El TOC es una enfermedad. Es un trastorno neurobiológico que interfiere con la forma en que funciona el cerebro y aparece en los encefalogramas. Cuando tienes TOC, parece como si tu cerebro se atasca, y experimentas niveles de ansiedad muy altos. Tienes un pensamiento o presión perturbadora y no sabes cómo desecharla. Todas las formas de TOC, y hay muchas, involucran: ∑∑ Obsesiones – miedos, dudas, preocupaciones y/o pensamientos no deseados y perturbadores, y ∑∑ Compulsiones – comportamientos repetitivos (físicos o mentales) que tienen la intención de aliviar las obsesiones pero que terminan por reforzarlas y empeorar el TOC. Se diagnostica TOC cuando las obsesiones y compulsiones causan sufrimiento significativo, y consumen tiempo (más de una hora al día) e interfieren con la habilidad de la persona para funcionar cada día. La Terapia Cognitiva Conductual (TCC) le enseña a las personas con TOC cómo romper el ciclo vicioso de los pensamientos obsesivos seguidos del comportamiento compulsivo. Ayuda al cerebro a funcionar más normalmente, y ese cambio se puede observar en los encefalogramas también. Muchas personas con TOC no saben que tienen una enfermedad tratable y, por lo tanto, no piden ayuda. Otras se sienten demasiado avergonzadas para buscar tratamiento. Si tienes TOC, no tienes porque sentirte avergonzado. No es culpa de nadie que tengas TOC, no es ni tu culpa ni la de nadie más. Sentí miedo de contarselo a alguien durante mucho tiempo, pero finalmente logré confiar en un terapeuta del centro de salud estudiantil. Él dijo que se trata de una forma de TOC común llamada “pensamientos intrusos”, y que él ha tratado a otros estudiantes con este trastorno. 6 ¿Cuáles son los síntomas comunes? Si bien hay muchos síntomas comunes, cada persona es diferente y el TOC virtualmente puede tomar cualquier forma. Tu puedes tener TOC aun cuando tu síntoma no aparezca en esta lista. ¿Cómo sé si tengo TOC o algo más, como Trastorno por Déficit de Atención o depresión? Un terapeuta debidamente formado,- te diremos cómo encontrar uno más adelante en esta guía -, puede diagnosticar TOC y trastornos relacionados, como el trastorno de atención deficitaria(ADD, por su sigla en inglés), ansiedad y depresión. Algunas personas tienen más de un diagnóstico. De ser necesario, tu terapeuta también te podra informar acerca de opciones de tratamiento para los otros trastornos, si fuera necesario. Sabía la materia, pero mi TOC hacía que fracasara en mis clases. Mis padres y profesores no zzzzzzzzzzzzzzsabían qué me estaba pasando, y yo tampoco. Cuando finalmente hablé con un consejero, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzaprendí sobre el TOC y recibí tratamiento. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzz6 zzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzz ¿Todos tenemos un poquito de TOC? La gente dice cosas como “¡Soy muy obsesivo-compulsivo sobre esas cosas!” Se ha vuelto común que la gente hable informalmente e incluso bromee sobre tener TOC. Pero el verdadero TOC causa un sufrimiento bastante serio. Se diagnostica cuando las obsesiones y compulsiones son tan severas que consumen mucho tiempo (más de una hora al día), causan sufrimiento, e interfieren con el trabajo, la escuela o las relaciones sociales o de pareja. Aun cuando tus síntomas parezcan ser leves o pienses que puedes manejarlos, el recibir tratamiento te ayudará a evaluar cómo están afectando tu vida.

In humans, a lack of 5-HT2B receptors is associated with serotonin-dependent phenotypes, including impulsivity and suicidality. A lack of 5-HT2B receptors in mice eliminates the effects of molecules that directly target serotonergic neurons including amphetamine derivative serotonin releasers, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that 5-HT2B receptors directly and positively regulate raphe serotonin neuron activity. By ex vivo electrophysiological recordings, we report that stimulation by the 5-HT2B receptor agonist, BW723C86, increased the firing frequency of serotonin Pet1-positive neurons. Viral overexpression of 5-HT2B receptors in these neurons increased their excitability. Furthermore, in vivo 5-HT2B-receptor stimulation by BW723C86 counteracted 5-HT1A autoreceptor-dependent reduction in firing rate and hypothermic response in wild-type mice. By a conditional genetic ablation that 5-HTKO eliminates 5-HT2B receptor expression specifically and exclusively from Pet1-positive serotonin neurons (Htr2b mice), we demonstrated that behavioral and sensitizing effects of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine), as well as acute behavioral and chronic neurogenic effects of the antidepressant fluoxetine, require 5-HT2B receptor expression in serotonergic neurons.
