ROINN COSANTA. BUREAU OF MILITARY HISTORY, 1913-21. STATEMENT BY WITNESS. 1620 DOCUMENT NO. W.S. Witness John Timony, James Connolly St., Ballina, Co. Mayo. Identity. Capt., Crossmolina Coy., Irish Volunteers, Co. Mayo. Subject. Crossmolina Company, Irish Volunteers, Co. Mayo, 1917 21. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil. File No S.2944 Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENT BY MR. JOHN TIMONY James Connolly St., Ballina. I was born and reared in crossmolina in the Co. Mayo. My father was a farmer and my mother's maiden name was Keating. I remember my grandfather, who was a Fenian, telling us all about the French landing at Kilcummin in Killala Bay. He then lived at Lahardane where a number of the local Irish joined the French army. I don't think it is generally known that Humbert split his army shortly after landing, sending one force to Castlebar via Crossmolina arid Lahardane and the Windy Gap, and the other body went through Ballina and Foxford. to Castlebar. Two granduncles of mine joined up with Humbert at Lahardane and a large number of local people, under Father Conroy, C.C. of Lahardane, who was later captured by the English and hanged in Castlebar. The English suffered defeat all along the way of both. forces and at Castlebar were completely routed, and it is still called the Castlebar Races. Humbert then moved his complete army through Swinford to Collooney where he met and defeated a large English army outside the. town. He afterwards moved on to Dromohair by-passing Sligo, which is hard to explain, as there was an English garrison there which did not come out.

Since then we have had a whirlwind of change. Many have faced disappointments and great challenges. Still others find that the normality of their lives has been upended. For too many, illness they have already been living with has been complicated, and great numbers have struggled with or are suffering from COVID-19. We have not been able to give loved ones who have died in these times the funerals we would like to have arranged for them. Those working in what have been classed as ‘essential services’, especially those in all branches of healthcare, are working in a new normality that is at the limit of human endurance. Most of us are being asked to make our contribution by heeding the message: ‘Stay at home’ These are traumatic times for everyone.

GardenThe Heritage of COUNTY LAOIS GardenThe Heritage of COUNTY LAOIS housands of gardeners have passed through Laois. They include Stone Age farmers, medieval monks, cottage holders, great landowners and Laois men 4like Noel Keenan, who transformed a cow paddock into his vision of paradise. This brochure invites you to explore the gardening heritage of Laois. It includes descriptions of five gardens open to the public. The final pages mention just a few of the plants that generations of gardeners have left behind in the county’s private gardens, hedgerows and on its roadsides. Three men had a great influence on the gardens of County Laois. In the late 1800s, William Robinson worked as the garden foreman at Ballykilcavan. After a quarrel with his employer, Robinson put out the fires that heated the glasshouses and opened all the windows. Then he fled in the night. He never again worked in Ireland, but the Irish landscape and its gardens had a deep influence upon him. In England, Robinson scorned “floral rugs” and championed a more natural style of gardening. He is largely responsible for way most gardens look today. From 1908 until the foundation of the State in 1922, avid plant collector Murray Hornibrook made his home at Knapton House near Abbeyleix. He travelled from the wilds of Connemara to the walled gardens of the great houses, looking for interesting garden plants. Although Hornibrook is best known for his collection of dwarf conifers, several modern garden plants are propagated largely because he took note of them. In recent years, the county’s most influential plantsman was the late Noel Keenan.
