This paper reports on a study of house rent prices in Port Moresby, factors influencing them, and affordability of the prices. Data was obtained from houses that were advertised for rent in Port Moresby for a period of 13 months and were analysed using the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model. The results show that monthly house rent prices range from 2357 to 34,286 Papua New Guinea Kina (PGK), or 714 to 10,389 U.S. dollars (USD), and the median price was 7286 PGK (2208 USD). Houses located in the central business district had the highest median house rent price, whereas low-income areas had the lowest rent price. By dividing the median house rent price by gross household income, the housing affordability index was 3.4. House rent price was influenced by factors such as number of bedrooms and location. To make house rent prices more affordable for Port Moresby residents, it is necessary to supply more houses for rent relative to demand, especially in low-income areas. Relevant governmental agencies should put more effort toward unlocking more customarily-owned land for housing development and toward facilitating the private sector to construct more low-cost houses for rent, which are affordable for low to middle income households. -

FAECAL SLUDGE MANAGEMENT IN PORT MORESBY A Technical, Social & Half of the population in Port Moresby dispose of their faecal waste via networked wastewater systems (sewerage or storm water drains) of political Economy which only 10% is safely transported and treated. The networked Assessment of the wastewater system failures are caused by the congestion of the sewers Status of Faecal with foreign objects and overloading with water. Almost all the other half Sludge Management of the population reside in non-networked or informal settlements using in Port Moresby on-site sanitation systems with only 4% safely transported and treated. The on-site sanitation system failures are primarily caused by the failure to manage the effluent (liquid) rather than the sludge (solids). For dry pit toilets, excessive moisture in the pits destroys the aerobic digestion process rendering the pit contents unsafe. Limiting the intrusion of water, improving air flow and reducing their use for just urination will greatly improve the efficiency of dry pit toilets. For the water borne toilets, the high density of the soil in Port Moresby means that all the effluent cannot be absorbed by the leach drains leading to either the discharge of effluent to the storm water or the premature filling of septic tanks with effluent (not sludge). Separating the grey water from the black water will improve the efficiency of leach pits dramatically increasing the time between empties for septic tanks. -

The Independent State of Papua New Guinea has applied for financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) towards the cost of Sustainable Highlands Highway Investment Program (SHHIP) - Tranche 2. A part of this financing will be used for payments under the Contract named above. Bidding is open to Bidders from eligible source countries of ADB. The eligibility rules and procedures of the ADB will govern the bidding process. 2. The Department of Works (DoW) (“the Employer”) invites sealed bids from eligible Bidders for the design, rehabilitation and/or construction of 35 bridges (Bridge No. 1-35 along the Highlands Highway from Lae Nadzab to Henganofi) including associated works under SHHIP for the Contract Packages as shown below under Design-Build Contract.
