World League's best setter dismissed from Brazil's volleyball 16:35, July 23, 2007 Brazil men's volleyball team coach Bernardo Rezende dismissed setter Ricardo Garcia, one week after they won the FIVB World League and two days before their debut in the Pan American Games on Monday. According to Rezende, the relationships between members of the group are becoming "worn out". Then, he decided to prevent Garcia from playing the Games in order to interrupt such process. "The dismissal might harm the team, but it (also) might do well in the future," said the head coach. Rezende added that the decision was taken in Europe, when the national team was returning to Brazil. When Garcia arrived for practice in Rio de Janeiro, he was notified of it. The player said to be surprised and sad with the situation, and ensured that his teammates do not support the coach in his decision. He revealed that some misunderstandings did take place before the World League finals in Poland, "but nothing very serious." He stressed that the incidents were part of the routine of a group that has been together for practically seven years, "like a family". Rezende took over his position as coach in 2001. Since then, the team has won six World League titles, two FIVB Word Championship titles and a gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics. To Garcia's position, the manager drafted Bruno Rezende, his son, who currently plays as setter for Brazilian team Cimed. Garcia, who was awarded with the best setter prize in the 2007 League, said that he longed for his participation in the Pan America Games, especially because they are being held in Rio and, if Brazil wins the gold, it will be one of the few missing in his career. The 31 year-old player also expected to, after that, join the squad for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and, "maybe" the 2010 World Championship, which will be held in Italy, where he plays for team Modena. But he now admits to be unsure whether he will ever be drafted to the team again. The head coach, however, said that the door is still open to the player. "If I come to the conclusion that I took the wrong decision, I have no trouble apologizing. I have to do what is right," Rezende said. Source: Xinhua .
