Please note that these Guidelines are not a license or legal document and do not conirm whether or not an activity infringes any IP rights in relation to the 2021 Big Brother Naija reality TV show. We regret that MultiChoice Nigeria cannot provide individual feedback on each potential use of its content. This is most important when considered that said IP infringement may result in a loss of your social media handles and channels. In this vein, we outline the dos and don’ts of the use of our BBNaija content on all platforms (inclusive of web, social media and more). This also covers the actions that may be taken by MultiChoice in the advent of any identiied breaches. The following is intended to guide media practitioners including bloggers and Social Media inluencers in their reportage of the Big Brother Naija reality show. It covers all forms of Social Media, including Instagram,YouTube, Facebook, other social networking sites and other internet postings, including news websites and blogs. 7 GUIDELINES FOR REPORTING BBNAIJA ON SOCIAL MEDIA MultiChoice Nigeria respects the desire of the media to post content it feels worthy and in line with its reputation. Equally, MultiChoice Nigeria has a right to protect its image and intellectual property. The following statements are guiding principles that apply to all media when engaging with our BBNaija content on Social Media: 1. Media are not allowed to LIVE-stream the show on TV from any mobile phone or hand-held device either directly or via any Social Media live applications including YouTube 2. Media are not allowed to record and publish over one minute of the show on any social media platform. 3. Media are prohibited from making any call for fans, viewers or followers to watch live or recorded footage of the show on their Social Media platforms. For non-media platforms, you must indicate that the page is a fan page. 8 4. Images can be sourced from the Africa Magic website and all oicial Social Media pages of BigBrotherNaija, DStv, GOtv and AfricaMagic. Images can also be obtained from the BBNaija media guide website. Image/Video sources should always be credited. 5. Media are encouraged to use oicial hashtag of the show #BBNaija and any additional hashtag as communicated per time 6.     MULTICHOICE GROUP DELIVERS RESILIENT INTERIM RESULTS Johannesburg, 12 November 2020: MultiChoice Group (MCG, or the group), Africa’s leading video entertainment company, delivered resilient financial results for the six months ended 30 September 2020 (1H FY21). The group added 1.2m 90-day active subscribers year-on-year (YoY), to close the period on 20.1m households, exceeding the 20m subscriber milestone for the first time. The customer base is split between 11.4m households (57%) in the Rest of Africa (RoA) and 8.7m (43%) in South Africa. Core headline earnings were up 41% on the prior period at R2.7bn, with the strong growth attributable to a 38% improvement in organic trading profit and lower net realised foreign exchange losses. The trading profit impact of COVID-19 was largely neutral, as a R0.9bn revenue loss relating to lower advertising income and subscription revenues from commercial customers was offset by R0.8bn in delayed content costs. “Despite operating in a challenging environment and being affected by lockdowns, production stoppages and disruptions to live sport, we delivered on all key metrics,” says Calvo Mawela, MCG Chief Executive Officer. “A strong focus on cost reduction allowed for a further R1bn in cost savings during the period. We also narrowed the losses in the Rest of Africa by 59% year-on-year (or R0.5bn) to R338m.” Revenue increased 2% (-1% organic) to R26.1bn, with subscription revenues of R22.2bn increasing a solid 5% (3% organic) YoY. Top line momentum was significantly impacted by COVID-19. From inception, the show has attracted wide condemnation over acts of indecency and immorality among the housemates, while some audiences feel the program still has some benefits to the housemates, the audiences and Nigeria as a whole. Consequently, the call for ban of the program in some quarters as well as the support for the survival of same places the audience of the show in a dilemma. The objectives of this paper include to ascertain the benefits or values of the Big Brother Naijaprogramme to the housemates and audiences and to determine the audiences’ position on the survival or proscription of the show. This study is supported by a framework of Uses and Gratification Theory and the Social Learning Theory. Under the quantitative research method employed in this study, the survey design was adopted for a sample population of 460 respondents. Findings show that audiences largely accept that the show has value to the social and economic status of the housemates with little value to educational and emotional needs of the audience despite its fairly significant entertainment value.More respondents agreed to the indecent and corrupt nature of the Big BrotherNaija with a little more than of half of the population calling for its ban.

Indeed, the drama and controversy sur- rounding the show, particularly the recently concluded season, has been second to none. This article briefly reviews the recent landmark ruling of the New South Wales Workers Compensation Commission in Aus- tralia1 (“the Commission”) which in essence, redefined the relationship between a reality show network and its contestant. In the ruling, the Commission ordered the payment of compensation to the contestant for psychological/ psychiatric injury suffered in the course of the engagement. The article further considers the likely impact of the ruling on, arguably, the most popular reality TV show in Nigeria. The advent of the Internet, new media technologies and inter- country media systems have greatly aided the compression of the globe and drastically reduced the barrier of space and time. A very crucial feature of this globalized era is the increased exchange of media products and cultural content among countries. However, scholars have pointed out the spate of inequality in global information flow. The new world information and communication order tends to be in favour of the developed countries to the detriment of the developing ones. This is manifested in the spate of media dependency for content and technology on developed spheres of the globe by the developing ones. The technological development of the Northern hemisphere gives them ample opportunity for massive production of media content which are massively exported to the southern hemisphere. The implication of this is the high exposure to the culture of the developed nations, because media content carries with it the culture of where it was produced. The high exposure tends to bring about cultural crisis in the developing nations with people preferring the constantly mediated culture to the indigenous culture. The Big Brother Naija reality TV show was recently produced and aired in South Africa. Even though it was a Nigeria-based show, the sponsor chose South Africa as a result of quality infrastructure that would guarantee quality delivery.

Jerushah Mass Communication Programme, Bowen University Iwo, Osun State Abstract Commercials, as communication tactics, focus on convincing consumers to buy a product. They become persuasive when using various means to attract the attention of the target audience, creating interests and encouraging the final action of purchase. Television commercials have the potency to influence audience. To examine this influence, this study adopted the widely viewed Big Brother Naija show in the bid to understand the persuasive effects of the show’s adverts on its audiences. The study was conducted through a questionnaire survey. The purposive and inferential sampling techniques were used to select a sample of 200 University of Lagos 475 Idia: Journal of Mass Communication, Igbinedion University, Okada IJMC Volume 5, 2020 students, who the show in the 2019 season. Findings indicate that Big Brother Naija reality show, contributes largely to the reception of an advertised product, as some will only buy a product because it was advertised on their favourite TV show. Findings also indicate that TV commercials generally have influence on the purchase of a product as against other media. This study recommends that advertisers should adopt techniques and appeals in TV commercials that increase their persuasiveness and appeal to the audience. This paper surveyed deeply into the political arena of Nigeria and the world’s perception about Nigeria’s current state as well as the leaders’ attitude since 1960 till date. This paper traced the historical emergence of the nation called Nigeria right from the first appearance of the British moguls in the year 1861. The roles played by the Royal Niger Company in capturing protectorates, how Lagos was discovered and became first settlement of the Whiteman was revealed. The paper further traced how this marriage called Nigeria came to be. The invitation of an army actor Frederick Lord Lugard in 1800’s for protection of the Northern protectorates against French invasion and the fight against jihadists as well as slave trade abolition by the Islamic empires was harnessed. How the presence of a British respected journalist Flora Shaw who later became the wife of Lugard changed the system with her formation of the name Nigeria after tributaries of sailors was discussed. The paper reviewed the contributions of all the Nigerian leaders from 1861 to 2019.
