Uncover Triglav National Park's natural and cultural wonders, with walks to beautiful waterfalls, natural gorges and traditional farming villages. Julian Alps - Varied walks over five days including taking the cable car to Mount Vogel for a high walk with panoramic vistas Lake Bohinj - Slovenia's largest glacial lake, a delightful base in a beautiful unspoilt setting Savica Waterfall - Spectacular waterfall, hidden amidst the steep walls of the Komarca Gorge Reiserute Day 1 Our trip begins at Ljubljana Jo z e Pu c nik Airport (LJU) at 10pm, the latest your flight can arrive is 9.30pm. You will need to arrive by this time to join the complimentary airport transfer today. We will travel together as a group to our hotel at Lake Bohinj will take approximately one hour . Lake Bohinj is situated 28 kilometres south of Lake Bled, set in Triglav National Park the vast blue-green waters are surrounded by spruce forest and the awesome Julian Alps. The lake is less developed, unspoilt and considered by many more beautiful than its northerly cousin. Arriving at Lake Bohinj we settle into our chalet-style hotel. Our comfortable base for the week is the family ran Hotel Kristal located a short walk from the lake. The hotel offers typical Slovenian hospitality with a welcoming lounge, sauna and garden. If your flight arrives earlier in the day, you may have time to wait ahead of our group transfer tour hotel at Lake Bohinji. You can make the most of this time by taking the airport bus into Ljubljana, Slovenia's laid back capital. The journey takes 45 minutes, there is luggage storage available at the main bus station on arrival into the city. This ancient city, which dates back to the 12th century, is located on the emerald green Ljubljanica River. It is a pedestrian friendly city, which has much to offer, the centre is traffic free with bicycles free of charge to use instead. Explore the old town with its museums and castle or soak up the cosmopolitan atmosphere in one of its many riverside cafes and restaurants. Day 2 Setting off from the hotel, we walk around the north side of Lake Bohinj on a gently undulating forest trail. When we reach the west end of the lake we follow the trail towards the Savica Waterfall, gradually climbing to 653 metres. The waterfall is fed by underground rivers hidden in the limestone karst; its impressive torrent is 78 metres high. We head back down towards the lake along the same path and you can either choose to walk back to the hotel following the lake trail or take a boat which runs from one end of the lake to the other (this is included). Today's easy 15 kilometre walk is expected to take approximately five-and-a-half hours with a total ascent and descent of 350 metres along good paths, some steps. Day 3 Today we take a half-hour bus ride to Milno on the shores of Lake Bled, from here we set off to explore the countryside around the lake. Our journey takes us on quiet paths through rolling country of forests, fields and villages. Finally a short but steep climb leads to a fantastic view point of the lake from afar. After lunch we return to the lake by a different route. Here where you can choose to extend the walk by going around the lake itself, or take the bus back to the hotel. Today's moderate 13 kilometre walk is expected to take approximately five-and-a-half hours with a total ascent and descent of 600 metres. Day 4 Today is a free day to relax around the hotel, you can hire bikes and/or kayaks from the lakeside or explore the region further. There is the option to take the public bus to Lake Bled where you can take a rowing boat out onto the lake to visit the castle or walk through the Vintgar Gorge. The gorge is 1,600 metres long, carved by the Ravnova River. There is a wooden walkway along the gorge which allows you to get as close as possible to nature; the walkway criss-crosses the river four times, hovering over waterfalls, rapids and pools. Today's optional 12 kilometre walk along the Vintgar Gorge is expected to take approximately four-and-a-half hours. Day 5 This morning we take a local bus along the Bohinj Valley to the village of Brod. We begin our walk heading over a low ridge, through woods, to find meadows filled with wildflowers on a plateau with farmland below. We descend through open country to reach the small farming villages of Srednja Vas, Studor and Stara Fuzina. There's time to explore these picturesque, traditional places before making our way back to Lake Bohinj, along farm tracks and quiet roads. Today's easy 11.5 kilometre walk is expected to take approximately five hours with a total ascent and descent of 375 metres along good paths and minor roads. Day 6 Today we take the Vogel cable car for a day of superb walking among the peaks of the Julian Alps. There are great views of the lake from top of cable car where we begin our walk to a cheese maker's hut in the valley. We follow mountain paths to the main Vogel ridge with views all the way to neighbouring Italy and the Adriatic coast. The rugged 'balcony' walk maintains height and mountain views, slowly leading back to the ski area from where we descend to the cable car. Today's moderate 10 kilometre walk is expected to take approximately six hours with a total ascent and descent of 680 metres, along some rough paths with brief steep climbs. Day 7 We walk from the hotel, through an attractive village, and then alongside a white-water river through beautiful sections of gorge. Passing a cafe in a hut we can take a break and sample some of the local cakes. We continue on through the Voje Valley with pastures and chalets. In May the area is carpeted with beautiful wild flowers with have fine views of steep hills and limestone outcrops enroute to Mostnica waterfall. The two kilometre long Mostnica Gorge is the most spectacular gorge in Bohinj. Carved out by the crystal clear Mostnica stream, it's only a few metres wide but its towering walls are 20 metres high. We head back along different paths with fabulous views through pastures, forest, riverside and village to reach the lake. Today's easy 16.5 kilometre walk is expected to take approximately seven and-a-half hours with a total ascent and descent of 350 metres along good paths. Day 8 On your final day you can either have free time to enjoy the many activities on the lake, or your trip Leader will offer a walk to Bohinjska Bistrica, getting the public bus back to the hotel. We will depart for Ljubljana Jo s e Pu c nik Airport (LJU) at 5pm to arrive about 6pm and this is where our trip ends. The earliest your flight can depart is 9pm. • Exploring Slovenia's Julian Alps and Beyond
Exploring Slovenia’s Julian Alps and Beyond Two Treks and Balkan Culture in an Undiscovered Corner of the Alps August 30, 2021 – September 13, 2021 – Trip #2167 Triglav National Park Overview Join us for a wonderful fifteen-day trip to the undiscovered hiking and scenic paradise of Slovenia. We will pass medieval castles, churches, and traditional mountain villages as we walk through valleys, across mountain pastures, and traverse mountain ridges with towering peaks all around us. This trip combines two rugged short treks (one carrying all our gear and staying in mountain huts, and the other staying in hotels with luggage transport), an exciting ascent to Slovenia’s highest peak, and visits to the most scenic and interesting regions of this small, but incredibly beautiful country. A few words about Slovenia itself: it is a small country located in southern central Europe at the intersection of major trade routes and of the Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages and cultures. Historically part of many empires including Rome, Austro-Hungarian, Venice, and France, it is currently a prosperous, democratic European country of two million persons. Over 50% of its landmass remains forested. It is exceptionally bio-diverse for its size particularly as pertains to endemic cave species. Slovenia’s Place in Europe Trip Difficulty This trip is rated strenuous #6. Trip Rating System. Excluding breaks we will hike from five to seven hours per day, between 6 and 14 miles, with an average elevation gain of about 2500 feet. The terrain is rugged and steep in places, and requires agility. There will be sections on narrow trails with exposure (steep drop-offs).

  • Slovenia: August 2016
Slovenia: August 2016 When we told folks we were going to Slovenia, the first question was “where is Slovenia” and second was “why go to Slovenia?” The answer to the first question is easy: Slovenia lies east of Italy across the Adriatic Sea, south of Austria, southwest of Hungary, and west/northwest of Croatia. As to “why Slovenia?” … why not? A write-up in Mountain Travel Sobek’s (MTS) catalog of a trip called Hiking Slovenia’s Julian Alps sparked our interest so we signed up for their August 2016 trip. Linda and Brian, our friends from Denver and alumni of joint past MTS trips to Iceland (2013) and the Tour du Mont Blanc (2015), signed up as well. Figuring this might be our only opportunity to visit Slovenia (it’s not exactly ‘on the way’ to other European destinations), the four of us decided to spend a few days in country before the official start of the MTS trip. Thus, this write-up is divided into 2 parts: In & Around Ljubljana and Hiking Slovenia’s Julian Alps. Historically, the current territory of Slovenia was part of many different state formations, including the Roman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, followed by the Habsburg Monarchy. In October 1918, the Slovenes exercised self-determination for the first time by co-founding the internationally unrecognized State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. The Slovenians mostly wanted to be with Germany and Austria, but merged that December with the Kingdom of Serbia into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (renamed Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929).

............................................................ MOUNTAIN BIKING LOOP JULIANA BIKE IS PART OF THE SLOVENIAN MOUNTAIN BIKING ROUTE According to the example of the Slovenian Alpine Trail, the Alpine Association of Slovenia designed and opened the Slovenian Mountain Biking Route in 2O16, which with 18OO km in some way encircles Slovenia. The Julian Alps are also part of it and this new loop surrounds them as well. The stages of the Slovenian Mountain Biking Route that embrace our largest mountain range, are integrated in the Julian Alps protected area, i.e. UNESCO – Man and Biosphere, offering a unique opportunity that connects and creates a pan-Slovenian loop. Its route is practically identical to the Slovenian Mountain Biking Route, however, its starting and finishing stages have been relocated to populated places or tourist centres of the Julian Alps region.
