The High Kings Are Finbarr Clancy, Darren Holden and Brian Dunphy
The High Kings are Finbarr Clancy, Darren Holden and Brian Dunphy. The High Kings formed in June 2007 when Brian, Darren, Finbarr and former member Martin Furey were asked to join a brand new Irish ballad group by David Kavanagh after he had noticed a gap in the market for a band specialising in traditional Irish music. It didn’t take long during their first studio rehearsal for them to realise that the way their individual voices blended together, that they were onto something special. The High Kings play 13 instruments between them creating the unique sound and atmosphere that they still showcase to this day. This was confirmed when their self-titled debut album reached number 2 on the world Billboard Music chart. In March 2009 The High Kings played 5 consecutive sold out shows to a packed audience in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre. Towards the end of 2009 The High Kings licensed their second studio album ‘Memory Lane’ to Universal Music Ireland signifying the fast trajectory that the band had taken in their short lifespan. ‘Memory Lane’ was released in February 2010 and after a successful Irish tour the album went platinum in June only 4 months after it’s initial release. They followed ‘Memory Lane’ with a ‘Live In Ireland’ album which received critical acclaim as it showcased the energy that the band brings to the live shows. By 2011 the band had out grown the venues they had been previously playing and had to start playing larger venues not only in Ireland but also in America and across Europe. -

“Whiskey in the Jar”: History and Transformation of a Classic Irish Song Masters Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Dana DeVlieger, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2016 Thesis Committee: Graeme M. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process. I would also like to thank Johanna Devaney and Anna Gawboy for their valuable insight and ideas for future directions and ways to improve. -

Municipal Official Letter
More than 150 city and town officials support the Decker/Garballey 100% Renewable Energy Act July 2, 2020 Dear Chair Golden, Chair Barrett, and members of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy, As municipal officials representing cities and towns across Massachusetts, we ask you to report favorably on the 100% Renewable Energy Act (H.2836), filed by Representative Marjorie Decker and Representative Sean Garballey. Fossil fuels are polluting our air and water, harming our health, and changing our climate in dangerous ways. In recent months, we’ve learned more about how pollution from fossil fuels puts people at risk from diseases like COVID-19. Fortunately, we can envision a future where all of the energy we use to power our homes, our businesses, our institutions, and our transportation system comes from clean, renewable sources like the sun and the wind. More than 200 global companies, along with major Massachusetts institutions like Partners HealthCare and Boston University, have set 100% renewable energy targets. Thirteen states have pledged to eliminate fossil fuel electricity by 2050 or sooner. Across the Commonwealth, municipal leaders are taking big steps to reduce energy consumption and increase the adoption of renewable energy. At least a dozen communities in Massachusetts, from Watertown to Northampton, have committed to 100% renewable energy targets, and others are considering similar goals. These local initiatives give us confidence that a future powered entirely by renewable energy is achievable. When we achieve 100% renewable energy, our air will be cleaner and we’ll help prevent the worst impacts of global warming, while building a stronger, more vibrant economy. -
High Kings 2016 BIOG FINAL
High Kings Biography - May 2016 There comes a time when the dues have been paid and when the tools of the apprenticeship are neatly stowed away. The craft, and the honing of the craft, continues, but the dust – so to speak – has settled on the ground. Time to move on. Almost ten years ago, four Irish singers, performers and songwriters decided to take a calculated risk. The constituent parts of The High Kings – Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden – each had a wealth of history in the music business behind them, but knew that in order to maintain any level of creative interest they would have to boldly go where no other Irish ballad group had gone before. In truth, back in the mid-late Noughties, Ireland needed a group like The High Kings. The heyday of ballad groups such as The Clancy Brothers and The Dubliners was a distant memory for generations of music fans, and to have another bunch of Irish lads taking up the baton and continuing the tradition was great news to thousands of fans worldwide. “We could sing well, play our instruments well and harmonise well,” says Darren Holden, humbly underselling somewhat the numerous skill sets of the individual members. “People were looking for guys with character, presence – not just cardboard cut-outs – so the respective experience we all had wasn't just helpful but essential. The four members immediately knew that something special was taking place (“we knew within the space of a few songs that there was magic”), and within months had clicked as a creative unit as well as friends. -
The High Kings
The High Kings The High Kings are an Irish folk group formed in Dublin in 2008 by Celtic Woman manager Dave Kavanagh. The band consists of Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden. By February 2014, the group had released three studio albums, one live album, and one DVD. All of their studio albums appeared at number three or higher on the Billboard world music chart, the first two went platinum in Ireland and all their albums charted in Ireland. Coming from accomplished Musical pedigrees, The High Kings grew up in households soaked in the Irish Musical tradition and each member of the band witnessed first hand the power of well crafted Irish music on an audience. Since The High Kings started, they have sold out hundreds of shows, in Ireland and the US, made numerous TV appearances, and achieved platinum status with both albums. Taking some of the classic ballad repertoire from the past and mixing those songs with new and exciting modern songs in the folk idiom, The High Kings are embarking to become the hottest folk and ballad act of the new millennium. For centuries, Ireland was ruled by High Kings. As their reign came to an end, their deeds and stories merged into the world of legend and myth and the High Kings of Ireland were no more except in story, music and song. Until now. Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden, renowned vocalists and musicians, have come together to create the most exciting Irish ballad group to emerge since The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem electrified the worldwide folk revival of the 1960s. -
