Six ladies met with the idea to quilt and share ideas together. We made pillow cases for the Presbyterian Hospital and small cloth dolls for the Children's Hospital. In 2014 we changed our name to Nimble Thimbles. Our goal was to include everyone using a needle, thus the name change. We do a lot of stitching and have a lot of fun too. Therefore, I am using this plat- form to address some issues that have come to my attention. Since the cost for out-of-town memberships to our Senior Center went up in January 2020, there have been a few miscon- ceptions that have come to my attention. First and foremost, the one rumor that I would definitely like to address is the story going around that the Prospect Town Council raised the dues of our out-of-town members because they are trying to “get rid” of the non-residents that come here. The story goes that the Town Council is trying to keep our Senior Center strictly for Prospect residents only. Nothing could be further from the truth. I value the out-of-town members who come here. I feel they have contributed significantly to the growth of our Senior Center. Many of these members run programs here and volun- teer in a number of different capacities. They are my lifeline and help me in ways that I could never repay them for. I and the Town Council members would never want to “get rid” of them. I will tell you point blank why the Town Council decided to raise membership dues for out- of-town members.

  • NCOTA Craft Session Saturday, November 10, 2018 Submission Deadline – Wednesday, August 1, 2018
NCOTA Craft Session Saturday, November 10, 2018 Submission Deadline – Wednesday, August 1, 2018 Crafts are part of the foundation of occupational therapy, and North Carolina has a rich cultural history around crafts and music. The Tar Heel state has been recognized nationally and globally for its craft traditions. With this in mind, we have decided to return to our OT roots by offering a unique opportunity at our upcoming Fall 2018 NCOTA Conference. During the first-of-its-kind Craft Session, practitioners from across the state will showcase their talents and provide an in-depth activity analysis illustrating how each craft could be adapted for use with diverse client populations. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit a number of different craft tables and leave with new treatment ideas (and maybe a new hobby!) to take back to any practice setting. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS • What kinds of crafts are acceptable? NCOTA is looking for crafts of all kinds. If you know it, you can show it! Here are a few examples for inspiration: o Textile Crafts (knitting, sewing, quilting, appliqué, weaving, dyeing, embroidery, crocheting) o Paper Crafts (papier-mache, calligraphy, collaging, papermaking, quilling, printing/stamping, cardmaking) o Decorative Crafts (metalwork, stenciling, stained glass, gilding, basketry) o Wood Crafts (woodcarving, furniture making, woodburning) o Pottery and Glass Crafts (ceramics, mosaics, beadmaking, glass blowing, glass etching) o Fashion Crafts (jewelry, hats, leatherwork, garment production) o Other Crafts (soap making, candle making, beer making, book binding, doll making, enamelling, floral design, ikebana, toy-making) • How will the Craft Session be organized? Presenters will have individual tables and can stand or remain seated, but must remain by their craft tables for the duration of the session and actively engage conference attendees.

  • The Right to Be an Artist: Operationalizing Studio Art Practices for People with Cognitive and Intellectual Disabilities
THE RIGHT TO BE AN ARTIST: OPERATIONALIZING STUDIO ART PRACTICES FOR PEOPLE WITH COGNITIVE AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES CHRISTINA YARMOL A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN CRITICAL DISABILITY STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO October 2020 © Christina Yarmol, 2020 Abstract This dissertation, The Right to be an Artist: Operationalizing Studio Art Practices for People with Cognitive and Intellectual Disabilities examines the practical, philosophical, fiscal and social policy realities of people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities (CIDs) who want to live as artists in the community. It investigates the art practices of 16 local artists working in an urban studio endeavouring to realize their dreams against the barriers mounted by existing disability policies and the art world. Due to the nature of the participants’ disabilities, the research also looks to eight individuals who support these artists’ journeys, deepening the reader’s understanding of studio processes and supports. This multi-methods study weaves narrative inquiry and arts-informed methodologies into an intricate tapestry employing methods such as review of literature, face-to-face interviews, participant observation, collaborative artwork, art creation, art analysis and the researcher’s journaled personal experiences as an artist, an art educator, and a researcher. Since art making is central to knowledge-building in this dissertation, each chapter begins with an artwork and an artist’s statement by the artist-teacher-researcher to orient the reader toward the author’s thinking. The chapter outlining the narrative data of the participants also highlights a collaborative drawing project between the researcher and an artist at the studio.
