Each year the council holds it Annual General Meeting at which the The council unanimously elected the new Mayor, Councillor Neville new Mayor is appointed. During his inaugural AGM, but with a major change. speech, Councillor Birch spoke of his sense of honour at being elected a mayor. He had been brought up in Garnett Street adjoining the For the first time since the inception of this council in the mid 1970’s Civic Centre and said that it was almost unbelievable to him that from it expanded from 15 to 20 town councillors. The Boundary being a child in the shadow of the Centre that he should now be Town Commission, a government body, had determined after the last Mayor. He promised to faithfully execute his duty on behalf of all the election in 2003 that the council needed to expand to meet the people of Otley and was warmly welcomed by all attending the national average of per capita representation by each councillor. meeting. Following the election on 3rd May, the town council had not only grown but had a new political complexion. Of the 20 councillors, 17 are Liberal Democrats, one is labour, one Annual Parish Meeting Conservative and 1 Independent. Their individual contact details are Following the AGM the Town held its Annual Parish (Town) elsewhere in this news letter. Naturally, with such a change there a Meeting. Honorary Citizens Earlier in the Council year the council had sought and received nominations for new Honorary Citizens. Although the election of the Honorary Citizens had taken place well before the Annual General Meeting the names had been kept discreet. At the end of the formal business of the AGM the Mayor Councillor Neville Birch announced that it was his pleasant duty to announce the names of those appointed. They are: Mrs Irene Willis, Mrs Hazel Winpenny and Mrs Audrey Cartwright.

The Mayor presented each of the new Honorary Citizens with a certificate recording the elected and their names have been added to the Honour Board on the main stairs in the Civic Centre.

Honorary Citizenship is the highest mark of respect that the Town Council can award so the standard of contribution by those elected to the community is equally high. Each Honorary Citizens has worked selflessly for the community and the town owes them a considerable debt of gratitude. Without their tireless efforts Otley could not be the community which it is and all would be the poorer.

Formed in 1958 we will celebrate our 50th anniversary in good heart knowing that through our players, parents and helpers we will continue to provide a sporting chance for young people.

The facilities and organisation of our club are state of the art, as recognised by the award of the FA’s Charter Standard club award. This means that the club has been audited by the FA to ensure that not only are the coaches qualified (to both level 1 & level 2 standard) and CRB checked, but that the club has the right ethos in which to promote the best that football has to offer.

We play in local leagues throughout the season and many tournaments in the summer, we are very fortunate to have a well equipped club house with changing rooms, showers, kitchen and function room providing refreshments and shelter if needed.

These beautiful insects have their savage side. They are predators of smaller insects like flies, mosquitoes and midges. They catch them, slice off their wings and devour their prey often while still in flight.

The adults we see are in their final few weeks of life. They will already have spent several years as larvae beneath the water developing slowly and lying in wait to ambush tadpoles, small fish, snails and other insect larvae.

Look at these tiny predators flashing past and think what you might have made of their mighty ancestors 300 million years ago, flying towards you at 40 mph on two foot wide wings!

The Rotary Club of Otley Chevin Otley’s evening Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Otley Chevin is the younger of Otley’s two Rotary Clubs and was founded in 1989. The Club is active in the community and always welcomes suggestions of where it may be able to help. We have been assisting Lineham Farm over a number of years giving them hands-on help with their maintenance and with their own fund raising open days. We conduct an annual ‘Stroke Awareness’ day outside Waitrose in conjunction with the Stroke Association and at this year’s event in April we tested the blood pressure of over 140 people and recommended 14 see their GP, one with particularly high blood pressure. In the international field, we react to needs following catastrophes like the Tsunami and the South Asian earthquake. Thankfully the need has been less in the past year, however we have contributed to the re-building of a school in Sri Lanka – to be named the Yorkshire School – and there will be an Otley Classroom. It is hoped to forge links between school children in Otley and Poole with children in the new school after it opens in September. Rotary’s long standing Polio Plus campaign to eradicate polio worldwide continues to receive our support and a recent concert by the Chippendale Singers for us raised £750 for Polio Plus. We also take part in providing practical assistance to Rotary Peace Scholars from overseas while they are studying at University.

The Club meets on a Monday evening at the Chevin Lodge Country Park Hotel at 7 30 pm and is always very glad to welcome visitors who might be interested in joining us. For more details get in touch with David Lewis on 01943 877720 See our web site on: www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/officers.asp?ClubID=1663. 2007 100 Years of Scouting

Aireborough and Otley Pensioners Association When a very small group of local pensioners met to form the Aireborough and Otley Pensioners Association just 22 years further develops campaign which had much earlier beginnings. The first state pensions in Britain were introduced in 1908 and provided for 70 years olds a princely sum of between one and five shillings a week- a maximum of 25p in today’s money. But by no means were all 70 years olds entitled to it. To qualify they had to show that they were not convicted criminals; had not been “habitually employed” had lived in Britain for last 12 years and had virtually nothing else to live on. Anyone with an income of over 10 shillings a week got nothing.Legislation came in response to growing Union-led agitation against appalling 19th century conditions. Space does not allow a fuller description of the 10 year struggle and some of the leading figures who worked and sacrificed to support the demand for a weekly pension. When Lloyd George is given credit for this great reform it is rare that this 10 year campaign of ordinary people is mentioned. The local group has taken part in many campaigns over the past 22 years, but the climax was reached in October 1986 when a delegation went to parliament with a petition of no less than 8,575 signatures- a figure representing really hard work and dedication from many members. The local press backed the association’s campaigns with regular long reports, including photographs which deserve to be seen again if technically possible. Today’s pensioners are still way behind most of those in Europe and it is hoped that many younger pensioners will join the association helping the older members to initiate and develop new campaigns. Our meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 2.15 in the Aged Peoples welfare Centre, Crossgates, Otley (next to bus station) For further details contact Celsus Warde 01943 464429

These are doing well competitive. Both are pictured being congratulated by Club Coach Paul (Their Yorkshire population has increased by 150% over the last 10 years.) Hickman (centre). perhaps because most do not migrate further than southern Europe with some even overwintering in Britain. Later, in April, come willow warblers, almost identical in appearance to chiffchaffs but with a completely different song. They have fallen significantly in numbers (down 20% in Yorkshire over the last 10 years), probably because their migration takes them much further south, across the Sahara into tropical west Africa on a journey which becomes more and more hazardous as the desert expands and the sub-Saharan region is increasingly gripped by drought. The increasing dangers of their migration route may also explain the fall in numbers of the least common of the three, the wood warbler, which arrives in late April or early May after wintering right across sub-Saharan Africa. Twenty years ago they were to be found in the valleys of the Calder, Aire, Wharfe and Washburn and could be heard singing on Otley Chevin. Their last remaining stronghold has been Bolton Abbey Woods but even there the population has fallen (down 50% nationally over the last 10 years). Unless they can adapt to a pace of climate change faster than has ever been seen previously then the wood warbler may vanish forever from Yorkshire woods, perhaps to be followed in the longer term by the willow warbler. MAKE A DIFFERENCE Yorkshire woodlands without their usual birdsong would be sadder places.

WESTON ESTATE COMMUNITY DAY: HAVE YOUR SAY

Saturday 14 July is the date set for a major community consultation for the Weston / Newall area of Otley. The venue for the day is Otley Social Club on Weston Drive. The aims of the day are: • to celebrate the community and its history in an enjoyable way for all ages, including food and entertainment • to consult people about what is good and bad in the community and what they would like to happen • to give people a chance to find out more about a whole range of services available to the community – from football to fire prevention, from play group to daycare for the elderly

The area we are focusing on is the Weston Estate and eastwards to Newall Carr road (i.e including Newall Avenue, the Oval and Croft Avenue). Children from Ashfield School have made a large model of the area, which will be the central display of the day. alborg Commitments
