2016 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Friends and Supporters, 2016 was a year of change and growth for the Jacksonville Humane Society. Thanks to the support of friends like you, it was another successful year for JHS and the animals in Jacksonville. Together with our partners, we sustained no kill status for the city of Jacksonville even while our shelter was under construction for our brand new building which will open in summer of 2017! Construction brought great hope, but also presented challenges at JHS. We were committed to staying open to serve our community’s homeless pets and families in need. Although we had to demolish 50 of our dog kennels, by working with many amazing partners, including Petco Foundation and PetSmart Charities, we took our adoptions team off-site and were able to help make almost as many happy homes as we did last year! Our commitment to being a resource for pets and the people who love them did not waiver, either. Thanks to friends like you, JHS is also a place where families can find: Pet care resources, such as food and veterinary care, via our Pet Safety Net program Free pet behavior assistance from our trained staff Humane education for youth and adults Quality, affordable veterinary care at our animal hospital Volunteer opportunities, including a youth program and foster care program We were determined to continue our life-saving work, despite any challenges that construction (and a hurricane!) brought our way. Your support made our goal a reality. We cannot wait to open the doors to the JHS Adoption, Education and Community Resource Center in 2017. Generosity breeds joy. Now -- let’s finish this puppy! Big Cats Helping Little Cats...and Dogs! We are grateful for our partnership with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jaguars play- ers, and the Jaguars Foundation. They provided financial support, adopted from JHS, fed baby kittens, visited with Pawsitive Readers to encourage their com- mitment to reading and helped make Toast to the Animals and Mutt March a huge success. We’re their Number 1 Fans! Go Jags!! We partner with organizations across Jacksonville to benefit our community including: K9s for Warriors NF School for Y S T Special Education University of Florida I R N E Girl Scout & Boy University of North Florida U N Scout Troops Jacksonville University T M R M Tiger Academy Hubbard House A O P The Bridge The Jacksonville Zoo C United Way Keeping Families Together Scott Murphy, a local DJ, is no stranger to JHS. He’s been keeping guests at our Mutt March and Toast to the Animals events movin’ and groovin’ for years! So, when Scott suddenly had a stroke in December of 2016 and was unable to work, he sent an email asking if we could help him find a new home for his beloved pets so he could find a new place to live. Thanks to the generous support of our donors and our partnership with Pet Paradise, we were able to safely board three of Scott’s pets – Murphy, the German Shepherd, Big Boy, the 15-year-old Hemingway cat and Precious, the persnickety domestic short hair kitty. When Scott was back on his feet and in a new home that would allow pets, we were able to reunite him with his three buddies. He is now on the road to recovery with Murphy, Big Boy and Precious right by his side. “Having my pets with me has helped me to heal,” Scott shared. “They know when I’m in pain and when I need comfort. They are my family.” We would like to offer our most sincere thanks to the following donors whose support helps us to keep people and their pets together: Banfield Foundation, Bernice Barbour Foundation, Florida Blue Foundation, Scott MacKenzie & Jerry Cruz, Pet Paradise, Wells Fargo Foundation, Walmart Foundation Record Breaking Generosity Giving Tuesday is a world-wide day of giving that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year, Giving Tuesday gave us the opportunity to reflect on how much pets give to our lives and how JHS gives back to families who love their pets. We set our goal at $35,000 in one day and were blown away when an anonymous donor offered to match up to $10,000! Our compassionate community did not let us down – $51,173.25 was donated ! Camp Paw Prints Goes Wild! Due to construction on our property, we were unable to host Camp Paw Prints in 2016. Luckily, our friends at the Jacksonville Zoo opened their doors to JHS and we were able to partner together to provide humane education to zoo campers ages 5-14. The children participated in many activities including making “Adopt Me” bandanas for dogs in our care, learning how to meet and interact with dogs, pet responsibility, and compassion for all animals. This partnership allowed JHS to continue our promise to provide the community with humane education for children. 2016 Capital Campaign Donors Thank You For Helping Us To Build Our New Home $1,000,000 or more $250,000 or more Boyd Family Lee & Dorothy Thomas Michael Munz The Chartrand Foundation Mitchell Family Michael Ward Foundation David & Linda Stein Petco Foundation Petway Family Foundation $50,000 or more J. Soon our shelter was flooded with loving families clamoring for the chance to care for one of our dogs or cats during the storm. The generosity of our community overwhelmed us -- every single dog and cat was placed into foster care in 24 hours.
