E-mails: [email protected] & [email protected] 2 University of 08 mai 1945, Guelma, Algeria 3 Biology Department, University of Annaba, Annaba, Algeria RÉSUMÉ.— Facteurs environnementaux influençant les communautés d’Odonates de trois rivières méditerranéennes : les oueds Kebir-Est, Seybouse et Rumel, nord-est algérien.— Les Odonates sont une composante importante des peuplements des milieux lotiques et leur abondance et diversité renseignent sur l’intégrité écologique de ces hydrosystèmes. L’inventaire odonatologique de trois oueds majeurs algériens : Kebir- Est, Seybouse et Rhumel, a permis l’identification de 40 espèces. Nos résultats révèlent la présence de Calopteryx exul, endémique maghrébin, dans l’oued Seybouse et semblent confirmer l’extinction de la population type dans l’oued Rhumel où l’espèce avait été découverte au XIXe siècle. Nos résultats indiquent également l’expansion de plusieurs espèces: Coenagrion caerulescens, Orthetrum nitidinerve, Trithemis kirbyi et Urothemis edwardsii dont la population relictuelle est en danger critique d’extinction. La mesure de diverses variables physicochimiques (altitude, température, conductivité, etc.) nous a permis d’explorer une possible co-structure entre les jeux de données faunistiques et de variables environnementales. L’analyse des données indique que la richesse spécifique est, selon l’oued, variablement correlée à l’hydropériode, à la conductivité et à la température de l’eau, suggérant son utilité dans l’évaluation de l’intégrité écologique des cours d’eau méditerranéens. -

Summary – After the third European Congress of Odonatology (ECOO) which took place from 11 to 17 July in Montpellier (France), 21 odonatologists from six countries participated in the week-long field trip that was organised in the Aude department. This area was chosen as it is under- surveyed and offered the participants the possibility to discover the Languedoc-Roussillon region and the dragonfly fauna of southern France. In summary, 43 sites were investigated involving 385 records and 45 dragonfly species. These records could be added to the regional database. Nansei Islands Biological Diversity Evaluation Project Report 1 Chapter 1
Introduction WWF Japan’s involvement with the Nansei Islands can be traced back to a request in 1982 by Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. The “World Conservation Strategy”, which was drafted at the time through a collaborative effort by the WWF’s network, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), posed the notion that the problems affecting environments were problems that had global implications. Furthermore, the findings presented offered information on precious environments extant throughout the globe and where they were distributed, thereby providing an impetus for people to think about issues relevant to humankind’s harmonious existence with the rest of nature. One of the precious natural environments for Japan given in the “World Conservation Strategy” was the Nansei Islands. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was the President of the WWF at the time (now President Emeritus), naturally sought to promote acts of conservation by those who could see them through most effectively, i.e. pertinent conservation parties in the area, a mandate which naturally fell on the shoulders of WWF Japan with regard to nature conservation activities concerning the Nansei Islands. This marked the beginning of the Nansei Islands initiative of WWF Japan, and ever since, WWF Japan has not only consistently performed globally-relevant environmental studies of particular areas within the Nansei Islands during the 1980’s and 1990’s, but has put pressure on the national and local governments to use the findings of those studies in public policy. Unfortunately, like many other places throughout the world, the deterioration of the natural environments in the Nansei Islands has yet to stop. -

A New Species of Eurysticta WATSON from Australia (Odonata: Isostictidae)

THEISCHINGER Abstract: Eurysticta reevesi sp.n. (o* holotype: Torrens Creek Gorge, White Mountains National Park, Queensland, Australia) is described after two males. The species is illustrated and compared with the described species of Eurysticta WATSON. Key words: Eurysticta, new species, Australia. Introduction WATSON et al. (1991) listed three species of Eurysticta WATSON from Australia. They are E. coolawanyah WATSON, E. coomalie WATSON and E. kununurra WATSON, all known only from north-western Australia and/or Northern Territory. Recently, however E. oolawanyah was tentatively recorded from inland Queensland (REEVES in press). Following a request, Mr D. Reeves (Herston, Queensland) sent me the Erysticta from Queensland for further study. As it turned out, the Eurysticta from Queensland is not E. coolawanyah and does not belong to a described species. It is therefore described as new and compared with its congeners below. The terminology used is that of CHAO (1953). Description Eurysticta reevesi spec.nov. (Figs 1-5) Primary type: Holotype 6: Queensland, Torrens Creek Gorge, White Mountains National Park, 20° 28'50"S/I44°55'03"E, 580 m, 16-17.4.2000, H.B. Hines). Additional material: 1 paratype 8, same data as holotype. Holotype and paratype in ANIC (Australian National Insect Collection, CSIRO, Canberra). Name: Dedication to Deniss Reeves, president of the Australian Dragonfly Society, who was the first to draw attention to the existence of a species of Eurysticta in Queensland. -

Mainly members of the damselflies (suborder Zygoptera) are dependent on this special type of environment. The small coenagrionid Roppaneura beckeri Santos (Odonata Coenagrionidae Protoneurinae), a damselfly endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, is the only known Odonata breeding in the terrestrial umbellifers of Eryngium floribundum (Cham. et Schltdl.). This is a species-specific association with a hostplant unparalleled in the order. It also is the only species within the subfamily Protoneurinae to occupy phytotelmata habitats. Here, we report on a population of R. beckeri rediscovered after 42 years and recorded for the first time from the southern Atlantic Forest from the state of Paraná. The morphology and the distribution of this species is reviewed and based on these primary data future conservation strategies are discussed. We suggest including R. beckeri as a priority species for dragonfly conservation policies due to its exclusive biological characteristics, evolutionary rele- vance, and occurrence in urban to peri-urban landscapes.
