by starting seed indoors for later transplanting to the garden. You can obtain seed from a local garden center or seed catalog, or save the seeds produced by the herb plants for next year’s crop. To save your own seeds, harvest the entire seed head after it has dried on the plant. Then allow the seeds to dry in a protected location that is cool and dry. After the seeds are thoroughly dry, separate them from the seed heads and discard the trash. Store the seeds in sealed, labeled jars in a dark, cool, dry location. Some herb seeds such as dill, anise, caraway, or coriander can be used for flavorings.

Save Kids’ TV Campaign British children’s television - on the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Five - has been widely acknowledged as amongst the most creative and innovative in the world. But changes in children’s viewing patterns, and the ban on certain types of advertising to children, are putting huge strains on commercial broadcasters. Channel 4 no longer makes children’s programmes and ITV (until recently the UK’s second largest kids’ TV commissioner) has ceased all new children’s production. They are deserting the children’s audience because it doesn’t provide enough revenue. Channel FIVE have cut back their children’s programming too. The international channels - Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network - produce some programming here, but not enough to fill the gap, and much of that has to be international in its focus so that it can be used on their channels in other territories. The recent Ofcom report on the health of children’s broadcasting in the UK has revealed that despite the appearance of enormous choice in children’s viewing, the many channels available offer only a tiny number of programmes produced in the UK with British kids’ interests at their core. The figures are shocking – only 1% of what’s available to our kids is new programming made in the UK. • For Immediate Release the WORLD's OLDEST TEDDY BEAR
For Immediate Release 30 August 2006 Contact: Zoë Schoon 020.7752.3121 [email protected] THE WORLD’S OLDEST TEDDY BEAR MUSEUM TO BE SOLD BY PRIVATE TREATY AT CHRISTIE’S SOUTH KENSINGTON The Teddy Bear Museum, Stratford-upon-Avon South Kensington – Christie’s are pleased to present, by private treaty, the sale of the world’s oldest Teddy Bear Museum, based in Stratford-upon-Avon. The award-winning museum was opened by self- confessed teddy bear enthusiast and well known broadcaster Gyles Brandreth and his wife Michele, on 4th July 1988. Since then, this popular little museum has gone from strength to strength in one of England’s most celebrated towns. Stratford-upon-Avon attracts five million tourists annually and visitors to the Teddy Bear Museum have ranged from royalty to Tony Blair’s bear, Lynton, who recently spent his summer holidays at the Museum. The collection, personally put together by Brandreth, numbers a thousand bears and related items. It is to be sold as a going concern, along with the Tudor building (once the property of King Henry VIII) that has been its home for the last 18 years. “The Museum has come of age and it’s now time for us to find new owners for the museum and its unique collection. Our children are all grown-up and my work commitments mean that I simply don’t have the time to give it the care and attention it deserves. We want to find new owners for the Museum who will love it as much as we do and see it go from strength to strength.” Said Gyles Brandreth Highlights of the collection include several early Steiff bears, the earliest being Growler, a much- sought-after Steiff rod-bear, circa 1904.

  • Dear Friends of the JCC's Jewish & Israeli Film Series, Hello! I'm
Dear Friends of the JCC’s Jewish & Israeli Film Series, Hello! I’m Stephanie Bennett, the new coordinator of the Film Series. I am taking over for Monica Friess who led the series for the past eight years … As we embark on our 24th season, we want to thank you for your support. The festival continues to be a success because of the generosity of its sponsors. We are truly grateful. We hope that we can count on your support again this year. This year we are presenting a diverse array of films, including two children’s programs that are made possible by a grant from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. It is also important to thank the Lehigh Valley Arts Council for its role as administrators of this grant opportunity. Did you know that Curious George and Paddington Bear have Jewish roots? On February 7 we will present Monkey Business: The Adventures of Curious George’s Creators. Narrated by Sam Waterston, the film tells the story of Hans and Margret Rey, a Jewish couple who fled the Nazis and carried hidden with them the manuscript for what would become one of the best loved children’s books of all time. On March 20 we will show Nicky’s Family, which recounts how philanthropist Sir Nicholas Winton arranged safe passage for 669 Jewish children from Prague to England at the outset of WWII. This kindertransport served as inspiration for author Michael Bond, who based the beloved Paddington Bear character on children arriving in England awaiting placement in new homes.
