Unfortunately, as long as police can arrest a youth and lay the charge of simple possession, the health risks we have each seen in social work, the emergency room and legal aid will remain unchanged. The risk of being handcuffed by a police officer, being charged or the thought of being obliged to appear in a courtroom can be extremely consequential to a teen. Most young people have very little insight into the work- ings of the justice system. It is likely they will assume that being found with a substance like Xanax will land them in a locked facility. They may already be under the influence of a substance when they realise they are at risk of a police officer finding it in their possession. This clouds their judgement in an already stressful situation and further increases the risk that they will consume an unsafe amount of a substance to get rid of it, potentially leading to serious harm or death. A 2018 policy brief on decriminalisation by the Canadi- an Centre on Substance Abuse and Addiction examines how other countries approach possession and connec- tion back to supportive health programs. The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police supports the decrimi- nalisation of personal, illicit drug possession, and the Public Prosecution Service of Canada is taking steps to decrease the likelihood of conviction for personal, illicit drug possession. Bhansali’s Devdas is inspiring in its song and dance sequences and nobody can beat the master for his eye for finer detail. Shahrukh Khan, remains King Khan, even as Devdas, Aishwarya brought a tragic beauty to Paro but one can’t really compete with Suchitra Sen’s ‘speaking eyes’. Madhuri brought a definite grace to the role of Chan- dramukhi but again falls short of Vijyanthi- mala. In fact, it’s unfair to compare our stars of today with their ‘teachers’ in a manner of speaking! Both the movies are a must watch, definitely. Anurag Kashyap’s 2009 DevD merits a men- tion here as the modern adaptation of Devdas. Raw, cinematographically brilliant, it has amazing performances by Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin. The movie perfectly captures the rougher edges of love, heartbreak and the harsh life of today. I like it as it is the only Devdas which deviates from the ending and has Dev and Chandra in love and happy (sniff sniff…I love happy endings) and also because of the unapologetic Kalki who is accepted as she is and Mahie Gill as Paro who tells a few needed home truths to the spoilt brat that Dev- das is. All in all, the saga continues and I am sure we will see some more adaptations in the years to come.
