Lisbon VISITING LISBON AND THE AQUARIUM

On this excursion you'll be able to take a close look at the two sides to Lisbon: the historical and monumental side which recounts the city's long and glorious past, made up of momentous geographical discoveries and extremely advantageous colonies; and the modern and futuristic side of a forward-looking capital city. After a panoramic bus tour, which will give you the chance to see some of the city's most interesting landmarks, you'll arrive in Baixa, a district that was entirely rebuilt in the 1800s under the supervision of the Marquês de Pombal. Here you'll visit Dom Pedro IV Square, or the 'Rossio' as it is more commonly known, the beating heart of Lisbon life: here you'll have some free time to admire the elegant historical buildings that surround the square or to fit in a bit of shopping. Returning to the bus, you'll drive along the Tagus River before coming to the Parque das Naçoes, the site developed to host the Expo 1998 World Exhibition, whose extremely modern buildings, designed by some of the biggest names in contemporary architecture, will take your breath away. Then on to the Oceanário, the largest aquarium in Europe and the second biggest in the world, home to 10,000 plants and animals and over 350 different species. This trip will appeal to both adults and children, who'll be able to find out more about the various marine ecosystems faithfully reproduced here. Not to be missed is the eye-catching central tank which, over 5000 m3 in volume, hosts a variety of life forms found in our planet's oceans. At the end of the visit you'll have a little free time to wander around the park, walk along the banks of the River Tago and do a bit of shopping. Valencia CITY OF ARTS AND SCIENCE

Valencia today is one of Spain's largest cities. It is a city that never fails to surprise, as it balances its important historical elements with a futuristic cultural and architectural "heart". Your fantastic journey through the centuries will take you to the Lonja, the old silk exchange, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic civil architecture in Europe. Directly in front of the Lonja you will find one of the liveliest places in the whole city: the colourful, bustling market where vegetables, spices, fish and the famous Serrano ham are bought and sold every day inside an elegant building. The cathedral perfectly reflects Valencia's past as first a Gothic, then a Renaissance and then a Baroque city of art. Afterwards you will visit the Science Museum, designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, which will transport you into the future. There will be time to discover how this gigantic, spectacular cultural centre constructed of glass and concrete shows just how art and science, teaching and interactive technology have improved the life of man.

Valencia TREASURES OF ART AND POPULAR CULTURE

Your discovery of Valencia will begin at the Cathedral, better known to Valencians as "La Seu", or "The Seat", which still represents the heart of the religious, cultural and daily life of the city. Building began in 1262 in a Gothic-Cistercian style, and carried on into the 18th century; the result is the harmonious mix of different styles to be found today. Under one of the doorways every Thursday the famous "Tribunal de Las Aguas" (Water Court), the oldest legal institution in Europe, is held. Justice is dispensed on the spot concerning arguments over the irrigation of Valencia's fertile plain. But it is in the Cathedral that you will find the most jealously guarded, ancient and venerated Christian relic: the Holy Chalice that Christ used in the celebration of the last supper. From the sacred to the profane: you will then head for the Lonja, the old silk exchange, one of the most fascinating pure Gothic civil buildings in history. Across the road you will have the chance to take a look at the one of the largest covered markets in Europe covering over 8,000 square metres with around a thousand outlets. Glass cupolas, art nouveau iron finishings, brightly coloured tiles ("") form the backdrop to the incredible colours and aromas of the stalls. A taste of tradition, and some biting satire, await you in the

"Museo Fallero" with its "fallas" (papier-mâché figures), monuments expertly crafted by people from the various districts of the city, who work all year round to help organise and bring the city's most important Festival to life.

Barcelona BARCELONA AND LA SAGRADA FAMILIA

The first destination on the excursion will be La Sagrada Familia, icon and symbol of the city of Barcelona and a landmark for visitors from all over the world, often considered to be one of the most extraordinary monuments ever constructed by man. It is an imposing neo-Gothic church, designed using the great medieval cathedrals as models of reference, and constructed in a modernist style (the Catalan version of Art Nouveau). The project and its realisation was entrusted to renowned architect Antoni Gaudì (just over thirty years of age at the time), who worked on it for the rest of his life. Having begun in 1882, work still continues today following the

Costa Magica - Spain, Morocco, Portugal PAGE 18 PRINTED DOCUMENT 8/8/2010 MEDITERRANEAN

plans laid down by its designer: the fact that you'll be able to watch one of the masterpieces of world architecture being constructed before your very eyes will make your visit even more fascinating. Your guide will show you the two completed facades (the Nativity and the Passion facades) and will then lead you inside the church where expert craftsmen continue to work on a masterpiece in constant evolution. Next it's on to Park Guell, another of genius Gaudi's incomplete works: conceived at the beginning of the 1900's as a futuristic residential district, at the time the project failed to achieve the success that had been hoped for and work was interrupted. Yet Gaudi had fortunately already begun work on an inimitable project, with its wide winding pathways, benches and with multicoloured mosaics in pure modernist style. Your visit will conclude with a trip to Casa Mila, better known as "La Pedrera" ("the quarry"): this building undeniably represents Gaudi's most mature work and is distinctive for its myriad of revolutionary and visionary details, true testament to his extraordinary creativity. Barcelona's historical and cultural traditions, its monuments and mild climate make it one of the liveliest and most attractive cities in Spain. The tour first climbs Montjuic Hill, featuring lush gardens and beautiful views of the city. Crossing the town centre and driving along the main roads, you will head for the northern part of the city. There, in addition to the Avenida de la Diagonal, is the impressive cathedral of the Sagrada Familia (outside visit only), a monumental church in the neo-Gothic style begun in 1882 according to Antonio Gaudi's plans and still under construction today. You will then continue to the Barrio Gotico (Gothic Quarter) which boasts the Cathedral, a masterpiece of architecture. To conclude, we'll visit Parque Güell, designed by Gaudi. This is not only a park but was to be a housing complex with which the Catalonian architect intended to inspire a new style of town planning. Please note: In the event of religious celebrations the visit of the cathedral will be an external view only.

Barcelona GAUDI'S MASTERPIECES

This trip will take you to the highly original Guell Park. Gaudì initially envisaged this area as a large English-style park, but successively its creation was largely entrusted to one of his disciples, Josep Maria Jujol. Its undulating benches covered in ceramic fragments of many shapes and colours are fascinating objects, whose numerous details and shades will certainly catch your eye. You will have time to stroll along the paths of this marvellous park, before boarding your coach for the short trip to "Eixample" district, where the famous "Sagrada Familia" (outside visit only) cathedral is situated. A local guide will give you a detailed commentary of the details of the façade. Finally, you will have some free time, as many of you will certainly be tempted to do some shopping. Your next stop will be Casa Mila, better known as "La Pedrera" (The Stone Quarry), which certainly represents Gaudì's most mature work. No other building could better represent Modernism. This was the last residential building to be designed by Gaudì and was built between 1906 and 1912. It is characterised by a myriad of revolutionary details, which testify to the artist's creativity and extraordinary technical mastery. The next masterpiece on your itinerary is Casa Batllo, a residential building that exudes dreamlike atmosphere. You will be able to admire its façade, which is completely covered in a multicoloured mosaic of shiny scales. The same technique has been used for the roof. The suggestive façade recalls the legend of Saint George and his fight with the dragon: according to this reading, the cross can be interpreted as the tail of the dragon and the row of balconies as the bones of its victims. On your way back to the ship you will cross the commercial heart of the old city and of Barcelona itself - the famous Plaza de Catalunya - and the harbour area.
