    ELOY – „The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre“ (Part 1) Interview mit Frank Bornemann Frage1: Ein großes Konzeptwerk zum Thema Jeanne d´Arc schwebt Dir ja schon lange vor. Geäußert hast Du das schon zu Beginn der Neunziger Jahre. Warum hast Du solange damit gezögert? Frank: Weil es aus Zeitgründen einfach nie möglich war, mich früher in angemessener Weise so einer komplexen Aufgabe zu widmen. In den Neunzigern hatte ich als Produzent noch zahlreiche Auftragsproduktionen im eigenen Studio zu machen, entweder für diverse Plattenfirmen oder unseren Verlag. Zudem stand mit dem Album „The Tides return forever“ bei ELOY die Reunion von einer nunmehr wieder kompletten Band und eine Anniversary-Tour an, sowie der immer wieder glühend verlangte Nachfolger von „Ocean“, den unser damals neues Label GUN/BMG unbedingt haben wollte. In den 2000 er Jahren sah es mit Freiräumen für so ein großes Werk kaum besser aus. Allein, um in diesen Jahren beginnender Marktrezession als Produzent und Studioinhaber bestehen zu können, habe ich ohne Punkt und Komma viele Bands und Künstler produziert, und konnte erst am Ende dieses besonders turbulenten Jahrzehnts wieder daran denken, mich eigener Musik zu widmen. Frage2: Warum dann erst „Visionary“, und nicht gleich Jeanne d´Arc ? Frank: Weil ich zunächst unserer Fancommunity, die selbst nach dieser Riesenpause von 10 Jahren noch immer so vehement hinter der Band stand, sofort erst einmal wieder ein Bandalbum in Originalbesetzung präsentieren wollte, welches sich im Vergleich zu einer Rock Opera in kürzerer Zeit umsetzen ließ. Quasi als Antwort auf diese enorme Fantreue, aber auch als Dankesgeste für die bemerkenswerte Wertschätzung, die ELOY aus allen Teilen der Welt entgegen gebracht wird.

    Eloy – The Classic Years Trilogy (Vinyl – Boxset) (47:50; 44:10; 43:45, 3LP/CD, Universal/Vertigo, 1976-1979/201 9) Zur Freude vieler Eloy- und Vinyl-Fans veröffentlicht Universal dieser Tage das liebevoll gestaltete Boxset „The Classic Years“ der Hannoveraner Prog-Legende um Frank Bornemann. Die Alben „Dawn“, „Ocean“ und „Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes“ sind rückblückend sicher mit die bedeutesten Genre-Alben dieser Epoche aus deutschen Landen. International ähnlich erfolgreich waren damals allenfalls noch die Kölner Triumvirat. Erstaunlicherweise Weise war die Band spätestens ab dem Album „Ocean“ im eigenen Land andauernder Kritikerschelte ausgesetzt. Wie man aus den abgedruckten Band-Statments heraus lesen kann, hat das dem einen oder anderen Eloyer durchaus nachhaltig beschäftigt. Es mag ein wenig an denen in bestem Teutonen-Englisch vorgetragenen und bedeutungsschwangeren Lyrics gelegen haben, war vermutlich aber vor allem schlicht der Tatsache geschuldet, dass aus UK bereits ein anderer Wind über den Kanal wehte und der gemeine deutsche Musikjournalist eben auch hip sein wollte. Eloy mag sich damit trösten, dass auch Bands wie Genesis und Yes zu dieser Zeit bei dieser Berufs-Gattung nicht mehr hoch im Kurs stand. Die Geschichte hat das inzwischen sowieso zurecht gerückt, wie diese Veröffentlichung beweist. Es würde den Rahmen dieser Rezension sprengen, auf alle drei Alben detailliert einzugehen, aber jungen oder spätberufenen Prog-Entdeckern wird insbesondere auf „Ocean“ und „Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes“ musikalisch einiges geboten. Tastenmann Schmidtchen verwendete ein ähnliches Sound-Arsenal wie Richard Wright, was etliche Pink Floyd-Vergleiche nach sich zog. Klaus Peter Matziol (Bass) und Jürgen Rosenthal (Drums) bildeten ein ausgesprochen organisches Rhythmusgespann, das der Formation ein markanten eigenen Groove gab.
