  • Mucarsel-Powell Continues to Surge, Earns 50% of Fl-26
MUCARSEL-POWELL CONTINUES TO SURGE, EARNS 50% OF FL-26 In a late-September DCCC IE survey of likely 2018 general election voters conducted by GBA, Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell leads Republican Carlos Curbelo by 2 points, winning 50% of the district. This result is consistent with recent polling numbers in the district, Mucarsel-Powell earning 49% to Curbelo’s 48%, in a recent GQR poll. This 9-point shift since July’s survey, also conducted by GBA, reflects aggressive, early communication, driven by Debbie’s campaign and mirrored by the DCCC IE. To date, that paid communication has focused primarily on the contrast between Congressman Curbelo’s record on healthcare in Washington and Debbie’s record of making affordable healthcare more accessible in South Florida. Additionally, the realignment in the race echoes what the July poll’s informed vote projects. Mucarsel-Powell leads Congressman Curbelo among key slices of the electorate, beating Curbelo by 17 points among registered Independent/No Party Affiliation voters, (57% to 40%). Mucarsel-Powell also leads Curbelo by 16 points among voters under 40 years old (58% to 42%). Mucarsel-Powell also holds a 5-point advantage among women, earning 51% of women to Congressman Curbelo’s 46%. Just 44% of voters have an opinion of Mucarsel-Powell in a district that only fully engages when vote by mail ballots arrive at voters’ doorsteps. Voters hold a net- positive opinion of Mucarsel-Powell, 26% of voters have a favorable view while 18% have an unfavorable view. Despite this lower profile, Mucarsel-Powell still wins 50% of the vote, and in fact, 32% of voters who vote for Mucarsel-Powell are not able to identify her.

  • The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network
PLATFORMS AND OUTSIDERS IN PARTY NETWORKS: THE EVOLUTION OF THE DIGITAL POLITICAL ADVERTISING NETWORK Bridget Barrett A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Daniel Kreiss Adam Saffer Adam Sheingate © 2020 Bridget Barrett ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Bridget Barrett: Platforms and Outsiders in Party Networks: The Evolution of the Digital Political Advertising Network (Under the direction of Daniel Kreiss) Scholars seldom examine the companies that campaigns hire to run digital advertising. This thesis presents the first network analysis of relationships between federal political committees (n = 2,077) and the companies they hired for electoral digital political advertising services (n = 1,034) across 13 years (2003–2016) and three election cycles (2008, 2012, and 2016). The network expanded from 333 nodes in 2008 to 2,202 nodes in 2016. In 2012 and 2016, Facebook and Google had the highest normalized betweenness centrality (.34 and .27 in 2012 and .55 and .24 in 2016 respectively). Given their positions in the network, Facebook and Google should be considered consequential members of party networks. Of advertising agencies hired in the 2016 electoral cycle, 23% had no declared political specialization and were hired disproportionately by non-incumbents. The thesis argues their motivations may not be as well-aligned with party goals as those of established political professionals. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS LIST OF TABLES AND FIGURES .................................................................................................................... | 2 | WHAT TO WATCH IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS With polls predicting a possible “blue wave”, the 2018 mid-term elections bring with them the potential to dramatically reshape the legislative landscape. For environmental issues, this means an opportunity to advance real policy solutions. But with a potentially divided Congress and an indifferent-to-hostile administration, what pro- environment policies will be on the table? At Waxman Strategies, we are preparing and planning for the many possible outcomes of this election. Given the importance of this year’s election, we wanted to share some of our insights on the bellwether races to watch, what we are expecting could happen in the 116th Congress and the environmental policy issues we are following. | 3 | THE RACES WE’RE FOLLOWING We’ve selected five House races and five Senate races that we see as election night bellwethers. I’m going to take my job seriously, but I don’t think I’m the first Hispanic woman elected to Congress.’ And she goes, ‘Oh, trust me, we’ve done our research, you are.’ That’s how I found out I was the first Hispanic woman elected to Congress. How did it take that long to elect a Latina to Congress? Wow! And now, I’m so proud to see so many other Latinas elected to Congress. So, the world has shifted a lot, but I always felt a sense of obligation that I was representing not just the Cuban-American community, but women as well, and Latina women especially.” Ileana Ros-Lehtinen April 16, 2018 Table of Contents Interview Abstract i Interviewee Biography i Editing Practices ii Citation Information ii Interviewer Biographies iii Interview 1 Notes 45 Abstract In 1960, at the age of eight, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and her family fled their native land of Cuba and made a new home in Miami, Florida. • Can Celebrate Earth Day by Joining Bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus
MEDIA PACKET Rep. [LAST NAME] can celebrate Earth Day by joining bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus With each natural disaster made worse by climate change, whether devastating wildfires in California or biblical floods in Houston, more and more Americans see the need to reduce the heat-trapping gases that are heating up our world. But with the current administration dismantling any and all initiatives to address climate change, and with Congress missing in action for the better part of a decade, the public is left to wonder if our government will ever act to reduce the significant threat that climate change poses to our nation and the rest of the world. Hope for climate action in Congress Hope for such action, however, is emerging with the growth of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus in the House of Representatives. Two years ago, two Florida congressmen — Republican Carlos Curbelo and Democrat Ted Deutch — came together with a radical idea: What if we created a judgment-free zone where Democrats and Republicans could get together and have civil, informed conversations about climate change with the aim of finding common ground for effective solutions? And with that, the Climate Solutions Caucus was launched in February 2016. In order to be truly bipartisan, Curbelo and Deutch decided the caucus would have equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats. A member of Congress joining the caucus must have a member from the other party joining with them. Today, the caucus has 72 members — half Republicans and half Democrats. For those wondering how 36 Republicans ended up on the Climate Solutions Caucus, the answer is pretty simple: Our democracy, despite what many cynics may think, actually works.
