Forewing underside orange, excepting beige tips. Upright fusiform eggs, about 4.7 mm. long and 1.5 mm wide, laid by the female’s extensible ovipositor between mid-June and mid-October. Fertile eggs pink, laid among palm crown fi bres, at the base of leaf rachis. -

Chemical Defence of the Warningly Coloured Caterpillars of Methona Themisto (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Ithomiinae)

The caterpillars of the butterfly Methona themisto (Nymphalidae: Ithomiinae) are conspicuously coloured and feed exclu- sively on Brunfelsia uniflora (Solanaceae), a plant that is rich in secondary plant substances, which suggests the caterpillars are chemically protected against predators. Results of experiments indicate that predators determine the survival of Methona themisto caterpillars in the field and laboratory bioassays that this organism is eaten by ants and spiders but not chicks. Both the conspicuous orange and black striped colouration and chemical compounds of Methona themisto caterpillars seem to be related to protection against predation by visually hunting predators. Chicks ate proportionally more of the cryptically coloured 1st instar caterpillars than of the conspicuously coloured later instar caterpillars. That Methona themisto caterpillars are chemically defended is supported by the activity of the dichloromethanic extract of 5th instars in preventing predation by chicks. Caterpillars of Methona themisto are apo- sematic as they are both (1) unpalatable, and (2) their warning signal is easily recognized by potential predators. Chicks learned to avoid the aposematic 3rd or 5th instar caterpillars after one encounter. Mealworms painted to look like caterpillars were also rejected by chicks that had previously encountered Methona caterpillars. -

Part I* presented data for 86 species of the families Papilionidae, Pieridae, Nymphalidae in part (Danainae, Heliconiinae, Nymphalinae, Libytheinae) and Hesperiidae, whereas Part III will include the family Lycaenidae. It includes the description of one new species and three new subspecies, two new records for Chile, and several nomenclatorial changes. Data on regional distribution (D) and, for the first time, flight periods (FP) and conservation status (C) are included. Many butterfly species occurring in Chile are of special concern for conservation. Several have already apparently disappeared from their biotopes. The fast pace of economic development inducing anthropogenic habitat changes and the loss of natural habitats are endangering the populations of these insects. -

In order to obtain a hypothesis of relationships, we used maximum parsimony and model-based methods with 4435 bp of DNA sequences from mitochondrial and nuclear genes for 179 taxa (130 genera and eight out-groups). We estimated dates of origin and diversification for major clades, and performed a biogeographic analysis using a dispersal–vicariance framework, in order to infer a scenario of the biogeographical history of the group. We found long-branch taxa that affected the accuracy of all three methods. Moreover, different methods produced incongruent phylogenies. We found that Satyrini appeared around 42 Mya in either the Neotropical or the Eastern Palaearctic, Oriental, and/or Indo-Australian regions, and underwent a quick radiation between 32 and 24 Mya, during which time most of its component subtribes originated. Several factors might have been important for the diversification of Satyrini: the ability to feed on grasses; early habitat shift into open, non-forest habitats; and geographic bridges, which permitted dispersal over marine barriers, enabling the geographic expansions of ancestors to new environ- ments that provided opportunities for geographic differentiation, and diversification. -

The tribe Gazerini as previously delimited was found to be paraphyletic with respect to the genera Ceretes, Divana, Riechia, Frostetola, and Oiticicastnia. The genera Castnia, Geyeria, and Athis were also found to be non-monophyletic taxa. The mimicry pattern had multiple independent origins in the Neotropical castniids, and at least two lineages, Riechia and Prometheus, are involved in Batesian mimicry rings with unpalatable butterfly models in the tribes Acraeini and Heliconiini (Nymphalidae). We propose for Castniini 13 new synonymies and 27 new combinations. Geyeria strigata (Walker, 1854) is revalidated. RESUMEN. Se colectaron nueve ejemplares pertenecientes a dos especies de la familia Castniidae: Athis delecta (Shaus, 1911) (un ejemplar) fue registrada en vegetación de Matorral y Athis inca oriza- bensis (Strand, 1913) (ocho ejemplares) en Selva baja subcaducifolia con elementos de Encino y Bosque mesófilo. Athis delecta representa un nuevo registro para Tamaulipas, mientras que la segunda especie se reafirma para Tamaulipas, pero es nuevo registro para Querétaro. The taxonomic knowledge of this family is limited mainly because they are very rare in natural ecosystems, their endemism, small geographical distribution, scarcity of specimens in scientific collections (Miller 1972, González & Fernández-Yépez 1993, Lamas 1993), and also there are limited studies on the group. Castniid moths are medium to large in size, from 20 to 110 mm; they are related to Cossidae and Hesperiidae, the distal portion of the antenna is similar to that of the Hesperiidae with a club and apiculus and the presence of three cubital veins on the wings. Few species are dimorphic in coloration although both sexes are similar in appearance (Miller 2000). At present almost 90 species belonging to 33 genera are recognized, even though some authors mention up to 106 different species (Lamas 1995, Miller 2000, González et al.
