2 A Message from Our October 2018

My dear friends in Christ,

I am pleased to share with you our 2018 Annual Report of the Diocese of Joliet Catholic Education Foundation. Through your generosity the foundation has continued to experience increasing success since 1996.

Since its inception, the foundation has disbursed over $22 million to our schools in the form of tuition assistance benefitting 17,000 students. There are few dioceses in this country that can boast of such an enviable record of achievement made available by its parishioners.

I also acknowledge another important area of Foundation assistance this past year including annual grants for the continuing education of our school teachers and parish catechists. Indeed, the Diocese of Joliet is blessed to be able to undertake such an effort with the help of benefactors from our and the civic community for the direct benefit of our children - the future of our parishes and civic community.

I pray that God will continue to shine His blessings upon you and your family.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet A Message from Our Board Chair Dear Friends of the Catholic Education Foundation:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), it is my pleasure to present our 2018 Annual Report.

The CEF continues to be successful in spreading the word of our vital ministry to parishes, donors and the business community. And I would like to express our deep gratitude and appreciation to all who support the vital work of the Catholic Education Foundation. With the help of our benefactors, we have again this year recognized record growth in the number of students who receive aid.

Of course, the number of student applicants with qualified need outpaces our CEF fundraising by a factor of more than two to one. This past year. The CEF had 1,676 students receive nearly $2.2 million in aid. However, the CEF had 3,823 applications with a demonstrated need of $10.6 million. Our goal is to help everyone get a Catholic Education who wants one.

Despite that we had a record number of benefactors last year, more help is always needed. We pray that you will continue to help us in our efforts! And never has our mission been more important. At a time when the benefits of Catholic Education are clear and even vital to the youth of our country, Catholic Schools are closing in large numbers across our land. We encourage your participation and welcome your partnership by contributing to the annual CEF Scholarship Campaign or by utilizing other giving options listed in this Annual Report. The federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 has made the gift option of Family Donor Advised Scholarship Funds much more attractive.

Last, I remain truly grateful to our dedicated board members whose valuable input and financial support has helped grow our foundation each year. As always, we appreciate their time and talent to steer our Foundation as well as their financial investment in our CEF Scholars this year. Sincerely,

October 2018

Dear CEF Supporters and Friends,

There were two exciting opportunities that affected charitable giving throughout the country and the State of in 2017. By God’s grace and dedicated benefactors and volunteers, the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) benefited from these historical milestones.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 was the most comprehensive federal tax reform effort in over 30 years. For a variety of reasons the new law made Donor Advised Funds and Qualified Minimum Distributions from Individual Retirement Accounts even more appealing. The CEF recognized an increase in both of these charitable gift options. The CEF has been energetically promoting these gift vehicles in recent years.

The other significant event was the ratification of the Invest in Kids Act by the state General Assembly in the Fall. It made Illinois the 31st state that would provide school tax credits which enabled struggling families to enroll their students in Catholic schools. The CEF benefited indirectly since the existence of tax credit scholarships helped raise awareness of the critical need for tuition assistance. As a partial result the number of CEF donors increased by one-third which led to record charitable giving on behalf of our students.

While these state and federal tax-advantaged situations do not occur every year, the stewardship of a growing pool of benefactgors is constant. The CEF will continue to remain transparent in our fundraising and grant distribution, and continue to thank our benefactors on a regular basis. Thank you for your generous support through your prayers and financial support of the Catholic Education Foundation.

Rev. John Belmonte, SJ, Ph.D. Joseph L. Langenderfer, CFRE Superintendent of Schools Chief Executive Officer

Kazma Family Foundation The Catholic Education Foundation is proud to partner with the Kazma Family Foundation. The CEF gratefully recognizes Gerry and Margaret Kazma and foundation President Leigh-Anne Kazma for their wonderful example of Christian stewardship. The Kazma Family Foundation has provided life-changing opportunities to 577 Kazma Graduates since 2001. In addition, there are currently 111 Kazma Scholars attending all seven high schools in the Diocese of Joliet. The success stories of these graduates who might not have experienced a Catholic secondary education without the Kazma Family are numerous.

Joan C. LeTourneau Scholarship Fund

This past year a devout Catholic family gathered to celebrate the life of a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and prayed for the repose of her soul as she began her journey to God’s Heavenly Kingdom. Joan LeTourneau served as president of the Council of Catholic Women and was a faith filled and dedicated volunteer for Our Lady of Peace School and Parish in Darien, IL.

Upon her passing, her husband and children had a simple and beautiful thought: to create a scholarship fund in Joan’s memory and help fulfill her lifelong legacy of commitment to Catholic education. The scholarships would benefit qualified students at Our Lady of Peace School in perpetuity.

The family ultimately partnered with the Catholic Education Foundation to create an endowed scholarship that is distributing multiple student scholarships each year. Preference for award qualification will be awarded to students entering their 8th grade year who have displayed outstanding Christian attitudes and values such as charity, kindness, honesty and integrity. Indeed, these are just a few of the qualities that defined Joan’s service to Our Lord throughout her lifetime.

Two $1,000 scholarships have already been awarded to deserving students.

The Catholic Education Foundation welcomes cash contributions, bequests, and tax-wise planned gifts of all denominations. The Foundation, in return, offers numerous benefits to our donors:

Guarantee of Professional Management The Board of Directors guarantees sound professional management of all funds entrusted to our wise stewardship.

Frequent Reporting to Donors Monthly, quarterly and/or annual reporting is initiated as well as a year-end, independent audit to guarantee full disclosure of Foundation accounts and activities. Our most recent financial audit is available for viewing on the web (www.CEFJoliet.org) and is open to public review throughout the year in our offices during normal business hours. Pursuant to IRS regulations, the audit can also be mailed upon request.

Memorialize a Loved One Often donors wish to remember a loved one, family heritage or particular cause by naming a specific fund, which serves as an everlasting remembrance.

Gifts That Last Forever Various planned giving vehicles, sometimes using different methods, enable a gift to work forever by using only the income, while the principal remains uninhibited. You Can Tailor Your Gifts to Fit Your Desires! The Donor’s Favorite Charity Funds can be earmarked for a special beneficiary or be unrestricted to serve the general purposes of the Catholic Education Foundation. Similarly, many planned gift vehicles are open-ended, and the donor may add to the corpus at a later date.

Tax Advantage to Donor All contributions are accepted with the intention of providing optimal income tax deductions for the donor, and liquid assets are invested to produce maximum income for the charitable cause.
